    Notes: A growth trial was conducted to feed juvenile tilapia (initial weight, 9.1±0.1 g), Oreochromis niloticus×O. aureus, isonitrogenous diets for 8 weeks. Six diets were formulated containing 29% crude protein from casein and gelatin, 10% crude fat from soybean oil and refined soybean lecithin and varying levels of corn starch ranging from 6% to 46% at increments of 8%, with corresponding energy to protein (E/P) ratios of 35.6, 37.9, 40.2, 42.5, 44.8 and 47.1 kJ g−1. Weight gain (WG), specific growth rate, feed efficiency ratio and protein efficiency ratio were significantly higher in fish fed diets with starch ≥22% (or E/P ratio ≥40.2 kJ g−1) than in fish fed diets with 6% or 14% starch (or E/P ratio of 35.6 or 37.9 kJ g−1). No further improvement was measured when dietary starch content increased beyond 22%. Body protein retention showed the same general pattern as WG, and was highest in fish fed the 22% starch diet. Body composition was significantly affected by dietary starch level. Fish fed diets with starch ≥30% had significantly higher lipid content than fish fed diets with 6% or 14% starch. Ash content was negatively correlated with starch inclusion level, but moisture and protein contents did not show discernible trends among treatments. Results indicate that hybrid tilapia can utilize 46% dietary starch without growth retardation, while 22% starch in feed for juvenile tilapia containing 29% protein and 10% lipid, or an E/P ratio of 37.9 kJ g−1 is optimal.

    Notes: Staphylococcus epidermidis strains are diverse in their pathogenicity; some are invasive and cause serious nosocomial infections, whereas others are non-pathogenic commensal organisms. To analyse the implications of different virulence factors in Staphylococcus epidermidis infections, the complete genome of Staphylococcus epidermidis strain ATCC 12228, a non-biofilm forming, non-infection associated strain used for detection of residual antibiotics in food products, was sequenced. This strain showed low virulence by mouse and rat experimental infections. The genome consists of a single 2499 279 bp chromosome and six plasmids. The chromosomal G + C content is 32.1% and 2419 protein coding sequences (CDS) are predicted, among which 230 are putative novel genes. Compared to the virulence factors in Staphylococcus aureus, aside from δ-haemolysin and β-haemolysin, other toxin genes were not found. In contrast, the majority of adhesin genes are intact in ATCC 12228. Most strikingly, the ica operon coding for the enzymes synthesizing interbacterial cellular polysaccharide is missing in ATCC 12228 and rearrangements of adjacent genes are shown. No mec genes, IS256, IS257, were found in ATCC 12228. It is suggested that the absence of the ica operon is a genetic marker in commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis strains which are less likely to become invasive.

    Notes: Purpose - This purpose of this paper is to propose a recommendation approach for information retrieval. Design/methodology/approach - Relevant results are presented on the basis of a novel data structure named FPT-tree, which is used to get common interests. Then, data is trained by using a partial back-propagation neural network. The learning is guided by users' click behaviors. Findings - Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the approach. Originality/value - The approach attempts to integrate metric of interests (e.g., click behavior, ranking) into the strategy of the recommendation system. Relevant results are first presented on the basis of a novel data structure named FPT-tree, and then, those results are trained through a partial back-propagation neural network. The learning is guided by users' click behaviors.

    Notes: Researchers widely argue that the most significant difference between family controlled and non-family business concerns the way in which executive succession occurs, and more specifically, unique aspects of the process of intergenerational family business transfer. The importance of this study is acknowledged by the fact that it offers researchers and practitioners empirical evidence that links succession issues and the state of performance in UK-based small- and medium-sized family businesses. The article commences with a review of the conceptual framework that relates to the critical factors influencing the succession process, followed by an introduction of the methodology. Then the article proceeds with a detailed statistical analysis based on a stratified randomly selected sample (169 small- and medium-sized family controlled businesses). In summary, the article concludes with a set of tentative recommendations. It is anticipated that this study will enable a deep debate of the issues surrounding the succession practice and raise a wide awareness of the critical factors shaping the ownership transition.

    Notes: The successful application of robots in surgery and other medical fields prompts us that robots can also play an important role in oral restoration. The traditional way of complete denture manufacturing is manual and only high-level dentists and skilled technicians can do this work well. But we believe that a robot can do this work better and more easily. Artificial teeth are very complicated in shape, and not easy to be grasped and manipulated accurately by a robot gripper. Aiming at improving our previous robot manufacturing system of complete dentures, we present a new method to perform teeth implanting. We improve the previous manufacturing procedure by adding several components in the operating process. By this method, the robot gripper only needs to grasp and implant intermediate blocks, which have very simple shapes and are easy to handle precisely. The 3D human-machine tooth arrangement software performs the calculation of intermediate blocks' positions and orientations. We perform the experiment of tooth arrangement for a patient, and obtain a pair of ideal tooth arches. A complete denture can be manufactured according to this result.

    Notes: NiO nanoparticle-coated lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powders are successfully fabricated by the heterogeneous precipitation method using PZT, Ni(NO3)2·6H2O, and NH4HCO3 as the starting materials. The amorphous NiCO3·2Ni(OH)2·2H2O are uniformly coated on the surface of PZT particles. XRD analysis and the selected-area diffraction (SAD) pattern indicate that the amorphous coating layer is crystallized to NiO after being calcined at 400°C for 2 h. TEM images show that the NiO particles of ∼8 nm are spherical and weakly agglomerated. The thickness of the nanocrystalline NiO coating layer on the surface of PZT particle is ∼30 nm.

    Notes: Resistance degradation of lead magnesium niobate-based (PMZNT) ceramics during nickel electroplating was investigated using resistivity measurement and auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analysis. It was found that the resistivity of the ceramics remained nearly unchanged at the initial stage of the electroplating, and, as electroplating time increased, the resistivity decreased rapidly. An AES depth profile analysis of a degraded specimen showed oxygen content in the surface to be lower than the theoretical value, and the relationship of oxygen content and detection depth was obtained. The results indicated that Pb2+ and Nb5+ were reduced to lower valence states and oxygen in the lattice was lost, thereby leading to a generation of oxygen vacancies. Hence, the conductivity of the dielectrics was enhanced. The results also indicated that only the outermost surface had suffered the reducing effect induced by hydrogen generated during nickel electroplating, whereas the bulk material remained impervious.

    Notes: Pure-perovskite 0.64Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.36PbTiO3 (PNN–PT) powder has been successfully synthesized by only one-step calcination using a coating method. SEM photograph shows that PNN–PT powder with the size of 2–4 μm is cubic and well dispersed. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, solid-state reactions in the process of calcination in PbO–Nb2O5–TiO2–NiO system are investigated. In comparison with conventional solid state method, the single-calcination synthesis mechanism of pyrochlore-free lead-based niobate ferroelectrics using a coating method is tentatively proposed. A typical coating structure of Ni precipitate-coated Nb2O5 powder facilitates the formation of perovskite PNN–PT phase at a relatively low calcination temperature, resulting in the successful synthesis of pyrochlore-free PNN–PT powder in one-step calcination at 900°C.
