Notes: [Auszug] SIR,-In your note on the Medical Research Council's annual report for 1968-69 and, in particular, concerning the report of the Radiobiology Committee under the chairmanship of Professor Paton (Nature, 223, 437; 1969), you make the statement that "radiological protection is not the pressing topic it ...

Notes: [Auszug] It occurred to us that an answer to the problem might be found by examining the actions of two enzymes already known in muscle, namely, a-glucose-1 -phosphate kinase4 and a-glucose-1 -phosphate dismutase8. These enzymes catalyse the following reactions a-Glucose- 1 -phosphate + ATP a-glucose-1, 6 ...

Notes: Abstract We report a case of pseudoretroconversion in which, clinically and pathologically, it appeared that an endodermal sinus tumor retroconverted to mature teratoma. An 8-month-old white female infant with a sacrococcygeal tumor, diagnosed by biopsy as endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor), was treated with chemotherapy. The residual tumor after treatment was mature teratoma confirmed by imaging and by pathological examination. We present the computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings with pathological correlation.

Notes: Abstract The role of gravity in the autolysis of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was studied by growing cells on Earth and in microgravity on Space Station Mir. Autolysis analysis was completed by examining the death phase or exponential decay of cells for approximately 4 months following the stationary phase. Consistent with published findings, the stationary-phase cell population was 170% and 90% higher in flight B. subtilis and E. coli cultures, respectively, than in ground cultures. Although both flight autolysis curves began at higher cell densities than control curves, the rate of autolysis in flight cultures was identical to that of their respective ground control rates.

Notes: Summary The clinical distinction of a ruptured knee joint or popliteal cyst from a deep venous thrombosis is important in the planning of treatment, particularly to avoid anticoagulant therapy. Bruising, which may be severe, may occur when inappropriate anticoagulants are administered. It is less well recognised that spontaneous bruising may occur with a ruptured knee joint even when anticoagulant therapy has not been given. A case is presented which demonstrates this useful physical sign and shows also the value of the patient's history in eliciting the diagnosis. The bruising extended to the foot, its gravitational and propulsive advance being halted by the pressure of footwear. This appearance has not been emphasised in the rheumatology literature.
