Notes: Abstract . A coupled-channel formulation for the description of nucleon-deuteron scattering is developed. Three-nucleon channels are coupled to those in which one nucleon is transformed to a single -isobar. The -isobar is considered as a stable baryon with spin and isospin . The virtual excitation of the -isobar yields an effective three-nucleon force. The three-particle scattering equations are solved by a separable expansion of the two-baryon transition matrix. The validity of the separable expansion is tested in two- and three-nucleon systems. The given separable expansion is shown to be sufficiently accurate for nucleon-deuteron scattering below the inelastic threshold of pion production.

Notes: Abstract. The description of neutron-deuteron elastic scattering is based on a coupled-channel two-baryon interaction that allows for virtual excitation of a nucleon to a -isobar. This gives rise to an effective three-nucleon force in three-nucleon systems. The three-particle scattering equations are solved by employing a separable expansion of the two-baryon transition matrix. The Coulomb interaction is not included. Spin-averaged and spin-dependent observables of elastic neutron-deuteron scattering are calculated and compared with experimental data. The calculated results refer to neutron lab energies between 0 and 70 MeV. Some long-standing discrepancies in low-energy spin observables between theoretical predictions and experimental data cannot be removed by the considered -isobar effects.

Notes: Abstract A simple method for increasing fringe visibility of an interference pattern in a Mach-Zehnder type fibre interferometer is presented. In order to obtain high visibility, two elliptically polarized waves emitted from fibres with birefringence are transformed into two linearly polarized waves of equal amplitude and with parallel planes of polarization by using ordinary optical components. Instability of fringe patterns due to temperature fluctuation of the air surrounding the fibres is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract By using a Gaussian field approximation to the fundamental mode in a single-mode fibre, a very simple formula is derived for the splice loss in the two fibres when transverse, longitudinal and angular misalignments exist simultaneously. It is shown that the effects of the three misalignments on the splice loss are more significant for step-index fibres than for parabolic-index fibres, and also that matching oil in the gap between the fibres is effective for the end separation, but produces a reverse effect for the tilt. Calculated coupling efficiency between step-index fibres is compared with the experimental data reported so far, and good agreement between them is observed.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an accurate method for observing fringe movement in a Mach-Zehnder type fibre interferometer. We place a photodetector in each of two interference patterns formed by a half-mirror and waves emitted from single-mode fibres. By applying the output voltages of the detectors to X- and Y-terminals of an oscilloscope, we can observe the fringe movement as a rotation of a bright spot along a Lissajous figure.
