Inelastic neutron scattering experiments, up to energy transfers of 250 meV, were performed on α-Ce at 8 K using polarized neutrons with polarization analysis. The sample, weighting 300 g, was elaborated by cooling down to 77 K in a pressure cell. At low temperature, the pressure was released and the sample extracted from the cell. The magnetic signal, negligibly small below 200 meV, is significant at higher energies. The results show that the ground state in this system is a nonmagnetic singlet; they reveal a characteristic energy of about 250 meV. These properties are reminiscent of those observed in other intermediate valence systems, e.g., CeSn3 and CePd3. They are related to other physical properties such as bulk susceptibility and electronic specific heat within the framework of both intermediate valence and Kondo models.
