Description / Table of Contents: Summary The transfer of leucocytes from rabbits, which were immunized with vaccinia antigen, onto tissue cultures was followed by a challenge infection with variola virus or vaccinia virus. The experiments show the following results: 1. vaccinia antigen (preparation of killed vaccinia virus) is not able to induce a transferable cell immunity versus the variola virus; 2. the method described to challenge the “transfer immunity” against vaccinia virus with the corresponding strain of vaccinia virus may be succesfully employed for standardisation of preparations of vaccinia antigen.

Notes: Summary The immunomodulating effect of a new heterologous antigen (PIND-AVI) on helper (inducer) and suppressor T cells was investigated. Primarily decreased T4 values $$\left( { \leqslant \overline X _{T4} - 2S.D.} \right)$$ increased after treatment with PIND (P〈0.005, using Student'st-test;n=15). Primarily increased T8 values ( $$ \geqslant \overline X _{T8} + 2S.D.$$ ; obtained for normal persons) decreased after therapy (P〈0.001;n=10). An increase of T4/T8 ratio (P〈0.005 and 〈0.001) to normal values was observed in both cases. T4 and T8 values within the mean ±2 S.D. were not influenced significantly (n=13). In spite of different primary values, the amount of lymphocytes/mm3 was not significantly influenced. It appears advisable to check the results of treatment continuously every few weeks.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Lymphocyte cultures from patients with M.S. undergo blastoid cell transformation after challenge with encephalitogenic protein (e.p.), immunoglobulin G and, to some degree, with Ig M. The same transformation may be induced by autologous and heterologous cerebrospinal fluid from M.S.-patients. The reaction seems to depend on the content of Ig G in the cerebrospinal fluid. The observed immune response in the lymphocyte cultures suggests a dalayed type hypersensibility reaction in the tissue of M.S.-patients, directed against e.p., Ig G and, to some degree, against Ig M. The pathogenesis of M.S. is not sufficiently understood and still awaits elucidation. The results of further experiments will be published in detail elsewhere.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
