Notes: Summary Newborn hamsters were inoculated with 0.02 ml of bovine adenovirus type 3 (BAV 3) having a titer of 104.5TCID50/0.1 ml. Of 82 hamsters observed over 40 days after viral inoculation, 15 developed choroid plexus papilloma after a latency period of 41–228 days and six developed giant cell glioblastoma after a latency period of 66–214 days. Multiple foci of abnormal cell grwoth were also observed in the meninges and choroid plexus. Choroid plexus papilloma developed in the ventricles occupying the ventricular cavity and histologically showed a radiating arrangement of spindle-shaped cells forming perivascular pseudorosettes. Giant cell glioblastoma developed in the cerebral cortex including the meninges. The tumors were reddish in color and soft in consistency. Histologically, the tumor cells were short-spindle, ovar or, pleomorphic cells with a large vesicular nucleus, and were characterized by the appearance of monster cells and hypervascularity. The short spindle-shaped cells were positive for glial fibrillary acid protein.

Notes: Summary We examined the spinal ganglia and peripheral nerves from a patient with Tay-Sachs disease, comparing the other nervous tissues morphologically and lipid-biochemically. The spinal ganglia and peripheral nerves showed numerous membranous cytoplasmic inclusion bodies (MCBs), which are characteristic of GM2-ganglioside storage in the neuronal cell bodies of the patient brains. In spinal ganglia, all neurons and satellite cells around the neurons contained membrane-bound lipid materials. In peripheral nerves, Schwann cells and myelinated axons except for enlarged axons were devoid of MCBs. Major ganglioside stored in both spinal ganglia and peripheral nerve was also GM2-ganglioside. The contents of ganglioside in the spinal ganglia and peripheral nerves were 50 and 10 times more than those from normal tissues, respectively. The spinal cord contained a slightly higher amount of gangliosides than the normal control. The cerebral white matter fotally demyelinated in this patient accumulated a much higher amount of gangliosides than the cerebral gray matter. The retinal tissue showed GM2-ganglioside as the major one also.

Notes: Summary The effects of orally administered glandular kallikrein on urinary kallikrein, aldosterone and prostaglandin E (PGE) excretion, plasma renin activity (PRA), immunoreactive 6-keto PGF1α and thromboxane B2 concentrations and platelet aggregation were studied in 12 patients with essential hypertension (EH). After a 2-week control period, each patient was given orally 450 KU/day of hog glandular kallikrein for 8 weeks. Urinary kallikrein, aldosterone and PGE excretion, and plasma 6-keto PGF1α and thromboxane B2 concentrations were measured by radio-immunoassay. Platelet aggregation was measured by the addition of ADP, collagen or ristocetin with an aggregometer. Urinary kallikrein excretion and plasma 6-keto PGF1α concentration were significantly decreased in patients with EH. There were no significant differences in PRA, urinary aldosterone excretion and plasma thromboxane B2 concentrations between control subjects and patients with EH. There was a significant decrease in blood pressure in patients with EH coinciding with significant increases of urinary kallikrein and PGE excretion and plasma immunoreactive 6-keto PGF1α concentration after administration of glandular kallikrein. There was also a significant inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by collagen in these patients. Thus, a suppression of the kallikrein-kinin-prostaglandin system in patients with EH was found, and a decrease in blood pressure with an increment of urinary kallikrein, PGE excretion, plasma immunoreactive 6-keto PGF1α and inhibition of platelet aggregation in vivo by the administration of glandular kallikrein.

Notes: Abstract. Intracellular dialysis with the solution containing the G protein activator, AlF complex, induced an inward nonselective cation current (I NS) at −55 mV in chromaffin cells. Amplitudes of I NS induced by dialysis with ATP-free AlF solutions progressively diminished as cells were pretreated with cyanide, a mitochondrial inhibitor. After a 10-min pretreatment, generation of I NS by the AlF complex depended on exogenous ATP delivered from pipette solution. The relationship between amplitudes of I NS and concentrations of MgATP was well expressed by a rectangular hyperbola with an EC50 of 0.265 mm. This result suggests that the cyanide treatment almost depleted ATP near the plasma membrane. On the other hand, a similar cyanide treatment of adrenal medullary preparations did not induce a marked decrease in cellular ATP content. GTP, ITP, or UTP could not substitute for ATP in generation of I NS by the AlF complex. Similarly, the substitution of ATP with non- or poorly hydrolyzable ATP analogues did not aid in generating I NS. Bath application of the kinase inhibitor, H-7 (100 μm), suppressed AlF-induced I NS in a manner depending on intracellular Mg2+. We conclude that ATP is a prerequisite for generation of I NS as a phosphoryl donor and that mitochondria is the main source of ATP.

Notes: Summary The fine structural localization of ChAc activity was studied in the rat neostriatum by a ultracytochemical method. The reaction products of ChAc activity were seen in the cisternal structures and plasma membrane of some medium-sized neurons. Some boutons with ChAc-positive vesicles were observed to make an axo-dendritic or axo-somatic symmetrical synapse.

Notes: Since titanium alloys are the most promising structural materials for the high velocityvehicles, the impact tensile strength of the materials is presently investigated. Three kinds ofaging treatments on the beta-titanium alloy were performed, and the tensile deformation behaviorswere identified in the wide range of the temperature and the strain rate. The stress-strain relationsof the titanium alloy significantly depend on the temperature and the strain rate investigated.Thermally activated process concept was applied to explain the experimental results, and thestress-strain relations at high strain rates were well understood with taking account of adiabaticheating effect. It has been found that the stress-strain curves depend on the microstructures, whilethe temperature and the strain rate effects are almost independent of the different aging treatments

Notes: Abstract  Two branches of a field-grown Chamaecy-paris obtusa tree were enclosed in chambers of an open gas exchange system for continuous CO2 exchange measurements. One branch was subjected to ambient air (CO2, 370 µmol mol–1) and the other was subjected to CO2-enriched air (800 µmol mol–1). The CO2 exchange rate of the branches, air temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density were recorded every 4 min by a computer during the two experimental periods of July 1994 to June 1995 (experiment 1) and April 1996 to August 1997 (experiment 2). The response of CO2 gas exchange rate to light changed with the seasonal temperature. The highest saturated rate of net photosynthesis on a leaf area basis was observed in May and October in both CO2 treatments when the mean daytime temperature was about 18–19°C. This temperature was almost equal to the yearly mean daytime temperature. Above and below this temperature, the saturated net photosynthesis rate decreased. The net photosynthesis rate was usually higher in the elevated CO2 treatment. The ratio of monthly net photosynthesis rate in elevated CO2 to that in ambient CO2 was linearly related to the monthly mean daytime temperature. This ratio increased by 3.3% for each 1°C increase in the monthly mean daytime temperature; the highest ratio of 1.8 occurred in August. When the ratio was 1.0, the temperature was about 5–6°C, which was close to the mean daytime temperature of the coldest month. Elevated CO2 increased per unit area net photosynthesis by 38.5% and 43.7% in experiments 1 and 2, respectively.

Notes: Blood flow stagnation is said to be an important factor for the incidence of dark eye circles, but there are few reports, which have studied dark eye circles and the relationship to blood flow. We have examined dark eye circles dermatologically using a non-invasive method and made clear the factor related to it. We have also studied the effect of newly developed cosmetics on improvement of dark eye circles. Melanin and haemoglobin content, haemoglobin oxygen saturation and blood flow rate were measured to compare dark eye circles with a normal control. An increased amount of haemoglobin and decreased haemoglobin oxygen saturation were observed at the site of dark eye circles. We also observed that the blood flow rate was slow at dark eye circles in comparison with cheek. From these results, blood flow stagnation seems to be one of the factors that could induce dark eye circles. In addition, the increase of melanin at dark eye circles was also observed in older subjects. It was considered that not only congestion but also an increase of melanin content in the skin could induce dark eye circles. On the basis of these results, we developed anti-dark eye circle cosmetics that can improve blood circulation, reduce melanin content and maintain high moisture retention in the skin. After 3 weeks’ usage of this product, it was confirmed that dark eye circles were improved, judging from the result of non-invasive instrumental measurements.
