    Notes: Abstract The polymerization of styrene in three-component oil-in-water microemulsions made with the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide is studied by dilatometry and quasielastic light scattering as a function of type and concentration of initiator. Fast polymerization rates, high conversions, and high molecular weight polymers are achieved with both oil-soluble (AIBN) and water-soluble (potassium persulfate) initiators. The rate of polymerization shows initiation and termination intervals, but no constant-rate interval is observed. Stable monodisperse microlatexes are obtained with both types of initiators. For both AIBN and potassium persulfate, polystyrene molecular weight is proportional to initiator concentration [I]−0.4 and particle radii decrease as [I]−0.2. Polymerization initiation occurs in or at the microemulsion droplets, and polymer particles grow by recruiting monomer and surfactant from uninitiated swollen micelles.

    Notes: Abstract Dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide — Dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium hydroxide — water mixtures were studied with ion-selective electrodes, and the aggregation behavior, degree of ionization of the micelles and the distribution constants of bromide and hydroxide ions between water and micelles were found, showing that some suppositions about the interpretation of micellar catalysis are incorrect, and these interpretations must be revised. The results support the mass action model for the theoretical treatment of micellar catalysis.

    Notes: Abstract The aggregation of dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH) aqueous solutions has been studied by several methods. It is stepwise and four critical points were found. AtC T=(2.51±0.10)×10−4 mol · dm−3 the surface excess becomes zero, atC T=(1.300±0.041)×10−3 mol · dm−3 small aggregates from, which grow with concentration. AtC T=(1.108±0.010)×10−2 mol · dm−3 true micelles form (CMC) and at (3.02±0.28)×10−2 mol · dm−3 the structure of micelles probably changes affecting their properties. The DTAOH micelles are highly ionized (α=0.8) at the CMC, and decreases to reach very small values when the total concentration increases.

    Notes: Abstract  In this work, the linear viscoelastic properties of cetyl-trimethylammonium tosilate–water system are predicted by the modeling of the relaxation spectrum. The modeled spectrum of relaxation times is of the “wedge-box” type where the “wedge” portion is located at the short-time scale of relaxation times and the “box” part covers the long-time scale. The linear viscoelastic properties are calculated through the exact relationships with the suggested spectrum. Agreement between the calculated expressions and experimental data of the moduli and the stress relaxation function is found. Comparison is also made with predictions of the empirical expressions of the Cole–Cole and the Williams–Watts models.

    Notes: Abstract The behaviors of low-concentration aqueous solutions of 10-undecenoic acid and its sodium salt were studied by several techniques. The acid does not have a critical micelle concentration, but gives an emulsion of very small droplets at (0.8–1) ×  10−4 mol dm−3. The emulsion was clearly visible by eye at 0.002 mol dm−3. The sodium salt has a stepwise aggregation process, giving premicellar aggregates at 0.023 ± 0.008 mol dm−3, which grow to form micelles at 0.117 ± 0.007 mol dm−3. The compositions of the solution and the micelles were also studied.

    Notes: Abstract Allyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide was polymerized by γ-ray irradiation in both hexagonal and cubic mesophases, and the conversion–time curves were obtained. The maximum conversion was about 35%, and the polymer remained in the liquid-crystalline structure formed by the nonpolymerized monomers. The influence of polymerization on the distribution of water in the different types related to the hydrophilic surfaces of microstructures was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The incomplete polymerization was explained by steric constraints in the liquid-crystalline structures.

    Notes: Abstract The phase behavior in the dilute region of the didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB)/water system is studied with a battery of techniques. The critical vesicle concentration (cvc), measured by tensiometry, conductimetry, ion-selective-electrode potentiometry and dye solubilization, is similar to the value reported in the literature. Moreover, the combination of surfactant-ion-selective- electrode and bromide-ion-selective-electrode potentiometry indicates that the vesicles are substantially ionized (α ≈ 0.5) in the proximity of the cvc. The transition from small unilamellar vesicles to larger multilamellar liposomes was detected at 0.2 wt% by viscometry, conductimetry and dye solubilization measurements. The rheology of the DDAB/water system was studied as a function of surfactant concentration and temperature. Non- Newtonian behavior, viscoelasticity, yield stresses and time-dependent flow behavior were observed. Maxima and minima in the dynamic moduli and in conductivity are related to structural changes and phase transitions. Moreover, in time-dependent shear flow, the microstructure is modified and the rheological response shifts from thixotropic to antithixotropic or vice versa, depending on the DDAB concentration and the level and duration of the final applied stress. The conductivity behavior in the Lam1 phase region can be qualitatively explained by the capillary superconductivity theory. This conductivity behavior occurs when the thickness of the aqueous lamella is of the same order of magnitude as the Debye length.

    Notes: Methyl methacrylate has been polymerized in three-component o/w microemulsions made with the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). The effects of temperature type and concentration of initiator (AIBN or potassium persulfate), and surfactant and monomer concentration on polymerization kinetics are investigated. Final conversions and reaction rates increase with increasing monomer and initiator concentrations and with higher reaction temperatures. The rate of polymerization shows initiation and termination intervals, but no constant rate interval is observed. Both molecular weight and particle size decrease as the concentration of initiator increases, regardless of type of initiator. Latexes with small particle size (〈 70 nm) and high molecular weights (〉106) were obtained in all cases. Activation energies for the microemulsion polymerization of MMA with AIBN (10.3 kcal/mol) and KPS (13.4 kcal/mol) are smaller than that of bulk polymerization using AIBN (20 kcal/mol). © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The polymerization of butyl methacrylate in three-component microemulsions prepared with the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethlammonium bromide is reported here as a function of monomer and surfactant content in parent microemulsions, type and concentration of initiator, and temperature. Fast reaction rates and high conversions are achieved in all cases. Final latexes are bluish-opaque and stable, and contain spherical particles with diameters in the range of 20 to 30 nm, depending on composition of the parent microemulsions and reaction conditions. Each of these particles is composed of a few macromolecules of high molecular weight (2 to 4 × 106 Dalton). Both particle size and average molecular weight remain constant throughout the reaction, suggesting a continuous nucleation mechanism. Analysis of the molecular weight distribution indicates that the controlling termination mechanism is chain-transfer to monomer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Abstract  The hydration of dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH) micelles was determined by viscosity measurements, giving 39.2±7.0 water molecules per micellized dodecyltrimethylammonium ion. This result is lower than the hydration of DTAB micelles, which is about 65. This difference may be due to the effect of the electrorestrictive structure-making hydroxide ion on the hydration of the alkyltrimethylammonium head group, in comparison with the less hydrated structure-breaking bromide ion.
