Notizen: The impact of different additives on the hydrolysis of AlN powder in aqueous suspensions at room temperature was studied. The results show that citric acid and polyacrylic acid are most effective in chemically protecting AlN against hydrolysis. The protected powder is hydrophilic, which facilitates aqueous processing, and the chemical stability is retained when basic dispersing agents are added. Based on these results, the solid loading of the aqueous slurries was maximized by utilizing bimodal particle size distributions. Combining bimodal powders with the dispersants Dolapix and citric acid, colloidally stable slurries with solid loadings in excess of 50 vol% were obtained.

Notizen: The fatigue of mechanical strain induced by electric fields was investigated for antiferroelectric Pb0.97La0.02(Zr0.77Sn0.14Ti0.09)O3 ceramics. The material shows a high resistance to fatigue owing to bipolar electric cycling up to 108 cycles. The strain hysteresis loop is still fairly symmetric, whereas the maximum field-induced strain decreases by only 30% of its initial value. The fatigued samples show a damaged microstructure with dendritic macrocracks and microcrack clouds. The fatigue is attributed to a combination of electrochemical and mechanical mechanisms.

Notizen: Lanthanum-doped lead zirconate stannate titanate ceramics were successfully compacted to full density by spark plasma sintering (SPS). SPS samples densified at 900° or 950°C exhibit nearly full density and fine grain size (about 300 nm). Compared with samples from conventional sintering (CS), SPS samples show larger permittivity accompanied by a deterioration in dielectric loss and special strain hysteresis loops similar to those of ferroelectric relaxors, with a diffuse AFE–FE phase transition and less field-induced longitudinal strain. The differences in the properties of SPS and CS materials are attributed to the variations of the resultant microstructures, especially the grain size, of the ceramics.

Notizen: Precursor-derived Si-C-N ceramics after creep testing in air were characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD analysis showed that the crept Si-C-N ceramics were covered by an α-cristobalite layer. TEM observations revealed that the precipitated nanocrystallites in the crept Si-C-N ceramics were β-SiC. Between α-cristobalite and crept Si-C-N ceramic, there was an intermediate zone in which Si2N2O nanocrystallites were distributed homogeneously. Moreover, Si2N2O nanocrystallites were often found covering the surface of nanosized gas channels in the crept Si-C-N ceramics, where no α-cristobalite phase was detected. Based on these observations, a two-step oxidation mechanism of Si-C-N ceramics during creep testing in air was proposed.

Notizen: The knowledge of the microstructural evolution during exposure to high temperatures is important to understanding the mechanisms responsible for the creep resistance of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics. This includes not only the phase transformation of the SiC grains, but also the phase transformations of the oxynitride grain-boundary phases. For this study, a series of SiC specimens were prepared with varying molar ratios of AlN-Y2O3 additives. Increased creep resistance was observed in specimens with an additive system containing a 2:3 molar ratio or 60 mol% Y2O3. A continuous oxide layer of Y2Si2O7 formed at the surface during elevated temperature testing in air. No blistering or cracking was observed in this oxide coating. Further increase of the creep resistance was achieved by a post-sintering nitrogen anneal.

Notizen: Amorphous Si-B-C-N ceramic powder samples obtained by thermolysis of boron-modified polysilazane, {B[C2H4Si(H)NH]3}n, were isothermally annealed at different temperatures (1400–1800°C) and hold times (3, 10, 30, and 100 h). A qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of the crystallization behavior of the materials was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The phase evolution was additionally followed by 11B and 29Si MAS NMR as well as by FT-IR spectroscopy in transmission and diffuse reflection (DRIFTS) modes. Bulk chemical analyses of selected samples were performed to determine changes in the chemistry/phase composition of the materials. It was observed that silicon carbide is the first phase to nucleate around 1400–1500°C, whereas silicon nitride nucleates at and above 1700°C. Crystallization accelerates with increasing annealing temperature and proceeds with increasing annealing time. Furthermore, the surface area of the powders strongly influences the thermal stability of silicon nitride and thus controls overall chemical and phase composition of the materials on thermal treatment.

Notizen: Three novel Si-C-B-N ceramic compositions, namely Si2.9B1.0C14N2.9, Si3.9B1.0C11N3.2 and Si5.3B1.0C19N3.4, were synthesized using the polymer-to-ceramic transformation of the polyorganoborosilazanes [B(C2H4Si(Ph)NH)3]n, [B(C2H4Si(CH3)NH)2–(C2H4Si(CH3)N(SiH2Ph))]n, and [B(C2H4Si(CH3)–N(SiH2Ph))3]n, where Ph is phenyl (C6H5), at 1050°C in argon. The Si-B-C-N ceramics exhibited significant stability with respect to composition and mass change in the temperature range between 1000° and 2200°C, including isothermal annealing of the samples at the final temperature for 30 min in argon. The mass loss rate at 2200°C was as low as 1.4 wt%·h−1 for Si5.3B1.0C19N3.4, 1.7 wt%·h−1 for Si2.9B1.0C14N2.9, and 2.4 wt%·h−1 for Si3.9B1.0C11N3.2. The measured amount of mass loss rate was comparable to that of pure SiC materials. As crystalline phases, β-Si3N4 and β-SiC were found exclusively in the samples annealed at 2200°C at 0.1 MPa in argon. For thermodynamic reasons, β-Si3N4 should have decomposed into the elements silicon and nitrogen at that particular temperature and gas pressure. However, the presence of β-Si3N4 in our materials indicated that carbon and boron kinetically stabilized the Si3N4-based composition.

Notizen: The phase relations within the system Tl2O3–BaO–CaO–CuO including Ag have been studied with emphasis on the high-temperature superconducting phases TlBa2Ca2Cu3O8.5 (1223 phase), Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (2223 phase), TlBa2CaCu2O6.5 (1212 phase), and Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (2212 phase) at 890°C in an oxygen atmosphere. 1223 has been found to be in equilibrium with a liquid phase that is Tl poor. 2223 and 2212 exhibit varying Tl/(Ba + Ca) ratios. The three-phase field 1223 + 2223 + 2212 has been identified. The results of this study emphasize that multiphase samples can be prepared which consist of three superconducting phases, each exhibiting a critical temperature of 100 K or above.

Notizen: Powder compositions of LaGaO3, La0.9Sr0.1GaO2.95, and La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.83Mg0.17O2.815 were prepared via a Pechini-type process that uses citric acid and ethylene glycol. The calcination behavior of the precursor powders of the above-mentioned phases was studied in the temperature range of 200°–1400°C in an air atmosphere. Characterization of the powder samples were performed using several processes, including X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectroscopy, and carbon and nitrogen analyses.
