    Notes: Summary Four melon (Cucumis melo L.) cultivars were tested for salt tolerance at germination, seedling growth stages, and plant maturation. ‘Noy Amid’ was the most tolerant during germination, achieving 56% germination in 15,000 mg/l NaCl solution. However, this cultivar and ‘Eshkolit Ha 'Amaqim’ were relatively sensitive during the first 4 days' growth of the radicle and the hypocotyl, and the first 3 weeks' development of the seedling. Their yields were reduced under saline as compared with non-saline field conditions. In contrast, ‘Honey Dew’ and ‘Rochet’ had little or no germination in 15,000 mg/l NaCl but showed salt tolerance during seedling growth stages. Yield of ‘Honey Dew’ was unaffected by saline field conditions, and that of ‘Rochet’ was not significantly reduced from the non-saline control. Thus, selection for salt tolerance in melons appears feasible during early vegetative growth stages but not during germination.

    Notes: Summary Pachytene chromosome morphology was compared in nine races ofRicinus communis L. (2n = 20), using pollen mother cells (PMCs) and light microscopy. Of the ten bivalents, only the two possessing nucleolar organizing regions (NORs), chromosomes 2 and 7, exhibit structural variations among the races. The NORs are located in the short arms of these two chromosomes. Most of the observed structural variations affect these short arms, which are similar morphologically and consist largely of heterochromatic segments. The PMCs contain a single nucleolus and this is associated with the NOR of each of the two chromosomes at a particular frequency in each race. In eight races, a nucleolar constriction (NC) is present in either chromosome 2 or chromosome 7. In these races, the nucleolus is associated with the chromosome possessing an NC at a frequency of 100% and with the chromosome lacking an NC at a frequency ranging between 5.6 and 100%, depending upon the race. No microscopically visible NC is present in the ninth race. In this race, the nucleolus is associated with both chromosomes 2 and 7 at a frequency of 100%. The association of the nucleolus with a chromosome possessing an NC is at the NC and with a chromosome lacking an NC is at the terminal heterochromatic segment of the short arm. Several interpretations are offered to account for the variations in frequency of association between the nucleolus and each of the nucleolar organizing chromosomes. It is suggested that the two non-linked NORs have evolved through some intragenomic changes rather than polyploidy, that this species is highly intolerant to structural variations other than those occurring in or near the NORs, and that structural variations in the nucleolar organizing chromosomes are not associated with racial variations in plant phenotype.

    Notes: Abstract Achieving the required tolerance of positioning between two features is not obvious when features are produced in multiple set-ups where the fixture/workpiece interface plays a critical role. From a computer-aided process planning perspective, the suitability of a fixturing feature to achieve the required tolerances has to be evaluated. A model of an indicator for a locating quality is proposed here based upon the distribution of a small displacement of the workpiece compatible with the required tolerance onto the candidate fixturing surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract The pachytene complement in microsporocytes was compared among ten races of Ricinus communis L., the castor plant (2n=20). Four kinds of pachytene variations were observed: (1) variation in degree of spreading of the chromosomes; (2) variation in degree of attenuation of heterochromatin; (3) variation in morphology, which appeared to be restricted to the two nucleolar organizing bivalents; (4) variation in frequency of association of each of these two bivalents with the nucleolus. It is suggested that variations in the pachytene chromosomes occur ubiquitously in this species.

Resistance to ZYMV in Menina was conferred by a single dominant gene designated Zym.
