Notes: We have measured and modeled the dynamics of inductively coupled discrete arrays of niobium Josephson junctions. We see splitting of the Eck step in the current-voltage characteristic. Numerical simulations reproduce this splitting and are used to find an approximate solution for the junction phases at resonance. Using the technique of harmonic balance, we find an analytic expression for the resonance frequencies and the voltages that match this splitting. We can also predict the amplitude of these oscillations. The analytical results describe both the experiments and simulations well. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We propose a model of the human circadian system. The sleep-wake and body temperature rhythms are assumed to be driven by a pair of coupled nonlinear oscillators described by phase variables alone. The novel aspect of the model is that its equations may be solved analytically. Computer simulations are used to test the model against sleep-wake data pooled from 15 studies of subjects living for weeks in unscheduled, time-free environments. On these tests the model performs about as well as the existing models, although its mathematical structure is far simpler.

Notes: [Auszug] WE ALL have clocks inside of us. These internal oscillators control the daily cycles of body temperature, sleep and wakeful-ness, hormone titre, metabolism and so on. Chronobiology is the study of such biological rhythms and the endogenous clocks which generate them. Although physiological ...

Notes: [Auszug] Anyone who has ever taken a shower in an old dormitory knows that time delays can cause oscillatory instabilities. First the water is too cold, so you turn up the heat. But as you stand there shivering, the water does not get any hotter, because of delays in the antiquated heating system. If you ...
