    Notes: Abstract The electrical degradation phenomena of zinc oxide-based varistors were studied using a high-energy current pulse and a.c. polarization at different temperatures. Activation energy measurements during the degradation process showed that these phenomena are associated with diffusion and that the diffusion-controlling species are slower than Zn., For degradation promoted by current pulses of 8×20 μs, the Schottky potential barrier deformation was measured. A decrease in height and width of the potential barrier due to the reduction of surface states density,N s, without a significant change in donor density,N d, was observed. To explain these results, a modification of the unstable components model is proposed for the potential barrier in which the degradation is due to oxi-reduction reactions between atomic defects. These reactions promote the elimination of zinc vacancies and/or adsorbed oxygen on the grain boundaries.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of heating rate on the sintering of agglomerated NaNbO3 powders, processed by the polymeric precursors method, was studied. The results showed that the presence of agglomerated powder leads to a heterogeneous microstructure, with bimodal grain size distribution, after sintering. Using a high heating rate, the sintering of agglomerated particles was inhibits, leading to a homogeneous microstructure, with single grain size distribution.

    Notes: Abstract Using the Rietveld method, phases of ceria-doped zirconia, calcined at temperatures of 600 and 900 °C, were quantitatively analysed for different concentrations of ceria. The results show that the stabilization of zirconia depends on the dopant concentration and calcination temperature. Moreover, the theoretical calculation using the ab initio Hartree–Fock–Roothaan method indicates that the most stable phases for ceria-stabilized zirconia are cubic or tetragonal, in accordance with experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract SrTiO3 thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method and deposited by spin-coating onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. The spin-coated films heat treated at 700°C were crack-free, dense, and homogeneous. Microstructural and morphological evaluations were followed by grazing incident X-ray, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Dielectric studies indicated a dielectric constant of about 475, which is higher than that of ceramic SrTiO3, and a factor dissipation of about 0.050 at 100 kHz. SrTiO3 thin films were found to have paraelectric properties with C-V characteristics.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of Ta2O5 doping in 0.99SnO2·0.01CoO on the microstructure and electrical properties of this ceramic were analyzed in this study. The grain size was found to decrease from 6.87 μm to 5.68 μm when the Ta2O5 concentration increased from 0.050 to 0.075 mol%. DC electrical characterization showed a dramatic increase in the current loss and decrease in the non-linear coefficient with the increase of the Ta2O5 concentration. The conduction mechanism is by thermionic emission and the potential barriers are of Schottky type, separated by a thin film.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental and theoretical study on the piezoelectric behaviour of PZT doped with a range of calcium ion concentrations is presented. A systematic study of the effect on the piezoelectric properties of PZT doped with various concentrations of CaO at constant sintering temperature and sintering time was carried out. The remanent polarization, planar coupling factor and frequency–thickness constant increase with calcium concentration. Ab initio perturbed ion calculations show that the lattice energy decreases with calcium addition for both tetragonal and rhombohedral phases of PZT.
