    Notes: Summary Purkinje cells in zones a and b of the vermis and zone c in the intermediate cortex of the anterior lobe were intracellularly injected with horseradish peroxidase and the distribution patterns of the varicosities present on their axonal collaterals were quantified and compared at the light microscopic level. The data derived from this study reveal that each individual axonal arbor had a unique pattern of distribution. However, certain principles of distribution could be applied to the collaterals regardless of the cortical location of the parent cell, including the following: 1) the total number of varicosities derived from the axonal collaterals of individual Purkinje cells is relatively uniform; 2) the collateral plexi have a greater extent in the sagittal plane as compared to the transverse plane; 3) the majority of varicosities remain within 200–300 μm of the parent cell in both the sagittal and transverse planes; 4) there is a heterogenous distribution of varicosities within the area traversed by the axonal branches; and 5) the majority of varicosities are located within the Purkinje cell layer. Although there were similarities in the pattern of distribution for collaterals, there were also variations which distinguished the plexi in the three zones. The collaterals of zone a cells tended to be the most confined in both the sagittal and transverse planes. In contrast, several cells in zone b and c had branches that extended for relatively long distances in the sagittal plane. In zone b the collaterals have an asymmetric distribution around the cell of origin in the transverse plane. In zones a and c there is a tendency for a more symmetric pattern of distribution in this plane. The similarities in the number and laminar distribution of varicosities, as well as the predominantly sagittal orientation of the collaterals in all zones of the cerebellar cortex suggest that the collaterals subserve a common function throughout the cerebellar cortex. However, variations indicate that there may be subtle differences in the way recurrent collaterals process information in the cerebellar cortex that may be related to the functional heterogeneity or the location of the targets of the collaterals in the three zones analyzed.

    Notes: Abstract Model atmospheres are computed for the three known magnetic DN white dwarfs. Using these, a calculation of line and circular polarization profile is performed for the first four Balmer lines assuming centred or decentred dipolar field geometries inclined, in general, to the line of sight. It is found that the results give good overall agreement with the observations of these three stars.

    Notes: Abstract The Edinburgh-Cape Blue Object Survey is a major survey to discover blue stellar objects brighter than B ∼ 18 in the southern sky. It is covering an area of sky of 10,000 square degrees with |b| 〉 30° andδ 〈 0°. The blue stellar objects are selected by automatic techniques from U and B pairs of UK Schmidt Telescope plates scanned with the COSMOS measuring machine. Follow-up photometry and spectroscopy are being obtained with the SAAO telescopes to classify objects brighter than B = 16.5. This paper describes the survey, the techniques used to extract the blue stellar objects, the photometric accuracy, the spectroscopic classification, and the completeness of the survey.

    Notes: Abstract We have established that the cataclysmic variable TU Crateris is an SU UMa star. Superhumps were observed after 3 days of the 1998 March-April supermaximum, repeating with a mean period of Ps = 0d.08535(5). Timings of superhump maxima revealed a period decrease of P = 7.2 × 10-5. Based on an empirical relationship, we estimated an orbital period of 0d.0810(25), just in the lower limit of the reported quiescence photometric period. Hα emission lines during quiescence vary with the orbital period with radial velocity half amplitude of 70 ± 19 km s-1, evidencing a hotspot located in front of the standard position.

    Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: The morphologic features of fulminant colitis may be nonspecific, making differentiation between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease difficult, even after colectomy. The aims of this study were 1) to identify histologic features that accurately differentiated ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and indeterminate colitis in fulminant colectomy specimens; 2) to determine how frequently subsequent clinical course altered the pathologic diagnosis; and 3) to evaluate the natural history of histologically diagnosed indeterminate colitis. METHODS: Ninety-five fulminant colectomy specimens were evaluated, of which 85 had an original diagnosis of fulminant inflammatory bowel disease. Complete pathologic material and comprehensive clinical follow-up information was available on 67 cases of inflammatory bowel disease. These were re-evaluated in a blinded fashion, and histopathologic features were compared with the original diagnosis and reviewed in the light of subsequent clinical behavior to reach a final diagnosis. RESULTS: Evaluation of macroscopic features was not helpful in differentiating ulcerative colitis from Crohn's disease. Microscopic examination correctly diagnosed ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease in only 58 of 67 (87 percent) cases. A further three cases (4 percent) were definitively classified after correlation with clinical data, leaving a residual six cases that were diagnosed as indeterminate colitis. Granulomas and lymphoid aggregates were the two most specific indicators of Crohn's disease. CONCLUSIONS: Histopathologic evaluation alone has limitations in the accurate classification of fulminant inflammatory bowel disease. Histologically diagnosed indeterminate colitis is a heterogeneous group that may include some patients who subsequently prove to have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

    Notes: Abstract In order to study the effect of clofazimine, a powerful antimycobacterial and antiinflammatory agent, 49 patients with active Crohn's disease were randomized to either corticosteroids plus clofazimine 100 mg daily (N=25) or to steroids and matching placebo (N=24). A total of 28 patients (58%) went into disease remission (clofazimine 16, placebo 12;P=NS) with a fall in disease activity score from 10.5±4.4 to 3.3±3.5. Patients were treated for a further eight months with clofazimine or placebo and 18 of 28 maintained their remission and completed the study (clofazimine 12, placebo 6;P=NS). Side effects were minor and consisted of skin rash and increased pigmentation. Clofazimine as a solitary antimycobacterial agent appears ineffective in inducing remission in Crohn's disease but may have a role in either disease maintenance or combination chemotherapy.

    Notes: Abstract The similarity in properties of GK Per and BV Cen suggests that the latter may be a classical nova remnant rather than a dwarf nova. Our Hα and V CCD photometry show no sign of a nova shell but disclose the presence of a close and probably physical companion. BV(RI) c CCD photometry of the companion, assumed to be a dwarf, givesM v =3.1±0.3 for BV Cen at quiescence. Even though half of the light in BV Cen comes from the secondary this is much brighter than expected for a dwarf nova and supports the conclusion that BV Cen was an unrecorded nova.
