    Notizen: We investigated the influence of the presence of oxygen during the deposition of the calcium cathode on the structure and on the performance of polymeric light emitting diodes (pLEDs). The oxygen background pressure during deposition of the calcium cathode of polymeric LEDs was varied. Subsequently, the oxygen depth distribution was measured and correlated with the performance of the pLEDs. The devices have been fabricated in a recently built ultraclean setup. The polymer layers of the pLEDs have been spincoated in a dry nitrogen atmosphere and transported directly into an ultrahigh vacuum chamber where the metal electrodes have been deposited by evaporation. We used indium–tin–oxide as anode, OC1C10 PPV as electroluminescent polymer, calcium as cathode, and aluminum as protecting layer. We achieved reproducibility of about 15% in current and brightness for devices fabricated in an oxygen atmosphere of (very-much-less-than)10−9 mbar. For further investigations the calcium deposition was carried out in an oxygen atmosphere from 10−8 to 10−5 mbar. We determined the amount of oxygen in the different layers of the current–voltage-light characterized pLEDs with elastic recoil detection analysis and correlated it with the characteristics of the devices. The external efficiency of the pLEDs decreases continuously with increasing oxygen pressure, the current shows a pronounced minimum. The brightness mostly decreases with increasing oxygen with an indication of a slight minimum. PLEDs with completely oxidized calcium are not operational. The first contact of the pLEDs with the dry glove box environment leads to an immediate reduction of current and brightness which is caused by the cooling of the devices by several degrees. Determining reproducible characteristics of pLEDs in the vacuum requires the measurement of their temperature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A new compact substrate heater for the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique has been developed. The heater is built up of a radiation part, consisting of two quartz halogen lamps, and a rotating absorber, made of a SiC disk, to which the substrate is attached. The advantage of this system in comparison to conventional heaters is its suitability for substrate temperatures up to 800 °C in any ambient (vacuum as well as corrosive gases). The heater is applied for the deposition of thin, multielement films with improved thickness uniformity using off-axis PLD. This technique makes use of a rotating substrate which is off-centered from the depositing plasma plume. The thickness profile is modeled using predetermined stationary thickness distributions. For a variety of multielement materials good experimental uniformities in terms of thickness (in close agreement with the calculations) and of chemical composition are obtained. A relation is found between the value of experimental parameters and the achievable uniformity area within a large pressure range. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We present a case of inflammatory epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) with IgA antibodies to plectin. Analysis of lesional skin biopsies by electron microscopy revealed the split level to be in the sublamina densa zone, corresponding to the diagnosis of EBA. Direct immunofluorescence of perilesional skin demonstrated u-serrated depositions of IgG and IgA that under immunoelectron microcopy were shown to be located in the sublamina densa. In contrast, indirect immunofluorescence on salt-split skin revealed circulating IgA antibodies that stained the roof rather than the floor of the blister. Immunoblotting showed these serum antibodies to be directed to the cytoplasmic hemidesmosomal antigen plectin. The antiplectin specificity of these antibodies was confirmed by ‘knockout’ immunofluorescence analysis; the serum IgA did not bind to skin sections of a patient with plectin-deficient epidermolysis bullosa. To our knowledge, this case demonstrates for the first time the existence of IgA antibodies against plectin.

    Notizen: The podzolization process is studied through lipids in nine characteristic podzol horizons. Organic matter accumulates particularly with aluminium in the Bh horizon, while the hard, cemented Bs horizon below this is formed mainly by iron oxides. The low soil pH seems to have no great influence on the preservation of lipids as reflected by the absolute amounts present and the presence of bacterial lipid markers throughout the profile. Independent of soil pH, lipids accumulate in organically enriched horizons. Albeit, high molecular weight organic compounds accumulate to a relatively greater extent than lipids in these horizons. A lipid signal related to the aerial parts, i.e. leaves and flowers, of Calluna is observed only in the O horizon. This ‘n-alkane, steroid and triterpenoids’ signal is quickly lost in the underlying Ah horizon due to (bacterial) oxidation. The other total lipid extracts obtained are dominated by root-derived compounds. In subsoil horizons rich in organic matter, i.e. the Ahb and Bh horizons, root-derived friedooleanan and steroid compounds dominate the total lipid signal. Degraded horizons, poor in organic matter, i.e. the E2, Bhs, Bs and B/C horizons, are dominated by C22 and C24ω-hydroxy acids, long-chain (〉 C20) n-alkanoic acids with a strong even-over-odd predominance and C22 and C24n-alkanols. Steroid and root-derived triterpenoids with a friedooleanan structure have been removed from these horizons through degradation. Based on total organic carbon content and lipid composition, the formation of an E1 horizon has started, but is not yet complete. In the Ahb horizon, a contribution from buried vegetation to the total lipid signal is still present, although degradation and an input from roots have significantly altered the original signal. Overall, lipid data indicate that degradation (microbial oxidation) is an important process that should be taken into account, in addition to leaching, when describing podzolization processes in soils.

    Notizen: In the study of interfacial diffusion processes in polymer light-emitting diodes, the use of high-energy ion-scattering techniques can be of great value due to the possibility of quantitative elemental depth profiling. However, ion irradiation of polymers is known to cause various degradation effects, including the loss of hydrogen. Since the hydrogen loss determines the accuracy of depth profiling, it is an interesting subject for study in order to define experimental conditions in which the degradation is suppressed. The loss of hydrogen from porphyrins (organic solar cells) has been measured by means of elastic recoil detection analysis with 2, 4, and 7.6 MeV He+ beams. A theoretical model is proposed in which the hydrogen loss is described through the formation and recombination of free hydrogen radicals. A distinct difference is introduced between direct recombination processes and the diffusion of radicals out of the ion track. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The current density–voltage characteristics of poly(dialkoxy p-phenylene vinylene) based polymer are investigated as a function of temperature. Model calculations show that the differences between single and double carrier devices can be well understood by taking into account a bimolecular recombination process. It is found that the bimolecular recombination is thermally activated with an identical activation energy as measured for the charge carrier mobility. This demonstrates that the recombination process is of the Langevin type, and explains why the conversion efficiency (photon/carrier) of a polymer light-emitting diode is temperature independent. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The transport properties of electrons and holes in poly(dialkoxy-p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) are investigated by current–voltage measurements using Ca as an electron and indium-tin-oxide as a hole injecting contact. Both the electron and hole currents are dominated by the bulk conduction properties of the PPV, in contrast to previous reports. The hole current is governed by bulk space-charge limited conductivity and a hole mobility of 0.5×10−6 cm2/V s is determined. The electron current is strongly reduced by the presence of traps with a total density of 1018 cm−3. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A cause for degradation of polymer light-emitting diodes is the oxidation of the polymer by oxygen diffusing out of the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) anode. This problem can be solved by the introduction of an organic hole-injecting film, poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS), between the ITO and the emissive polymer. Indeed, a dramatic improvement of the lifetime and also the luminous efficiency has been observed. However, our Rutherford backscattering (RBS) studies show that the ITO/PEDOT:PSS interface is not stable. In as prepared glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS samples 0.02 at. % indium was found in the PEDOT:PSS film. Annealing in a nitrogen atmosphere at 100 °C during 2500 h increased the indium concentration to 0.2 at. %. Upon exposure to air much faster degradation of the ITO/PEDOT:PSS interface was observed; after several days in air the amount of indium reached a saturation concentration of 1.2 at. %. The degradation of the interface can be explained by etching of the ITO due to the strong acidic nature of PEDOT:PSS. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The magnetic domain structure of amorphous ferromagnets with nonzero magnetostriction is mainly determined by the internal stress state because of the magneto-elastic coupling. The stress and field dependence of the domain structure contains important information on the internal stresses in the material. The three-dimensional neutron depolarization technique has been used to study the stress- and field-dependence of the bulk domain structures in both as-quenched and annealed ribbons of the metallic glass Fe40Ni40B20. A three-layer domain structure model corresponding to compressive and tensile internal stresses is presented to explain the measured data. The influence of surface roughness on the interpretation of neutron depolarization measurements in amorphous ribbons is discussed. Finally, the internal stress relaxation due to the annealing is explained in terms of the viscous behaviour of the glass. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
