    Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody, F11C, was raised against rat colon cancer cells. Its immunoreactivity on normal human and rat gut as well as human and rat colonic tumours was studied by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. In both normal rat and human gastrointestinal tract, F11C stained surface epithelial cells from the fundus to distal colon, mainly as supranuclear vesicles. These vesicles appeared to be part of the Golgi apparatus on electron microscopy with immunogold labelling. Twenty primary rat colon tumours and 28 of 43 human colon tumours were also stained, with a heterogeneous pattern but much more strongly than the normal colonic mucosa. Biochemical purification suggested that in rat tumours F11C epitope was carried by a high molecular weight glycoprotein. Absorption experiments with synthetic oligosaccharides showed that F11C monoclonal antibody reacted with blood group A-related oligosaccharides. Nevertheless, F11C reactivity on human tissues was not related to the individual ABO or Lewis phenotype.

    Notes: Abstract. During human development, type-1-precursor, sialyl-Lea, and Lex antigens were present in the periderm of skin and eye at week 6. The Lex antigen disappeared from cornea at 10 weeks and then from skin at 20 weeks. H-type-1, Lea, Leb, sialyl-Lea, H-type-2, sialyl-Lex, and Ley were found in cornea, conjunctiva, and periderm between 10 and 20 weeks. They disappear from the skin (at week 20) and progressively reappear in skin derivatives, especially in the epithelium of sweat glands. The secretory part of the sweat gland is type-1-precursor and H-type-1 positive while its excretory part is Lea, Leb, sialyl-Lea, and Ley positive. On the eye surface the disappearance of Lex at 10 weeks and of the H-type-1, sialyl-Lex, and Ley at week 35 starts in the central cornea in front of the lens. The corneal epithelium and the conjunctiva have similar antigens to those of excretory and secretory parts of the sweat gland, respectively. Invaginations and folding of the epidermis might preserve the embryonic staining. We propose that fucosylation patterns are associated with the embryonic origin and differentiation stage of tissue. The early and transient presence of Lex is associated with FUT4 or FUT9 activities, while the late appearance of Lewis antigens is related to other α3-fucosyltransferases.

    Notes: Abstract This paper studies the list of 60 faint standard stars of Neckel and Chini (1980) in theUBVRI Johnson photometric system. These standards have been used due to the collaboration in the HIPPARCOS project of our department, but this work was made in parallel of this and the results were not used. We have re-reduced the standard stars using our own method of reduction from a large number of selected observations made at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional and at the Centro Astronómico Hispano-Alemán, both at Calar Alto, Spain, and at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma Island, Spain. The reduction method used is explained and the results are given for the four colours used: (B-V),(U-B), (V-R), and (V-I), together with theV magnitude, that is, we have corrected many standard stars for each colour and magnitude. These results are supported with graphs where residual colour (o magnitude), is plotted against corresponding colour (or magnitude). Finally, our (V-R) and (V-I) results are compared to those of Tayloret al. (1989), with a good correspondence.

    Notes: Summary The presence of human blood-group antigens was analyzed in the rat cochlea during its postnatal development, using anti-A, anti-B and anti-H antibodies. At no stage was reactivity with anti-A antibody observed. With the anti-H antibody, a strong reactivity was observed from 1 to 9 days after birth within hair cells and some other surface epithelial cells of the cochlear duct. After postnatal day 9, only a faint reactivity persisted in a few non-sensory cells. With the anti-B antibody, only hair cells were selectively labeled. At early stages (postnatal day 1 and 3), the reactivity was intense and observed both around the cell surface and within the supranuclear region of cytoplasm. Later on, the reactivity decreased; it was limited at postnatal day 9 to a reactive spot below the cuticular plate. Results are compared with a preliminary finding describing the first appearance of B and H antigens in the organ of Corti at a prenatal stage, and with data concerning other sensory and neural structures. The appearance and progressive disappearance of B and H antigens on sensory and non-sensory cells can be correlated with significant events in the development of the cochlea. The transient expression of B and H antigens in cochlear sensory cells may correspond to developmental changes in their surface glycoconjugates.
