    Notizen: Wheat starch was hydrolyzed using microwave energy. Starch suspensions (10%) acidified with hydrochloric acid to pH 1.85 were heated at 0.18 milliamperes microwave. energy in sealed glass tubes for various times. Liquefying and coloring were the most obvious visible changes during hydrolysis. With extended heating times, temperature, pressure, and total acidity increased causing darker hydrolyzates and charred residue formation. Paper chromatography showed sugars ranging from G1 to G5. Starch hydrolysates had total sugars, reducing sugars, and glucose as high as 94.81, 88.69, and 83.56%, respectively, based on original starch. Sugar syrups of high dextrose equivalent can be produced within a short time by using microwave energy.

    Notizen: A case of T cell prolymphocytic leukaemia of helper/inducer T cell phenotype with IgM hypergammaglobulinaemia in a 65-year-old Saudi man is presented. The neoplastic T cells in the patient had an OKT3+, OKT4+, OKT8−, OKT11+, OKCLL+, OKIa1+, OKDR+, Tac+ phenotype. The presence of OKIa1+, OKDR+, and Tac+ antigens indicates that the leukaemic T cells were in an activated state. The cells responded to phytohaemagglutinin, but showed a diminished response to concanavalin A. The reduced interleukin 2 receptor expression and interleukin 2 production were associated with defective concanavalin A-induced proliferation. There was suppression of mixed lymphocyte culture reaction between the patient and two healthy donors in response to concanavalin A. In vitro immunoglobulin production experiments demonstrate that the leukaemic T cells provided an enhanced helper cell function to produce IgM, and suppressor cell function to produce IgG immunoglobulins by pokeweed mitogen-induced normal B lymphocyte differentiation. In this study we also found that the patient's T cells proliferate in response to lipopolysaccharides, thus providing the first evidence that leukaemic (OKT4+) T cells from a prolymphocytic leukaemia patient can be stimulated by lipopolysaccharides.

    Notizen: Abstract Circumumbilical pyloromyotomy has been used widely to offer an optimum cosmetic approach. On occasion, there are difficulties in delivering the large pyloric tumour through a relatively small incision. The authors prospectively collected a series of 39 consecutive pyloromyotomies performed over a period of 3 years in three teaching hospitals. Patients were aged 13 to 90 days (average 35) and the male-female ratio was 5:1. The initial operative approach was a right upper quadrant (RUQ) incision (n=6) and later a circumumbilical incision (CUI), with or without lateral extension, combined with transverse division of the linea alba and part of both rectus muscles (n=33). Two infants (1 RUQ and 1 CUI) developed wound infections, which were treated with antibiotics. There were no other peri- or postoperative complications. It was necessary to extend the incision in one-third of CUI cases (n=12) in order to facilitate the delivery of a large pyloric tumour through the incision. Both omega-shaped (n=3) and a new modified extension (n=9) have been used with good cosmetic results.

    Notizen: Abstract Between 1974 and 1994, 25 colonic interposition procedures were performed for esophageal replacement in 23 cases of esophageal atresia (EA) and 2 corrosive strictures. Nine patients had one-stage and 16 had two-stage reconstructions. The transthoracic route was used in 16 cases (64%) and the retrosternal route in 9 (36%). Average age at the time of operation in EA patients was 17 months (range 12–33), and the children with corrosive injuries were 3 and 6 years old. Mean age at follow-up was 11.8 years (2.3–20.5 years). There was no mortality in the series. One patient developed full-graft necrosis and had a gastric pull-up procedure later. One child had partial graft necrosis (3 cm at the cervical end), however, enough colon was available for reconstruction. Ten patients developed a leak from the cervical anastomosis (40%) and 7 developed a stricture at the cervical esophago-colonic anastomosis (28%). The strictures were treated by repeated esophageal dilatation, and 3 patients required revision of the anastomosis (12%). Other complications included acid reflux in 2 cases (8%), small-intestinal obstruction in 1 (4%), redundancy of the colon in 1 (4%), and chest infections in 2 (8%). Follow-up included assessment of the patient's symptoms, serial growth measurements (height and weight), and where relevant, endoscopy and a contrast swallow or meal. There was a 52% improvement in weight and height percentiles post-operatively. Each of the 19 patients who had barium swallows showed rapid transit and emptying without any significant delay or hold-up. Overall long-term results were excellent in 13 patients (52%), good in 7 (28%), and fair in 5 (20%). The colon conduit thus provides an excellent substitute esophagus in pediatric patients.

    Notizen: Abstract A study of charged charm production is made at 400 GeV incident energy of protons in nuclear emulsion. A total of 7005 primary stars have been scrutinized to look for charm particle decays in the forward cone within a decay distance of 100–1,000 μm (3,056 stars) and 100–2,000 μm (3,949 stars). In all 10 charm candidates decaying to 3 charged particles plus neutrals have been observed. Background due to secondary interactions for events of such topology is estimated to be ≈3. Background due to strange particle decays is estimated to be negligible. The rest of the events are attributed toΛ c + andD ± decays. This leads to a value of 91±35 μb/nucleon for the total charged charm production cross section. Using production cross section forD ± from other experiments we obtainΛ c + production cross section as 62±27 μb/nucleon. Two cases of pair production of charm have been seen.
