Notes: Abstract Two kinds of additive-free silicon nitride ceramics were brazed with aluminium; one was with as-ground faying surfaces and the other was with faying surfaces heat-treated at 1073K for 1.8 ksec in air. The heat-treatment of the silicon nitride ceramics formed a silicon oxynitride layer on the faying surfaces and increased the brazing strength of the joints. A silica-alumina non-crystalline layer and a β′-sialon layer were formed successively from the aluminium side at the interface of the joints. The heat-treatment which made the former layer thicker is a necessary process in making reliable, strong brazed joints.

Notes: Abstract Joined interfaces of HIPed additive-free silicon nitride ceramics/aluminium braze bonded at a low temperature of 1073 K for 18 ks or at a high temperature of 1473 K for 1.8 ks in vacuum of 1.3 mPa and of β silicon nitride powders/aluminium powders bonded at the low temperature for 1.8 ks or 18 ks in the same vacuum are identified by analytical transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction method. Mullite, some small crystals and β′-sialon are detected at the interface of the ceramics/aluminium braze bonded at the low temperature and 15R AIN-polytype sialon, β′-sialon, aluminium nitride, mullite and silica-alumina noncrystalline are detected at that bonded at the high temperature. At the interface of the two kinds of powders, aluminium nitride and silicon are also detected besides β′-sialon and silica-alumina noncrystalline even though the bonding was conducted at the low temperature. The interfacial reactions of the joints are influenced not only by bonding temperature but also by the oxide formed at the interface before bonded.

Notes: Abstract Five criteria for evaluating the whisker microstructure have been suggested, which include (1) proportion of “perfect” single crystals, (2) morphology and growth direction, (3) length, diameter and ratio ofL/D, (4) the bulk and surface chemistries, (5) defects and their distribution. Three sets of commercially available SiC whiskers made in two countries and the TiN whiskers were characterized in terms of the above criteria.

Notes: Abstract Aluminium was coated on silicon nitride ceramics by a low-pressure plasma spraying method, in order to form a tight bond between aluminium and the ceramics. Aluminium nitride formed as a interfacial reaction product between the aluminium coating layer and the ceramics. Two pieces of the aluminium-coated Si3N4 ceramics were then joined using the aluminium coating layers as filler metal in a vacuum of 1.3×10−3 Pa at 973 K. The average bending strength and Weibull modulus of the joint are 340 MPa and 6.3 respectively, considerably higher than the 230 MPa and 0.9 of a Si3N4 ceramics joint brazed with an aluminum plate under the same condition.

Notes: Abstract The interfacial reaction at the whisker–matrix interface in a K2O·6TiO2/6061Al composite was investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Magnesium segregation and titanium enrichment at the whisker–aluminium interface was revealed by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. It was shown that TiO and MgTi2O4 layers and MgAl2O4 particles were formed at the whisker–aluminium interfaces in the composite during the manufacturing of the composite. The thickening of the reaction layer after T6 treatment may result in the decrease of the bending strength of the composite. Specific orientation relationships between MgTi2O4 and TiO, and also between TiO and K2O·6TiO2 whiskers were also found.

Notes: Abstract High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of stacking faults on (0 0 1) and (1 0 1) planes in a β-Si3N4 whisker were obtained and compared to image simulations. This procedure showed that the atomic structure of the four atomic planes around the (0 0 1) stacking fault plane in the β-phase is very similar to that of the unit cell of α-Si3N4 crystal. The stacking fault was observed to climb under electron irradiation in the microscope.
