    Notes: Abstract We present brief précis of three related investigations. Fuller accounts can be found elsewhere. The investigations bear on the identification and prediction of coherent structures in turbulent shear flows. A second unifying thread is the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), or Karhunen-Loève expansion, which appears in all three investigations described. The first investigation demonstrates a close connection between the coherent structures obtained using linear stochastic estimation, and those obtained from the POD. Linear stochastic estimation is often used for the identification of coherent structures. The second investigation explores the use (in homogeneous directions) of wavelets instead of Fourier modes, in the construction of dynamical models; the particular problem considered here is the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. The POD eigenfunctions, of course, reduce to Fourier modes in homogeneous situations, and either can be shown to converge optimally fast; we address the question of how rapidly (by comparison) a wavelet representation converges, and how the wavelet-wavelet interactions can be handled to construct a simple model. The third investigation deals with the prediction of POD eigenfunctions in a turbulent shear flow. We show that energy-method stability theory, combined with an anisotropic eddy viscosity, and erosion of the mean velocity profile by the growing eigenfunctions, produces eigenfunctions very close to those of the POD, and the same eigenvalue spectrum at low wavenumbers.

    Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: Objectives of this study were to describe the technique of laparoscopic-assisted resection rectopexy and audit the clinical outcomes, including review of functional results. METHODS: Data were prospectively collected for duration of operation, time to passage of flatus and feces postoperatively, hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality. Follow-up was performed by an independent assessor using a standardized questionnaire. Patients were also assessed by clinical review or telephone interview. RESULTS: During a four-year period, 34 patients underwent laparoscopic repair for rectal prolapse, of which 30 patients underwent laparoscopic-assisted resection rectopexy. Median duration of the operations was 185 minutes, median time for passage of flatus was two days postoperatively, and median length of hospital stay was five days. Morbidity was 13 percent and mortality rate was 3 percent. Comparison between the first ten patients who underwent laparoscopic-assisted resection rectopexy and the last ten revealed a significant reduction in both median duration of operating time (224vs. 163 minutes;P〈0.005) and length of stay (6vs. 4 days;P〈0.015). Follow-up study conducted at a median time of 18 months revealed that most patients (92 percent) felt that the operation had improved their symptoms, that incontinence was improved in 14 of 20 patients with impaired continence (70 percent), and that constipation was improved in 64 percent. Symptoms of incomplete emptying and the need to strain at stool were both improved in 62 and 59 percent of patients, respectively. No full-thickness recurrences have occurred, but two patients have had mucosal prolapse detected (7 percent) and treated. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic-assisted resection rectopexy is feasible and safe, with acceptable recurrence rates and functional results compared with the open procedure in the surgical literature. There is rapid return of intestinal function associated with an early discharge from hospital.

    Notes: Abstract We derive an equation for the average length-scale in a turbulent flow from a simple physical model. This is a tensorial length-scale. We use as a model the evolution of a blob of turbulent kinetic energy under the influence of production, dissipation, and transport, as well as distortion by the mean motion. A single length-scale is defined which is biased toward the smallest of the scales in the various directions. Constants are estimated by consideration of homogeneous decay. Preliminary computations are carried out in a mixing layer and a two-dimensional jet, using the new length-scale equation and the equation for the turbulent kinetic energy. The results are compared with data and with the predictions of the classical k-epsilon equations; the new results are quite satisfactory. In particular, the plane jet/round jet anomaly is approximately resolved.

    Notes: Various wall-bounded flows with complex geometries and free shear flows have been studied with a newly developed realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model. The model development is based on the invariant theory in continuum mechanics. This theory enables us to formulate a general constitutive relation for the Reynolds stresses. Pope (J. Fluid Mech., 72, 331-340 (1975)) was the first to introduce this kind of constitutive relation to turbulence modelling. In our study, realizability is imposed on the truncated constitutive relation to determine the coefficients so that, unlike the standard k-∊ eddy viscosity model, the present model will not produce negative normal stresses in any situations of rapid distortion. The calculations based on the present model have shown encouraging success in modelling complex turbulent flows.
