    Notes: Abstract Paper presents the experimental confirmation of a vibration and stability model of a thermally stressed rotating disk. Attention is directed to the rotating-disk convective-heat-transfer problem. Measured temperature distributions are used in the computation of the theoretical characteristic frequency spectrum which is then verified by the experimental frequency spectrum. The theoretical characteristic spectrum is shown to be effective in predicting the likelihood of a critical speed instability of the thermally stressed rotating disk. Optimal control of disk operation using this model is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract A design analysis of a class of six degree of freedom strain-gage dynamometers which are virtually uncoupled in each force and moment component is presented. The method of design is detailed and an optimal design algorithm is implemented. The dynamometer is made of six or more T-sections with thin webs and flanges called shear panel elements (SPE). Complete stress and buckling analyses are carried out for the SPE, and experiments confirm the predictions of the analyses. The optimal design method is illustrated with several case studies. A dynamometer has been built and used in laboratory and field experiments.

    Notes: Abstract A modal testing method permitting identification of the natural frequencies, the number of nodal diameters and wave motions in a rotating disk is presented in this paper. This method is applicable at arbitrary rotation speed without requiring a priori information about the vibration modes of the stationary disk. The influence of disk rotation speed on the prediction of mode shapes with this method is shown, and experimental predictions of modal parameters are presented for both axisymmetric and asymmetric disks.

    Notes: This paper presents a new discrete (point-matching) least squares method for solving general, non-linear boundary value problems. The technique uses a mixed formulation and minimizes the sum of squared residuals by Powell's (1965) algorithm. The present method is compared with finite difference and weighted residual finite element methods in the examples and discussion. It shows considerable promise as a general differential equation solver for both large and small computer systems.

    Notes: A general-purpose technique has been developed for solving non-linear partial differential equations. A set of approximating functions with undetermined parameters is used to evaluate the differential equation and boundary conditions at discrete points, forming a set of residuals to be minimized. The parameters which minimize the sum of squared residuals are determined by a non-linear least-squares minimization technique. Initial value problems are solved by integrating the equations with respect to time at the fitting points by a predictor-corrector algorithm. The resulting formulation is independent of the form of the problem and the approximating functions, so that a broad class of problems may be solved with a single computer program. The technique is applied to several boundary and initial value problems in one and two spatial dimensions.     Notes: A simple, rapidly convergent procedure is described for solving a third-order symmetric eigenvalue problem Au = λ Bu typically arising in vibration analysis. The eigenvalue problem is represented in terms of its variational dual, the Rayleigh quotient, and the eigenosolution is obtained through a topographical search for points of quotient stationarity. The associated computer routine is compact and can easily be incorporated within the calling program. Degenerate eigensolutions cause no difficulty. An example FORTRAN routine is given.

    Notes: Composite boundary elements are formed for plate-bending problems by attaching a circular sector to a triangle. Elements utilizing cubic and quintic interpolation are developed for convex and concave boundaries.Smaller error and less numerical effort result when triangular elements are replaced by the composite boundary elements on clamped and most simply supported convex, boundaries. For domains with concave boundaries, greater accuracy is obtained when the quintic composite boundary element replaces the triangular element in fine mesh configurations.
