    Notes: Abstract A 66-year-old Japanese woman whose cystic duct drained into an aberrant bile duct was found to have an intersegmental connection bridging the right anterior and posterior ducts. The patient had cholelithiasis but no history of hepatic trauma, lending support to congenital etiology for the intersegmental duct. In the presence of aberrant bile ducts, a meticulous search may reveal such biliary communications.

    Notes: Abstract  Lentinan, a β-1,6;1,3-glucan, is tumor-specific for transplantable mouse solid-type tumors and it also stimulates the production of acute phase proteins (APPs). The APP response to lentinan is of the delayed type (DT-APR) and differs from that to lipopolysaccharide, which is acute. We found that the responses were genetically controlled in mice and that low responsiveness is dominant (Maeda et al. 1991). Using 123 segregants of crosses between SWR/J (a high responder) and Mus spretus (a low responder), we analyzed the linkage between DT-APR responsiveness and the DNA polymerase chain reaction-simple sequence length polymorphism (PCR-SSLP) phenotype using 80 chromosome-specific microsatellite markers. We identified two loci (ltn1.1 and ltn1.2) responsible for DT-APR. ltn1.1 is closely linked to D3Mit11 on chromosome 3 and ltn1.2 to D11Nds9 on chromosome 11 (P 〈0.001). The linkage analysis also suggested that ltn1.2 is the major determinant for DT-APR. Correlation between lentinan-specific IL-6 mRNA expression (the late expression) controlled recessively and DT-APR induction suggests that the ltn1 loci control some process(es) of IL-6 expression in the regulation step before NF-IL6.

    Notes: Abstract  Lentinan, β-1,6;1,3-glucan, showing an antitumor effect against mouse solid type tumors, can induce marked vascular dilation and hemorrhage (VDH) in very localized areas such as the ears, feet, and tails of mice in the early stages after its administration (Maeda et al. 1984). VDH has been found to be one of the T-cell-mediated responses triggered by lentinan. We reported previously that the responsiveness of mice to lentinan with respect to VDH induction is controlled by a dominant gene(s), Ltn2 (formerly), and that no sex difference was observed (Maeda et al. 1991). To determine the chromosomal location of the Ltn2 gene(s), we typed genomic DNAs of 193 N2 segregants of crosses between a high responder MA/MyJ and a low responder AKR/J by the polymerase chain reaction-simple sequence length polymorphism technique using 83 chromosome-specific microsatellite markers. We identified one major gene (Ltnr3) and three minor genes (Ltnr4, Ltnr5, and Ltnr6) responsible for the VDH induction. Ltnr3 was closely linked to D6Mit135 on chromosome 6 (P 〈0.00000) and Ltnr4, Ltnr5, and Ltnr6 to D9Mit161 on chromosome 9 (P 〈0.00032), D15Mit147 on chromosome 15 (P 〈0.00014) and D16Mit4 on chromosome 16 (P 〈0.00014), respectively.

    Notes: Abstract We proposed that the trajectory followed by human subject arms tended to minimize the time integral of the square of the rate of change of torque (Uno et al. 1987). This minimum torque-change model predicted and reproduced human multi-joint movement data quite well (Uno et al. 1989). Here, we propose a neural network model for trajectory formation based on the minimum torque-change criterion. Basic ideas of information representation and algorithm are(i) spatial representation of time,(ii) learning of forward dynamics and kinetics model and(iii) relaxation computation based on the acquired model. The model can resolve ill-posed inverse kinematics and inverse dynamics problems for redundant controlled object as well as ill-posed trajectory formation problems. By computer simulation, we show that the model can produce a multi-joint arm trajectory while avoiding obstacles or passing through viapoints.

    Notes: Abstract In order to control visually-guided voluntary movements, the central nervous system (CNS) must solve the following three computational problems at different levels: (1) determination of a desired trajectory in the visual coordinates, (2) transformation of the coordinates of the desired trajectory to the body coordinates and (3) generation of motor command. In this paper, the second and the third problems are treated at computational, representational and hardware levels of Marr. We first study the problems at the computational level, and then propose an iterative learning scheme as a possible algorithm. This is a trial and error type learning such as repetitive training of golf swing. The amount of motor command needed to coordinate activities of many muscles is not determined at once, but in a step-wise, trial and error fashion in the course of a set of repetitions. Actually, the motor command in the (n+1)-th iteration is a sum of the motor command in then-th iteration plus two modification terms which are, respectively, proportional to acceleration and speed errors between the desired trajectory and the realized trajectory in then-th iteration. We mathematically formulate this iterative learning control as a Newton-like method in functional spaces and prove its convergence under appropriate mathematical conditions with use of dynamical system theory and functional analysis. Computer simulations of this iterative learning control of a robotic manipulator in the body or visual coordinates are shown. Finally, we propose that areas 2, 5, and 7 of the sensory association cortex are possible sites of this learning control. Further we propose neural network model which acquires transformation matrices from acceleration or velocity to motor command, which are used in these schemes.

    Notes: Abstract. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films were grown by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) on (111) Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) substrates. The second harmonic of YAG laser (532 nm) with a high laser fluence was employed to produce YIG droplets efficiently. It was found that YIG films prepared at RT substrates have a large number of solidified droplets of various sizes. Highly oriented YIG crystals were grown on the (111) GGG substrate heated at 860 °C by PLA using a large number of molten droplets, suggesting an LPE-like growth. This YIG film shows a small ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth of 7.5 Oe. This value is quite small for films prepared by vapor-phase epitaxy techniques.
