Notes: Abstract The extent of conservation of constitutive heterochromatin in three species of Mus viz. M. musculus, M. booduga and M. dunni, with shared cytological properties and homologous DNA sequences has been studied. The cytological properties were investigated by doing fluorescence staining and condensation inhibition of their chromosomes with Hoechst 33258. Both the parameters indicate the occurrence of a reduced quantum of “M. musculus like heterochromatin” at specific sites in the other two genomes. In situ hybridization of the nick translated 3H-labelled M. musculus satellite DNA with M. booduga and M. dunni chromosomes, also corroborates our Hoechst 33258 findings and comparable variation in the amount and site of occurrence of sequences homologous to M. musculus satellite DNA in these species are noticed. The study thus provides a good example of a gradual quantitative variation of a particular type of heterochromatin and in turn of the repetitive DNA constituting it in different related species. Further since the heterochromatin in M. booduga and M. dunni is expected to contain different repetitive DNA sequences in addition to those homologous to M. musculus satellite DNA, it is proposed that a change in the balance between two or more repetitive sequences in heterochromatin may be more crucial in its evolutionary consequences rather than a mere increase or decrease of a homogeneous repetitive sequence.

Notes: Abstract Six mutant strains of Rhizobium were isolated after UV treatment which could exhibit nitrogenase activity in Burk's N-free medium without any supplement. The activity ranged between 99.5 and 113 nmol/mg cell dry weight and hour. Two of the parent strains belonged to soybean, and one each to mungbean and Sesbania sp. Both the parent and mutant strains exhibited nitrogenase activity in CS 7 medium. One of the mutants retained its capacity to produce nodules on soybean roots.

Notes: Summary The converting enzyme inhibitor CGS 13928C was evaluated in 15 healthy male volunteers. First the efficacy of a single oral dose of 0.5, 1, 2 or 5 mg in antagonizing the pressor response to exogenous angiotensin I was tested with continuous monitoring of the blood pressure and heart rate by an intraarterial catheter. CGS 13928C 1, 2 and 5 mg consistently reduced the response to angiotensin within 2 to 3 h and for a period exceeding the 4 h of monitoring. The 2 mg dose was hardly more effective than 1 mg and 5 mg did not further enhance the blockade. Subsequently, plasma renin and converting enzyme activity, angiotensin I, angiotensin II and aldosterone were measured serially before and up to 72 h following oral administration of either 1 mg (n=7) or 2 mg (n=8) CGS 13928C. As expected, plasma renin activity and angiotensin I rose, while plasma converting enzyme activity, angiotensin II and aldosterone fell following both doses of the drug. No side-effects occurred. In normal volunteers CGS 13928C is an effective and extremely potent, orally active converting enzyme inhibitor.

Notes: Summary In this prospective study 52 patients with spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage were examined with respect to cardiac arrhythmias and their relationship to cerebral lesions. A continuous ECG was registered over an average of five days. Sinus tachycardia was the most frequently recorded arrhythmia, followed by multifocal ventricular extrasystoles, couplets, frequent supraventricular extrasystoles, non-sustained ventricular tachycardia, asystolia and sinus arrhythmia. A significant correlation was found between the clinical manifestation of a midbrain syndrome and sinus arrhythmia, and multifocal ventricular extrasystoles. This correlation points to the autonomic cardiovascular centres as the structures involved.

Notes: In this work, some surface properties of AISI M2 steel were improved by a thermoreactivedeposition process. Gas nitriding was realized on AISI M2 steel at 550°C for 2 h in anammoniac atmosphere and then, titanizing treatment performed on pre-nitrided steel in the powdermixture consisting of ferro-titanium, ammonium chloride and alumina at 1000°C for 1-4 h.Structural characterization of titanium nitride layer formed on the surface of AISI M2 steel wascarried out by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and Xraydiffraction (XRD) analysis. The hardness measurements of titanium nitride layer wereconducted under 10 g loads by using Vickers microhardness indenter. Structural analysis studiesshowed that titanium nitride layers formed on the AISI M2 steel samples were smooth, compact andhomogeneous. XRD analysis show that the coating layer formed on the steel samples includes TiN,Fe6Mo7N2, C0.7N0.3Ti, C0.3N0.7Ti and V2N phases. The hardness of titanium nitride layers formed onthe steel samples is between 2040±186 and 2418±291 HV0.01. The thickness of titanium nitridelayer formed on the steel samples ranged from 3.86±0.43 9m to 6.13±0.47 9m, depending ontreatment time

Notes: Thermo-diffusion coatings containing Nitrogen, Carbon and Niobium (N+C+Nb) onAISI D2 steel have been carried out by an initial tufftriding process followed by saturation withNiobium. The properties of the diffusion layer, namely microstructure, phase composition andmicro-hardness of the Niobium carbonitride layer, have been studied. The influence of treatmenttime of Niobizing on the thickness of the metallized layer and its phase composition has beenstudied. Nitriding treatment was performed at 575°C for 2 h. Then, the Niobizing treatment wasperformed by pack method in the powder mixture consisting of ferro-Niobium, ammonium chlorideand alumina at 1000°C for 1–4 h. The phases formed on the Niobium carbonitride coated steel wereNbN and NbC, confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The longer the treatment times, thethicker the Niobium carbonitride layer became. The thickness of Niobium carbonitride layer waschanging between 6.53 3m and 17.45 3m, depending on treatment time and temperature. Themicrohardness of Niobium carbonitride layer formed on the AISI D2 steel was changing between2132±203 and 2814±245 HV0.01 from surface to interior

Notes: A finite element solution on the interaction of surface radiation and variable property laminar natural convection is presented. Finite element formulation of the governing equations, associated with variable property natural convection, and incorporation of the radiative boundary conditions has been extensively discussed. The study also aims to highlight the limiting value of the terminal temperature difference (TTD), below which the natural convection heat transfer becomes the sole heat transfer mode, i.e. the effect of surface radiation can be neglected. The effects of variations of emissivity and TTD are also presented.
