Notes: Surface fatigue crack studies were carried out and statistically analysed from rotating bend fatigue tests in the high cycle region for three metals, copper, stainless steel and mild steel with four ferrite grain sizes. Quantitative observations of the initiation and growth behavior, including coalescence of closely spaced cracks, are discussed and a limiting condition for coalescence is proposed. Statistical properties of initiation, propagation and propagation rate of surface cracks are examined and the effect of different metals and grain sizes is discussed.

Notes: In order to investigate the fatigue properties of high-strength steels in the very long-life regime up to over 109 cycles, cantilever-type rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out for two kinds of high-strength steels, SUJ2 and SNCM439, which were machined by grinding and finished by electropolishing after grinding. And also, the residual stress on the specimen surface of the ground specimen was examined by X-ray diffractometer in order to investigate effects of the residual stress on the fatigue properties. From the investigations, the S–N curves clearly have a tendency to decrease again in the longer-life range over 107 cycles for both types of specimen and for both steels. From observations of fracture surfaces, it was found that fatigue crack origins could be grouped into two types: (i) ‘surface crack origin type’ in the shorter-life regime and (ii) ‘internal crack origin type’ in the longer-life regime.

Notes: Observations of fatigue crack growth behaviour were made during rotating-bend testing of hard-shot peened Type 316L steel. From the results of these observations, the crack that developed in the axial direction was observed and the mechanism of the fatigue crack properties was clarified as follows: (1) Small circumferential surface fatigue cracks were detected at 60% of the fatigue lifetime. These cracks propagated very slowly in both the circumferential and radial directions. (2) When a radial crack reached a depth of between 150 and 350 μm, axial fatigue cracks were formed. (3) In the next stage, either the radial or the axial fatigue cracks continued propagating, or an inwards growing radial crack formed from the axial crack. (4) In the final stage, the circumferential surface crack began to grow rapidly and resulted in fracture. (5) The fracture type of hard-shot peened Type 316L is a particular type of surface fracture.
