Notizen: Haemoglobins of 0-group cod from 30 to 150 mm length were analysed by agar gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing to identify the lower size limit for determination of the haemoglobin polymorphisms in cod; both the main system which has been known for more than 30 years and the recently described subgroups. The juvenile fish studied had higher concentration of the HbII-component (split into three bands at these fish sizes) compared to older fish. The main haemoglobin types could be distinguished clearly and reliably at a fish size of about 35 mm and above. The subgroups of the HbI-components, however, could not be identified reliably until the cod were about 80 mm.

Notizen: During the last decade, genetic studies have been carried out on samples of Atlantic herring, CIupea harengus L., from the Baltic, North Sea, British Isles, Norwegian sea-waters and in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean. Based on direct comparisons of samples drawn from several areas, the available information on allozyme variation was compiled into a comparable data set and analysed for population structure and genetic distance. The results are discussed in relation to the present stock model for herring.

Notizen: Freshwater resident and anadromous life history forms of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., sampled from each of three watercourses were analysed for biochemical genetic variation. Ten enzyme systems encoded by a putative 30 loci were analysed. Significant genetic differences were found between the two life history forms in all three watercourses. Further, significant genetic differences were also found between the three anadromous populations analysed, although two of them are separated by a distance along the shore line by less than 2 km. The findings focus on the need to reconsider the conservation and management practice of wild and hatchery-reared stocks.

Notizen: Releases of farmed fish, whether accidental from commercial aquaculture facilities or intentional as part of stock enhancement/ranching activities, are considered to pose a risk to native gene pools. Stock enhancement studies of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, based on artificially produced juveniles, were initiated in 1984 in western Norway, and genetic aspects were incorporated. In order to investigate potential interbreeding between released and wild cod, a genetically marked cod strain was developed, being homozygotic for a rare allele (GPI-1*30) expressed in white muscle tissue. In the period from 1990 to 1994, juveniles from the genetic marked strain were released in large quantities in three locations (Masfjord, Øygarden, Heimarkspollen), giving a significant increase of the marker allele in the local wild cod populations. Recently, studies have been conducted in the same areas to estimate the extent of interbreeding between the wild and released cod. The results, however, revealed no permanent increase of the frequency of the marker allele and/or GPI-1*30 heterozygotes as would be expected from interbreeding. The recent data are compared with comprehensive genetic data of the cod populations in the areas before the actual releases, covering the full period from 1994 to 2003. The present results are also discussed in relation to fishing pressure on coastal cod, migration information and reproductive success of released, genetically marked cod.

Notizen: Significant differences were found at the synaptophysin (Syp I) locus between two groups of Icelandic cod Gadus morhua; Loftstaõahraun (spawning ground), Reykjanesgrunn and Eyrabakkabugur (feeding grounds) on the one hand and Kantur (spawning ground) and Austfjarõadjúp (feeding ground) on the other. There was also a considerable genetic heterogeneity within the former group. The results indicate that the cod in south and south-east Icelandic waters do not belong to one panmictic population.

Notizen: To study the population structure of tusk Brosme brosme in the North Atlantic, samples from six fishing grounds were collected: St Kilda; Storegga; Faroe Islands; Rockall bank; Davis Strait and East Greenland. In addition two samples from the Norwegian coast; Kragerø and Øygarden, were included. Nine enzymes and haemoglobin were analysed by starch gel and agar gel electrophoresis. In addition isoelectric focusing (IEF) was carried out. At least 22 loci were represented. Polymorphisms were shown in eight loci and average heterozygosity was found to be about 0.05. Highest heterozygosity was found in haemoglobin analysed by Smithies buffer pH 8.6. Malate dehydrogenase (MDH-2) analysed in IEF (pH 3.5-9.5), and haemoglobin were found as valuable tools for studies of stock structure in tusk. In the Greenland samples only one of the MDH-2 heterozygotes was found, while in the East Atlantic both the observed heterozygotes were more frequent. The frequencies of the the Hb*b allele were about 0.40 and 0.70 in the samples from east and west Atlantic respectively.

Notizen: Groups of pre-smolt Atlantic salmon were reared under three experimental photoperiods. Growth rate was significantly enhanced under 24 h of light: 0 h of darkness per diem (24 L: 0 D) compared with 16 L: 8 D and 8 L: 16 D from early January to early May. From the beginning of May until the termination of the experiment on 27 May, growth rate was highest under 8 L: 16 D.All groups developed bimodal length-frequency distributions during the experiment. The proportion of the population in each of the two growth modes was significantly affected by photoperiod treatment. The level of plasma cortisol increased significantly from February to May. There were no differences in levels of plasma cortisol among photoperiod treatments.Judged by development in plasma cortisol, changes in condition factor and external appearance, the parr-smolt transformation was not completed under any of the experimental photoperiods.

Notizen: Studies on genetic changes in farmed fish populations are reviewed, and the potential interactions between wild and farm escapee, and between wild and stocked, fish populations are discussed. Examples of the application of genetic markers in studies concerning survival and reproduction of stocked fish, and genetic and ecological interactions between stocks, are given for brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, brown trout, Salmo trutta, rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, cod, Gadus morhua, Guadalupe bass, Micropterus treculi, walleye, Stizostedion vitreum vitreum and chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta. The various studies produced different results. Evidence for successful reproduction and genetic interactions between released and wild stocks have been found in a few cases. Stocked genetic material sometimes had a lower reproductive success than wild material. In one case the transplanted genetic material failed to acclimatize, and was apparently lost from the genepool in two generations. Investigations on the genetic and ecological interactions between wild and farmed populations are of great importance to the preservation of wild populations and their genetic resources.

Notizen: Biochemical genetic polymorphism in cod from several fjords in Troms, northern Norway was analysed. Gene frequencies at several polymorphic loci (Hb, Pgi, Ldh, Pgm, Gpd and Idh) are given. Significant variation was found both within and between fjords, and even between samples from the same locality sampled in different years, indicating a mosaic structure of the cod population in the area studied. The results of the haemoglobin variation are compared to similar results obtained more than 20 years ago in the same and adjacent areas. The biochemical genetic variation is discussed in relation to stability of gene frequencies, isolation mechanisms and migration patterns.
