Notes: Abstract On January 29ty, 1986, the third largest gas outburst in Japan took place at Sunagawa Coal Mine, which is the only hydraulic mine in Japan. It occurred at a face of a cross-cut, just after a coal seam was outcropped by blasting for drivage of the cross-cut. The site of the gas outburst was located 1,180 m below the surface. No workers were injured, but the cross-cut was plugged with 1,600 m3 of coal fragments extending over 100 m behind the face and 60,000 m3 of methane gas was emitted. The site of the gas outburst was investigated in detail to clarify the geological features. A normal and a reverse fault existed at the site. The area of the ejected zone was about 400 m2 and extended upward along the normal fault. The shape of the ejected zone suggests a great role of the normal fault on the gas outburst. Digital seismograms, recorded by a mine-wide seismic array at the coal mine, consisting of 27 microseismic events were used to investigate the gas outburst. Magnitude, seismic energy release, distribution of hypocenter and focal mechanism were analyzed. Taking the shape of the ejected zone together with results of the seismological investigation into consideration, it appears that the seismicity started with left-lateral faulting of the reverse fault and then right-lateral faulting of the normal fault followed. The faulting of the normal fault might be the direct cause and be the predominant mechanism of the gas outburst.

Notes: Summary Two min of intraluminal perfusion of the rat proximal tubules with autologous serum induced marked ultrastructural alterations including extensive cytoplasmic vesiculation due to swelling of rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae and occasional extrusion of nuclei and cytoplasm into the lumen. Within 4 min pronounced vesiculation of mitochondria was observed. These findings are consistent with the notion that serum-induced inhibition of proximal tubular fluid absorption is due to cell lysis, presumably mediated by complement activation.

Notes: Abstract We have demonstrated the presence of estrogen receptor mRNA and the mature protein in the cytoplasm and nucleus, respectively, of a 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzathracene-induced submandibular gland tumor in female rats. We have previously shown that progesterone receptors are also present in human salivary gland tumors. These results suggest that endocrine therapy may be effective in treatment of submandibular gland tumors.

Notes: Summary Psammoma bodies at the perivascular area in five cases of meningioma were examined with the electron microscope. In general, meningocytic cells invest the outer aspect of blood vessels, which are constituted by multilayered basal laminae, collagen fibers, microfibrils, and pericytes. Remnants of degenerated cells are observed in some areas of the perivascular space. Matrix vesicles and matrix giant bodies with or without mineralized deposits are also present in those areas. Energy disperisve, X-ray microanalysis evidenced the presence of both calcium and phosphorus (probably hydroxyapatite) mineralized precipitates. Production of psammoma bodies in the perivascular area may indicate that matrix vesicles and matrix giant bodies are derived from degenerated cells, which then sequestrate hydroxyapatite crystals to form psammoma bodies.

Notes: Summary Eight cases of central neurocytomas were studied by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Seven tumors were located in the lateral ventricles and one in the subependymal region. All but one patient had a favorable postoperative course. The tumors were composed of small uniform cells possessing amitotic round nuclei with frequent perinuclear halos, a few Homer Wright rosettes and no ganglion cells; an appearance resembling that of oligodendroglioma. Immunohistochemical studies disclosed neuron-specific enolase and Leu-7 positivity in all tumors, S-100 protein-positive cells were found in six, while glial fibrillary acidic protein —and vimentin-positive cells were confined to the blood vessels. Myelin basic protein as well as neurofilament were not detected in the tumors. Synaptophysin-positive areas were seen in one tumor. Ultrastructural examination showed distinctive neuronal tumor cells which had a cytoplasm with sparse dense-core vesicles and thin cell processes containing parallel microtubules. They were classified into three different types of tumor cells according to the extent of differentiation. The most consistent finding for histological diagnosis was the presence of typical or abortive synapses with clear and dense-core vesicles. Additionally, synaptophysin may be a specific marker for some central neurocytomas.

Notes: Summary Viral infection, especially by reactivation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been considered to be a possible explanation for the pathogenesis of idiopathic peripheral facial nerve palsy (Bell's palsy). We investigated whether the geniculate ganglia of man contain latent HSV type 1 (HSV-1), and compared the frequency of HSV-infected ganglia and that of latently infected neurons in human geniculate ganglia and in trigeminal ganglia. From autopsy specimens of eight adults 15 geniculate ganglia and 16 trigeminal ganglia were examined by means of in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining. The HSV-1 genome was detected in 11 of the 15 (71%) geniculate ganglia and in 13 of the 16 (81%) trigeminal ganglia. No HSV antigen was noted in any of the ganglia. The incidence of latently infected neurons was 0.9% in the trigeminal ganglia and 5.3% in the geniculate ganglia. The difference in percentages between the two types of ganglia was significant. Our results suggest that reactivation of latent HSV in the geniculate ganglia is a probable cause of some cases of herpetic stomatitis and of idiopathic peripheral facial nerve palsy.

Notes: Summary Three patients with Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD), who died aged 23, 29 and 34 years, are reported. There was extensive brain malformation, but the most severe pattern of cortical dysplasia was absent in one case and in the other two localized bilaterally to small areas near the occipital poles. In two cases, numerous neurofibrillary tangles were observed in the locus ceruleus and nucleus basalis of Meynert. Electron microscopy revealed paired helical filaments, with a maximal width of about 25 nm and regular constrictions at approximately 80 nm intervals. The occurrence of neurofibrillary tangles, which is unknown in younger patients, suggests the presence of degenerative processes in the brains of the older patients with FCMD.

Notes: Summary The effect of dibutyryladenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (dibutyryl cAMP) on the expression of glutathione S-transferase placental type (GST-P) was examined in rat glioma cell line using an immunohistochemical technique. Cultured T9 glioma cells were negative for GST-P activity under normal conditions. However, treatment with 1 mM dibutyryl cAMP produced GST-P expression in about 50% of the cells, as well as some morphological changes. The expression of GST-P was increased with addition of dibutyryl cAMP together with 1 μg/ml allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) or 0.1 μg/ml benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC). With these combinated treatments, almost all cultured cells showed a strong positive reaction for GST-P, although AITC or BITC alone elicited GST-P in only 5% of the cultured cells. The results of the present study indicate that dibutyryl cAMP causes functional as well as morphological differentiation of T9 glioma cells.

Notes: Abstract The occurrence of fluorite deposits in Japan is limited in the provinces characterized by tin and tungsten mineralization within Southwest Japan. The deposits were formed near acidic igneous rocks of Cretaceous to Tertiary age. The ores in limestone are generally associated with skarn and metallic ore minerals such as cassiterite, scheelite and chalcopyrite. Granitic rocks in the provinces are the ilmenite-series (Ishihara, 1977) having enhanced fluorine contents and high initial strontium ratios. A reducing condition of the ilmenite-series granitic magma may have been more favorable for the concentration of fluorine in the residual magma because of the crystallization of relatively Fe-rich mafic minerals. Presence of thick crust bearing carbonaceous matter at the site of magmatism could have involved in the enrichment of fluorine as well as the reducing condition.
