Notes: Summary A 46-year-old woman presented acute sensori-motor neuropathy of the Guillain-Barré type, followed by a protracted course of profound autonomic and sensory dysfunction. Tests of autonomic functions showed denervation hypersensitivity. Neuropathologically, the trigeminal sensory nuclei, solitary nucleus, the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and dorsal spinal roots showed severe degeneration. Degeneration was found both in the preganglionic (intermediolateral cell columns of the spinal cord) and postganglionic (sympathetic ganglion and celiac ganglion) neurons of the sympathetic nervous system, and the preganglionic (dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus) and postganglionic (Auerbach's plexus) neurons of the parasympathetic nervous system.

Notes: Summary Monoclonal antibodies (MRC OX-6 and OX-17) recognized three types of cells expressing Ia antigen during the course of acute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in rats. In earlier stages of the disease, in animals with or without paralysis, Ia antigens were mostly localized to subarachnoidal and perivascular lymphocytic and histiocytic cell infiltrates, possibly serving as antigen-presenting cells. On the other hand, in convalescent rats, Ia antigens were expressed in a large number of cells with dendritic processes heavily populating the spinal gray matter. The appearance of these Ia-expressing cells in the convalescent stage coincided with the development of degenerating axon terminals in the spinal gray matter. These Ia-expressing cells possessed morphological features characteristic of microglia and were positive for ML-1 lectin but did not express glial fibrillary acidic protein. Immune electron microscopy disclosed the presence of Ia reaction products in the Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane of these cells with dendritic processes, indicating active synthesis of Ia molecules in microglia. In addition, Ia antigens were localized to the cells with ultrastructural features of macrophages. Thus, Ia-expressing cells in EAE seems to play dual roles: the induction of immunological reactions during earlier stages and the participation in reparative processes during convalescence.

Notes: Summary To clarify the implication of the major histocompatibility complex class II (Ia) antigen induction in microglia following Wallerian degeneration in the central nervous system (CNS), experimental allergic encephalitis (EAE) was adoptively transferred to Lewis rats in which Ia antigens had been induced in microglia at the sites of Wallerian degeneration. In addition to randomly distributed typical EAE lesions, the recipient rats developed distinct inflammatory lesions in accord with the distribution of Ia-positive microglia; i.e., in the ipsilateral thalamus after cortical cryoinjury, and in the ipsilateral optic nerve, the contralateral optic tract and superior colliculus after unilateral eye ball enucleation. Thus, the EAE locus may be targeted by this approach. The inflammatory response was inducible by transfer of myelin basic protein-stimulated lymphocytes but not by transfer of phytohemagglutinin-stimulated or non-stimulated lymphocytes. When examined using monoclonal antibody surface markers; OX-6 for Ia antigen, W3/13 for pan T lymphocyte and OX-8 for cytotoxic/suppresser T lymphocyte, the types of lymphocytes in these lesions did not differ from those in ordinary EAE lesions in the spinal cord. The potential role of non-immunologically induced Ia-positive cell clusters that serve as a target for autoimmune CNS diseases was discussed.

Notes: Abstract Intertidal molluscan faunas were studied on the exposed rocky shores of the Pacific coasts of Japan (excluding Hokkaido) to determine distribution patterns and latitudinal gradients of taxa. Collections were made at spring low tide in 1980. Five types of distribution patterns were found: tropical, tropical-temperate, warm-temperate, temperate, and boreal. Many examples of parallel species displacement, the term which Thorson (1957) proposed and generalized, were found. Latitudinal gradients of molluscan taxon were observed. Frequency of the Archaeogastropoda in gastropods increases northward, while frequency of the Mesogastropoda and the Neogastropoda decreases. Frequency of predatory gastropods decreases northward, and that of herbivorous ones increases. Commonness indices show that the molluscan fauna of the study sites situated within the wide area between the Kanto and Kyushu are closely related with each other, and they can be regarded as one province. The Tohoku district is less related with this region, and the Okinawa district is the least related.

Notes: Abstract After immunizing 8-month pregnant Holstein cows with human rotavirus, Wa strain, cow colostrum containing neutralizing antibody to human rotavirus, designated as Rota colostrum, was obtained. After randomly grouping 13 infants from a single orphanage, 6 infants received 20 ml of Rota colostrum every morning and 7 control infants received 20 ml of market milk. One month later, rotavirus associated diarrhea was observed in 6 of the 7 infants given milk and 1 out of the 6 infants given Rota colostrum. Orally administered Rota colostrum significantly protected infants from diarrhea caused by rotavirus (P 〈 0.05). Two out of 5 Rota colostrum recipients who were free from diarrhea showed rises in complement fixation (CF) antibody titer after the rotavirus infection epidemic. Thus, Rota colostrum prevented the outbreak of diarrhea but did not prevent immunological responses to natural rotavirus infection. In the therapeutic trial Rota colostrum had no effect on duration of diarrhea, bowel movements or virus shedding in stool. However, there were no side-effects of Rota colostrum.

Notes: Abstract When a high NaCl concentration was used to decrease selectively the synthesis of cell proteins, the synthesis of most cellular polypeptides was greatly diminished relative to human rotavirus proteins. Thus, in the presence of 150 mM excess NaCl, 11 viral polypeptides were clearly identified. However, hypertonic conditions also reduced viral protein synthesis to a different extent with individual proteins. No significant changes in viral protein synthesis occurred during incubation under the hypertonic condition for up to 6 h, and infectious virus yields of MA104 cells incubated in the hypertonic medium did not differ from the yields of untreated MA 104 cells. These results indicate that hypertonic conditions provide a useful tool for qualitative studies of viral protein synthesis in human rotavirus infected cells.

Notes: Summary The topographic distribution and organization of visual neurons in the prefrontal cortex was examined in alert monkeys. The animal was trained to fixate straight ahead onto a tinty, dim light spot. While he was fixating, we presented a stationary second light spot (RF spot) at various locations in the visual field and examined unit responses of the prefrontal neurons to the RF-spot stimulus. Many prefrontal neurons, especially those located in the relatively superficial layers of the cortex, responded with a phasic and/or tonic activation to the RF spot illuminating a limited extent of the visual field, a receptive field (RF) being so determined. The visual neurons were found to be widely distributed in the prearcuate and inferior dorsolateral areas. One hemisphere mainly represented the contralateral visual field. According to the location of the neurons in these areas, their visual properties varied with respect to RF eccentricity from the fovea and in size. The neurons located in the lateral part of the areas and close to the inferior arcuate sulcus had relatively small RFs representing the foveal and parafoveal regions. When the recording site was moved medially, the RFs became eccentric from the fovea and were larger. Then, the neurons located between the caudal end of the principal sulcus and the arcuate sulcus had RFs with a considerable eccentricity. The size of the RF became progressively larger for anteriorly located neurons and this occurred generally without a change in RF eccentricity. The visual neurons were not organized on a regular pattern in the cortex with regard to their RF direction (vector angle) from the foveal region. From these observations, we conclude, first, that the prearcuate and inferior dorsolateral areas of the prefrontal cortex are functionally differentiated so that the lateral area's function is related to central vision, while that of the medial area to ambient vision. Second, the RF representation on the cortex with loss of the vector relation may generate an interaction between separate objects in visual space and may subserve the control of attention performance.

Notes: Abstract A case of Letterer-Siwe disease in a thirteen-month-old girl with markedly swollen gums, an enlarged liver, and seborrhoic skin eruptions is reported. She died from pyopneumothorax in spite of treatment with prednisolone and vinblastine. Analysis of hepatic lipids showed that there was remarkable increase in free fatty acid, which is not seen in normal human liver. Cholesterol ester was also accumulated in the liver tissue. However, the concentrations of phospholipids and glycerides were low and lysophospholipid was found. It is assumed that there was increased intracellular lipolysis in the proliferating reticuloendothelial cells.

Notes: Abstract In order to study the in vitro effects of intact immunoglobulin (Ig) and gamma-interferon (INF-γ) in patients with Kawasaki disease, the production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) was measured in peripheral blood monocytes (PBM) both before and after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. Spontaneous production of TNF-α and IL-1β both before and after IVIG therapy was significantly higher than in healthy controls. Intact Ig enhanced in vitro the production of TNF-α and IL-1β both before and after IVIG therapy approximately 3–4 times as compared to the spontaneous production. INF-γ did not affect the production of the two cytokines. Ig enhanced IL-1β mRNA expression in PBM of KD by 3–8 times more than that of spontaneous production. Conclusion These results suggest that: (1) the mechanism of action of IVIG therapy in KD is not to cut down the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β and that (2) the changes of these cytokine levels may be related to the clinical effectiveness of high dose IVIG.
