Notes: Ovariectomized ewes were injected with charcoal-extracted bovine follicular fluid (n = 5) or with hypophysectomized ewe serum (n = 5) after which hypophyseal portal blood samples were taken to monitor the release of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Peripheral blood samples were also taken to monitor plasma luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations. Bovine follicular fluid treatment caused a 50% decrease in plasma FSH concentrations whereas hypophysectomized ewe serum did not significantly alter plasma FSH levels. The frequency and amplitude of luteinizing hormone and GnRH pulses was similar in both experimental groups. It is concluded that inhibin activity in bovine follicular fluid selectively suppresses the release of FSH by direct action on the pituitary gland, with no effect on GnRH secretion.

Notes: Conditions are given for the existence of exact solutions for the effective thermal and electroelastic moduli of polycrystals exhibiting fiber texture. The exact solutions are then developed through the consideration of a class of uniform fields in a polycrystal acted upon by various external thermal and electroelastic loadings. These exact results are verified by direct orientational averaging that shows the coincidence of the Voigt and Reuss bounds on the overall moduli. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) consisting of a thin Nafion sheet, platinum plated on both faces, undergoes large bending motion when an electric field is applied across its thickness. Conversely, a voltage is produced across its faces when it is suddenly bent. A micromechanical model is developed which accounts for the coupled ion transport, electric field, and elastic deformation to predict the response of the IPMC, qualitatively and quantitatively. First, the basic three-dimensional coupled field equations are presented, and then the results are applied to predict the response of a thin sheet of an IPMC. Central to the theory is the recognition that the interaction between an imbalanced charge density and the backbone polymer can be presented by an eigenstress field (Nemat-Nasser and Hori, Micromechanics, Overall Properties of Heterogeneous Materials, 2nd Ed., Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1999). The constitutive parameter connecting the eigenstress to the charge density is calculated directly using a simple microstructural model for Nafion. The results are applied to predict the response of samples of IPMC, and good correlation with experimental data is obtained. Experiments show that the voltage induced by a sudden imposition of a curvature, is two orders of magnitude less than that required to produce the same curvature. The theory accurately predicts this result. The theory also shows the relative effects of different counter ions, e.g., sodium versus lithium, on the response of the composite to an applied voltage or a curvature. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Laser-induced dark traces in doped LiNbO3 crystals are studied with the 1064 nm fundamental radiation and the 532 nm second harmonic radiation of the Nd:YAG laser operating in a pulse mode. The results show that the dark traces are induced only by the 532 nm radiation. The linear relationship between the transmission loss and the 532 nm power density indicates that dark traces are not due to two-photon absorption. The recovery rates of the absorption in LiNbO3 with different wavelength probe laser are measured and show that laser-induced dark traces accompany more than one defect appearing in LiNbO3, and disappear quicker at higher temperature. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The sign of photoinduced free carriers of LiNbO3:Mg and LiNbO3:Mg:Fe(0.05 wt. %) with various MgO contents has been determined by the holographic technique. The photorefraction of these crystals has also been studied. The enhanced resistance to photorefraction of LiNbO3:Mg((approximately-greater-than)5 mol % MgO) results from the occurrence of photoinduced hole free carriers, whose concentration is nearly equal to the electron concentration.

Notes: The paper shows a finite element method (FEM) model to calculate the temperature distribution of desulphurizing lance use in hot metal pretreatment by ANSYS program. The dynamic temperature distribution under non-linear thermal loads within lance in one or more duty cycles is obtained. The temperature distribution at important parts of the lance changes with time and is summedup according to the simulation. Some important instructional opinions offered by the conclusion benefit the improvement of temperature-based structure design and mend of desulphurizing lance. In addition, the conclusion provides research data for thermal stress analysis of lance

Notes: It is important to track a free flying insect to investigate its flight performance. Conventional video tracking systems are difficult to track a highly maneuverable insect, because the capture frequency of the camera is limited and it can hardly get the position of the insect in real time. We proposed a fast sensing method for insect tracking based on magnetic search coil sensors. It can simultaneously determine the orientation and position of the sensors. We constructed a system, calibrated the magnetic device. We developed a set of calculating methods and measured several positions and angles of coil sensors. The results show that it can rapidly provide the tracking feedback information to meet the requirement for insect tracking

Notes: We propose a new beating machine based on a dual cam and lever mechanism to operate flapping and torsion motions of a dragonfly wing. The beating machine was designed according to the time dependent variation in flapping angle and in torsion angle of a free flight dragonfly. Our experiment results show that the variations in flapping angle and in torsion angle of a wing on beating machine agree well with those of a real free flight dragonfly wing, confirming that our beating machine is available for studying the beating performance. We then use the beating machine to study the aerodynamic force and inertia affecting on the wing by comparing the flapping angle and torsion angle under the normal and vacuum conditions

Notes: A two-color heterodyne interferometer based on the movement of the optical diffraction grating is proposed. The method allows us to measure the phase of synthetic wavelength f s directly and with high accuracy to extend the range of unambiguity for interferometric measurements by using two close wavelengths. Our experiment results show that the uncertainty in displacement measurement caused by the uncertainty in f s is 0.20 µm, smaller than the half of a singlewavelength we used. The fringe order of a single wavelength can be determined without ambiguity. The uncertainty in displacement measurement can be improved further by using a single wavelength
