    Notes: Abstract The performance of a commercially available assay for detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody in saliva samples was assessed. Samples of saliva were collected from 270 individuals whose HCV antibody status was determined by serum assay (161 HCV-positive, 109 HCV-negative). The saliva samples were tested for the presence of HCV antibodies using a modified protocol. The sensitivity was 94.4% (95% CI, 89.3–97.2%) and the specificity 99.1% (95% CI, 94.3–100%). Although the optical density in tests on HIV-positive individuals was lower than that among HIV-negative individuals, the HIV status had no significant influence on the results of the HCV assay in saliva. These findings suggest that tests on saliva can be useful in epidemiological studies for estimating the prevalence of HCV in populations that are difficult to reach.

    Notes: Abstract A double barrier Single Electron Transistor is realized in two dimensions by confining the 2-D electron gas of a GaAs/GaAlAs heterojunction to a small island by means of Schottky gates. Two gates provide adjustable tunnel barriers and a central gate controls the electron number in the island. The island has small single-particle energy level spacing and forms a metallic island. Periodic conductance oscillations characteristic of Coulomb blockade are observed when the central gate voltage is varied. The ability to vary the tunnel conductance allows us to study the basic physics of the Coulomb blockade: our results show that the quantum charge fluctuation mechanism which limits the tunneling blockade at low temperature is of second order in tunnel barrier transparencies in agreement with the charge Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling (q-MQT) or co-tunneling model.

    Notes: Abstract: The phase diagram of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2PF6has been revisited using transport measurements with an improved control of the applied pressure. We have found a 0.8 kbar wide pressure domain below the critical point (9.43 kbar, 1.2 K) for the stabilisation of the superconducting ground state featuring a coexistence regime between spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC). The inhomogeneous character of the said pressure domain is supported by the analysis of the resistivity between T SDW and T SC and the superconducting critical current. The onset temperature T SC is practically constant ( 1.20±0.01 K) in this region where only the SC/SDW domain proportion below T SC is increasing under pressure. An homogeneous superconducting state is recovered above the critical pressure with T SC falling at increasing pressure. We propose a model comparing the free energy of a phase exhibiting a segregation between SDW and SC domains and the free energy of homogeneous phases which explains fairly well our experimental findings.

    Notes: Abstract: We report a detailed characterization of quantum Hall effect (QHE) influence on the linear and non-linear resistivity tensor in FISDW phases of the organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6. We show that the behavior at low electric fields, observed for nominally pure single-crystals with different values of the resistivity ratio, is fully consistent with a theoretical model, which takes QHE nature of FISDW and residual quasi-particle density associated with different crystal imperfection levels into account. The non-linearity in longitudinal and diagonal resistivity tensor components observed at large electric fields reconciles preceding contradictory results. Our theoretical model offers a qualitatively good explanation of the observed features if a sliding of the density wave with the concomitant destruction of QHE, switched on above a finite electric field, is taken into account.

    Notes: Abstract Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is known to regulate the level of superoxide radicals inside cells. The purpose of this work was to investigate the role of SOD activity in tissue damage produced by superoxide radicals. SOD was measured in polymorphonuclear cells of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and controls. The distinct SOD activities, including manganese-containing and copperzinc-containing enzymes, were evaluated in cytoplasma and mitochondria of human granulocytes. Except for the comparison between total SOD and cytoplasmic copper-zinc SOD, no correlation was found among the different SOD levels. Moreover, a significant decrease was observed only for cytoplasmic manganesecontaining enzyme in granulocytes of adults with rheumatoid arthritis. These data confirm the necessity of evaluation of various SOD classes and suggest the interest of biochemical tests in granulocytes for early diagnosis and better comprehension of tissue damage due to inflammation.

    Notes: Abstract The quasi-2D organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 presents properties in the superconducting state which are similar to most anisotropic high-Tc compounds. The smaller upper critical fields (≃100kOe) enable us to study the entire (H, T) phase diagram by electrical transport measurements: large superconducting fluctuations lead to a broadening of the normal-superconducting transition as well as to the presence of a phase transition line between a solid and a viscous liquid phase. In low magnetic fields, the displacement of the vortices in the liquid phase is due to the creation of double kinks in the flux lines.

    Notes: Abstract We report single crystal magnetoresistivity measurements of the organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 in magnetic fields applied perpendicularly to the superconducting planes. We present an analysis of the behavior of the resistivity in the vortex liquid phase. It turns out, that at high temperatures and sufficiently low fields the vortex liquid phase can be described as a very viscous vortex liquid of 3D vortices with activation energies arising from generations of vortex-doublekinks. Quantitatively a value of the superconducting anisotropy parameter γ = ξab/ξc ≈ 80 can be derived from the measurements presented here.
