Notes: Patients sensitive to bee stings had immediate weal-and-flare (WF) and painful late reactions when skin tested with purified melittin, the main toxin of bee venom. The WF reactions were immunologically non-specific, as melittin is a potent histamine-releasing agent. The late reactions which persisted after 4–5 hr appeared to result from immunological hypersensitivity to bee stings since normal patients had no late reactions. Reaginic and precipitable antibodies against melittin were not found in the sera from any of the bee sting sensitive patients. Cellular hypersensitivity against melittin was not detected by the leucocyte migration inhibition test. The haemolytic and leucocyte migration inhibition activities of melittin were associated with the intact molecule and not the carboxy-terminal heptapeptide.

Notes: [Auszug] IT is well known that the principal metals which show the phenomena of passivity are chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel. These elements have this in common that they form divalent ions, and that while possessing electrons, on Bohr's theory, in the 4th-quantum orbit, their 3rd-quantum ...

Notes: [Auszug] AT present the most likely view of the origin of the actinium series is that uranium II undergoes a dual change in which about 96 per cent, of atoms form ionium and the radium series, and the remainder form uranium Y, the product of which, proto-actinium, is the parent of the actinium series. ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a paper shortly to be published in The Philosophical Magazine, one of us has shown that when the α rays from radium C impinge upon matter, they excite a small but detectable amount of γ radiation. In continuation of this work a systematic investigation of the radiations from bodies which ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE experiments on the transformation of mercury into gold (A. Miethe and H. Stammreich, H. Nagaoka) and the suggested explanation of the process (F. Soddy) lead me to make the following observations. The possibility of the transformation of a nucleus into that of the element next below it by ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT was suggested by the writer in 1912 that the end-products of the uranium and thorium disintegration series should differ in atomic weight from that of common lead, which chemically they closely resemble. As the atomic weights of these products, determined experimentally later by Richards and ...

Notes: [Auszug] SOME years ago, Prof. Joly (Proc. Roy. Soc., A, 102, 682; 1923) discovered radioactive haloes which could not be ascribed to any known radioactive product. One class, not unlike thorium haloes, he called X-haloes; asecond class, of radii less than those of other haloes, he called ...
