Notes: Summary In the ganglion paracervicale uteri of the rat, there are principle neurons which are able to take up offered catecholamines. Normally there is an inverse relationship between their size and their mean catecholamine-fluorescence. A comparison with the catecholamine-fluorescence of depleted and repleted adrenergic perikarya in the ganglion cervicale superius is made.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The numerical solution of a nonlinear operator equation arises the question of finding suitable initial solutions. For general classes of problems the method of “continuation” (“Einbettung”) gives a systematical means to construct such starting values. The given problemT(x)=θ is inbedded in a family of ProblemsT(s, x)=θ wheres∈[0,1]. These problems should have a simple solution fors=0; fors=1T(s, x)=θ must represent the original problem. The solution of the family has to depend continously on the parameters. Starting withs=0 one constructs succesively the solutions fors 1〈s 2...〈s n=1.x (s i-1) is used as an inital value for the evaluation ofx(s i). This method is used to solve a special class of integro-differential equations with Urysonoperator. Hereby, the problem of bifurcation is discussed, too. Under the conditions of Banach's fixed point theorem one can show that Newton's iterative method converges stepwise. Without using steps this is not true in general. For one dimensional problems sharp estimations for existence and uniqueness are established. For certain discretisations there exists an asymptotic development of the discreticized solution.

Notes: Summary A 33 year old woman presented with dyspnea and dizziness. These symptoms had recurred several times during the months preceding. At initial investigation we palpated a tumor in the upper abdomen corresponding to the sonographic finding of a 10 × 10 cm sized cystic tumor in the liver. Because of reduction of fibrinogen, prolonged thrombin time and thrombocytopenia a malignant disease involving the liver and producing pulmonary embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation was suspected. However, during routine echocardiography a right atrial mass prolapsing in the right ventricle was detected. After normalization of fibrinogen and thrombin-time following a low dose heparin therapy a myxoma sized 6 × 5 cm was removed from the right atrium. The patient did not recover and died 20 days following surgery. At autopsy the liver tumor proved to be a benign cholangioendothelial cyst.

Notes: Summary This study describes the course of medical drug consumption (analgesics, tranquilizers, and hypnotics) in 843 identical, healthy men between the ages of 20 and 33 years. In 1972–1973, 4082 randomly selected 20-year-old Swiss military recruits were interviewed with a standardized questionnaire about parental drug consumption and their own consumption of tobacco, alcohol, analgesics, tranquilizers, hypnotics, and illegal drugs. In 1979, 1658 and, in 1985, 1554 men from the original sample were asked identical and similar questions via questionnaires sent by mail. The results presented concern the 843 men who took part in all three phases. The medical drugs these men consumed most often were analgesics. However, there was a significant decrease in the number of men who took these drugs either seldom or repeatedly during the observation period (28.6% vs 21.0%;P 〈 0.001). There was also a significant decrease in the proportion of men who used tranquilizers (8.7% vs 4.9%;P 〈 0.01); however, the proportions of men taking hypnotics were the same in 1972–1973 and in 1985 (5.4% vs 5.2%). In the study population, repeated consumption of analgesics and/or hypnotics and/or tranquilizers at the age of 20 significantly increased the probability that the subjects would habitually consume analgesics at the age of 33. Repeated parental consumption of hypnotics increased the probability that the sons would significantly increase their consumption of hypnotics and/or tranquilizers between the ages of 20 and 33. The results are discussed against the background of other findings concerning the epidemiology of drug consumption.

Notes: Summary It is a pleasure to read this book. The state of art for Newton-type methods is given. It is strongly recommended also for teaching purposes. Numerical analysis is presented in an optimal way including both theory and computational aspects.
