Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to characterize regional blood flow (BF) in untreated cerebral gliomas (CG) using stable Xe-enhanced computed tomography (XeCT). XeCT of 38 patients with untreated CG were analyzed and compared with CT and magnetic resonance images (MRI) and histopathological findings. Individual averaged BF values for tumour in 29 high grade gliomas (HGGs) and 9 low grade gliomas (LGGs) were intermediate between averaged BF values for cortex and white matter in the non-tumour bearing hemisphere. All averaged BF values for cyst and central necrosis were very low. In 27 HGGs, BF in tumour was relatively high in ring-enhancement lesions on CT and MRI, but was low even in viable tumour centers showing no contrast enhancement. In the other 2 HGGs, BF was low in tumour center and relatively high in tumour periphery regardless of homogeneous enhancement. In 5 HGGs, averaged BF value of the cortex outside surrounding oedema was higher than that of cortex in the non-tumour bearing hemisphere. In LGGs, BF distribution in tumour was homogeneously low in 3 small-sized and heterogeneous in 6 large-sized lesions including moderately high and low BF regions. These differences in BF pattern between HGGs and LGGs on XeCT might be helpful in considering to some extent the histopathology of untreated cerebral glioma pre-operatively.

Notes: Summary Frequent transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs) in the territory fed by the anastomosed superficial temporal artery (STA) after combined therapeutic internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion and extra-cranial-intracranial bypass is described in a 52-year-old woman with a giant aneurysm in the supraclinoid portion of the left ICA showing impairment of visual acuity in the left eye and right upper quadrantanopia. After the balloon test occlusion of the left ICA which was tolerated, the left STA-middle cerebral artery anastomosis was performed and occlusion of the left ICA using detachable balloons was carried out a day later. TIAs corresponding to the territory fed by the anastomosed STA occurred nine times two to four days and five times eight to nine days after the ICA occlusion without new infarction on computed tomography (CT) scan. Single-photon emission computed tomography showed no hypoperfusion immediately after the initial TIA. CT scan revealed thrombosis of half of the aneurysm a day after the ICA occlusion. The patient developed the same TIA as previously by compression of the left anastomosed STA at the time of follow-up angiography which was carried out eight days after the occlusion. Although heparin was continuously administered after the ICA occlusion for two days, the initial TIA occurred during heparinization. Anticoagulation seemed to be inadequate judging from activated coagulation time and incomplete thrombosis of the aneurysm occurred during heparinization. It is likely that the TIAs are caused by embolism via the STA, which is a rare ischaemic complication.

Notes: Summary Cerebral haemodynamic changes in 17 patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), who showed hypoperfusion on single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) before endovascular treatment, were studied after embolization. Nine of them had non-haemorrhagic clinical manifestations and the other eight had a history of intracranial haemorrhage. Obliteration of AVMs was nearly total in six patients and partial in eleven. New low density lesions on X-ray computed tomography (CT) developed in 3 of 6 patients after nearly total obliteration and one of 11 patients after partial obliteration. The first SPECT after embolization showed diminished hypoperfusion in 11 of 13 patients without new low density lesions and one of 4 patients with new low density lesions. Diminution of hypoperfusion was seen even in two patients who underwent SPECT study immediately after the embolization. Cerebral circulation was improved in five of eight patients with low density lesions before embolization and in nine of eleven patients after partial obliteration. Hypoperfused state in the haemorrhagic group tended to remain unchanged compared with that in the non-haemorrhagic group. The hypoperfused area was expanded after embolization in three patients with new cerebral infarction. It is important for improvement of cerebral circulation to reduce the shunt flow without causing new infarction due to the embolization itself. In one of two patients who had a hyperperfused area surrounding the AVM after embolization, an unexpected and abnormal degree of brain swelling and haemorrhage occurred at the end of the surgery 20 days after the embolization. In the other patient, total extirpation was successfully performed after confirming disappearance of hyperperfusion in the follow-up SPECT. SPECT allows repeated measurement of the cerebral blood flow pattern easily and safely, and is useful for AVM management.

Notes: In a hydrogen-doped metallic glass, there appear low-temperature and high-temperatureinternal friction peaks respectively associated with a point-defect relaxation and the crystallization. The high-temperature-side slope of low-temperature peak and also the low-temperature-side slopeof high-temperature peak enhance the background internal friction near the room temperature. Ahydrogen-doped Mg-base metallic glass was proposed as a high-damping material to be used nearand somewhat above the room temperature. Stability of the high damping was also checked

Notes: Effects of hydrogen doping on the internal friction (IF) of ternary Ti50Ni50-xCux (x=15, 20,25)[removed info] shape memory alloys, prepared by rolling and annealing laminating Ti and Ni-Cu alloy sheets, have been measured with a damping mechanical analyzer in a forced bending oscillation mode attemperatures from 173K to 423K at three frequencies, 0.1, 1 and 5Hz. The effects of hydrogendoping on IF are common to the three alloys: a hydrogen IF peak appears at around 260K; the IFpeak value (tanφ) increases rapidly with increasing hydrogen concentration up to tanφ=0.03 at0.5at% and then decreases; the peak temperature also increases rapidly and then gradually decreases. From the frequency dependence of the peak temperature, the activation energy E and thepre-exponential factor ω0 have been analyzed to be E=0.6-0.7eV and ω0=1013-14s-1. The origin of thehydrogen IF is interpreted to be the Snoek-Koester effect due to interaction of twin boundarydislocations and segregated hydrogen atoms. Effects of hydrogen on mechanical properties of thealloys have also been studied

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Molte proprietà ottiche e di trasporto sono state studiate sui cristalli singoli di tipon di CuIn5S8.
Notes: Summary Several transport and optical properties have been studied onn-type CuIn5S8 single crystals. The energy gap at 0 K was determined from the electrical measurements to be 1.4 eV. An anisotropy of the magnetoresistance effect was found and it was suggested that the minima of the conduction band were located at points along the [100] directions ink-space. An optical-absorption band was found in an infrared region of (1÷1.6) μm and was attributed to the transitions from the lowest conduction band situated along the [100] directions to an upper conduction band.
