Notizen: Abstract This double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined the clinical efficacy and tolerance of human leukocyte interferon-α (2 × 106 IU/g) in hydrophilic cream to cure patients afflicted with first episodes of genital herpes. Sixty patients aged 18–40 years (mean 24.5) with culture-confirmed herpes simplex genitalis, bearing 755 lesions (mean 12.6) were randomized to active and placebo groups. Patients joined the study within 7 days (mean 4.1) of the manifestation of lesions. Each patient was given a preceded 40-g tube containing placebo/active preparation with instructions on self-application of the trial medication to their lesions three times daily for 5 consecutive days (max. 15 topical applications per week). Patients were examined three times a week to evaluate clinical efficacy and other beneficial effects. A reepithelialized lesion with some residual erythema was recorded as healed. Patients resolved during the active treatment period (1–4 weeks) were spared further therapy and were requested to visit us as scheduled for posttreatment control after 16 weeks. From the remaining patients empty tubes were collected, and similarly coded replacement tubes were given to continue the treatment (in total 160 tubes were used). Patients treated with leukocyte interferon-α cream had significantly shorter mean duration of viral shedding/healing than placebo recipients, (6.2 days vs. 15 days; P 〈 0.01);thus the number of healed patients was 25/30 (83.3%) vs. 5/30 (17%); P 〈0.001. Of the 60 patients 49 (81.6%) complained no drug-related side effects. Transitory increase in body temperature (〉38°C) accompanied by mild headache, malaise, and myalgia were experienced by 11 (18.3%) patients; however, treatment was well tolerated by all the patients, and there were no dropouts. After 16 weeks only the cured patients were monitored on a monthly basis up to 20 months. Three (10%) cured patients showed recurrence after 22 months. In conclusion, the clinical results demonstrated that human leukocyte interferon-a (2 × 106 IU/g) in hydrophilic cream is more efficacious than placebo, and further support the adequacy of leukocyte interferon-α therapy as an effective and reliable treatment to cure first-episode genital herpes in women.

Notizen: Abstract The purpose of this double-blind, placebo-controlled, comparative study was to evaluate the specific clinical efficacy and tolerance of human leukocyte interferon-α (2×l06 IU/g) and podophyllotoxin 0.5% incorporated in a hydrophilic cream to cure genital warts. Preselected Asian women (n=60) aged 18–40 years (mean 22.9), with a clinical and biopsy-confirmed diagnosis of genital warts, harboring 322 lesions (mean 5.36) were randomly assigned to three parallel groups to receive one of the two test drugs or placebo. Each patient received a preceded tube (40 g) containing either human leukocyte interferon-α, podophyllotoxin, or identically appearing placebo cream for 3 days' usage. In addition to written instructions, each subject was shown how to apply a minimal amount of trial medication on their lesions thrice daily for 3 consecutive days per week (maximum nine topical applications per week). Patients were examined on a weekly basis, and a cure was considered to be a biopsy-confirmed, total elimination of a lesion. Moreover, patients cured during the study period were spared further therapy, and were requested to return in 16 weeks to monitor for the occurrence of a relapse. The remaining patients' empty tubes were collected, and similarly precoded replacement tubes were given to continue the treatment; a total of 214 tubes were used. The study was scheduled for 16 weeks with 4 weeks of active treatment. Individuals were excluded from the study due to pregnancy, breast feeding, or the receiving of any type of antiviral therapy during the 4 weeks preceding enrollment. Better results were obtained with leukocyte interferon-α cream than with podophyllotoxin both in terms of the number of cured patients (18/20 vs. 12/20, or 90% vs. 60%; P〈0.0285) and the number of eliminated lesions (105/110) vs. 87/108, or 95.5% vs. 80.5%; P〈0.001. In the placebo group 4/20 (20%) patients were cured, indicating lower results. Out of the 60 patients 51 (85%) complained of no drug-related symptomatic side effects. However, the most frequent nonobjective adverse symptoms experienced by the patients were mild tenderness 4/60 (6.6%), burning sensation 3/60 (5%), and transitory increase in body temperature (〉38°C) accompanied by headache and itching 2/60 (3.3%). None of the patients suffering from these side effects elected to discontinue the study. The patients were evaluated for 1 year after the initial visit, and among the 34/60 (56.6%) cured patients two had a relapse after 9 months. In conclusion, the clinical results of this study demonstrate that leukocyte interferon-α (2×l06 IU/g) is more efficacious than 0.5% podophyllotoxin and placebo in hydrophilic cream, and substantiates that along with mild, nonobjective, transient, localized, adverse symptoms, human leukocyte α-interferon therapy is more effective and better than podophyllotoxin in cream for curing genital warts in women

Notizen: A computer simulation of stripe deterioration under electromigration is developed with especial regard to the physical aspects of the process. A grain-boundary network is first established appropriate to a {111} grain-boundary texture by a Voronoi process. Stress relief through the motion of network vertices can be used to simulate the effects of annealing. In operation, two different situations are considered: (1) free-surface condition and (2) operation under a passivating surface containment. With the free-surface condition, voids grow internally while the extra material spreads over the surface. With the passivating condition, the matter is conserved and eventually a steady state ensues. The possibility of sideways extrusions or "spikes'' is considered. Many other possible applications of the model are indicated.

Notizen: X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy results of the system FeAl1−xNbx show that the cubic (CsCl) FeAl phase dominates for small values of x, and persists as x increases, but also, the hexagonal (C14) Fe2Nb phase develops. The values of the lattice constants and Mössbauer hyperfine parameters indicate that both phases contain impurities, i.e., the phases are FeAl(Nb) and Fe2Nb(Al). The Debye temperature aitch-thetaD for the FeAl phase is derived from the intensity analysis of the diffraction lines and a value of (385±5) K is obtained. This is nearly equal to the Debye temperatures for alloys of Fe and Nb. This result is also supported by the fact that the relative Mössbauer absorption intensities corresponding to the two phases remain constant as the temperature is lowered down to 85 K. The absence of magnetic hyperfine splittings in Mössbauer spectra indicate that both phases of the alloy system remain paramagnetic down to the LN2 temperature.

Notizen: Purpose This study was performed to investigate the effect of a carbonated beverage on the wear of human enamel and three dental ceramics: a conventional porcelain (Vitadur Alpha), a hydrothermal low-fusing ceramic (Duceram-LFC), and a machinable ceramic (Vita Mark II).Materials and Methods Tooth-against-ceramic specimens (10 per group) were tested in a wear machine under a load of 40N, at a rate of 80 cycles per minute, and for a total of 25,000 cycles. The test was performed in distilled water or with intermittent exposure to a carbonated beverage (Coca-Cola). Wear was determined by measuring the height reduction of the tooth specimens and the depth of wear track in the ceramic specimens. Results ANOVA revealed a significant difference among the groups for both enamel and ceramic wear (p 〈 .001). When tested in water. Alpha porcelain caused significantly more enamel wear and also exhibited greater wear than Duceram-LFC and Vita Mark II. However, with exposure to the carbonated beverage, the enamel wear produced by Duceram-LFC did not differ significantly from that produced by Alpha porcelain, and Vita Mark II produced the least amount of enamel wear. Overall, exposure to the carbonated beverage significantly increased the enamel wear. The wear of Duceram-LFC and Vita Mark II increased with exposure to the carbonated beverage. Conclusions It was concluded that exposure to the carbonated beverage accelerated the enamel wear and decreased the wear resistance of Duceram-LFC and Vita Mark II ceramics. Overall, Vita Mark II was shown to be the most resistant to wear and also significantly less abrasive than conventional Alpha porcelain.
