    Notes: We have designed and tested a traveling, Michelson-type vertical wavemeter for the wavelength measurement of tunable continuous-wave lasers in the visible part of the spectrum. The interferometer has two movable corner cubes, suspending vertically from a driving setup resembling Atwood's machine. To reduce the fraction-of-fringe error, a vernier-type coincidence circuit was used. Although simple, this wavemeter has a relative precision of 3.2 parts in 109 for an overall fringe count of about 7×106.

    Notes: Fabrication of microstructures has been the subject of considerable attention in recent years. Techniques such as surface silicon micromachining and bulk silicon etch have emerged as practical methods for thin microstructures and processes such as LIGA (an acronym for the German words for lithography, electrodeposition, and molding) are being used to produce high aspect ratio structures from a limited set of electroformable metals and polymers. As microsystem technologies and application prospects continue to grow, it is of interest and much practical value to expand the material choices for LIGA-scale microstructures to ceramics and a broader class of metals. To this end, this paper investigates a new technique for the fabrication of high aspect ratio ceramic or metal microparts. This technique is based on capillary-driven microcasting and curing of an epoxy-based metallic or ceramic nanoparticulate slurry into a sacrificial plastic mold produced by microinjection molding. The cured preform is subsequently heated to remove the organic phase and to sinter the particulate ceramic or metallic phase. The fabrication process is discussed in the paper along with illustration of example microparts produced using the process. A theoretical model of the fluid flow during the microcasting process is developed and validated with experimental data from the fabrication of rectangular rib sections.

    Notes: Swimming respirometry was employed to compare inactive metabolic rate (Rr), maximum metabolic rate (Rmax), resultant aerobic scope and maximum sustainable (critical) swimming speed (Ucrit), in growth hormone transgenic (GHT) and wild-type (W) tilapia Oreochromis sp. hybrids. Although the Rr of GHT tilapia was significantly (58%) higher than their W conspecifics, there were no significant differences in their net aerobic scope because GHT tilapia exhibited a compensatory increase in Rmax that was equal to their net increase in Rr. As a consequence, the two groups had the same Ucrit. The GHT and W tilapia also exhibited the same capacity to regulate oxygen uptake during progressive hypoxia, despite the fact that the GHT fish were defending a higher demand for O2. The results indicate that ectopic expression of GH raises metabolic rate in tilapia, but the fish compensate for this metabolic load and preserve such physiological determinants of fitness as aerobic scope, swimming performance and tolerance of hypoxia.

    Notes: Pecan texture was measured by texture profile analysis (TPA) at 80% compression before and after being frozen at 6 controlled rates, to 3 minimum temperatures and thawed at 2 rates. Freezing and thawing rates had more influence than storage temperature on pecan texture. Certain TPA parameters (i.e., hardness, area 1, fracturability and slope of linear segment of force vs. deformation curve) were more affected than others by freezing and thawing rates. Freezing and thawing at high rates had the least effect on pecan texture.

    Notes: Pinto bean meals with 18, 20, and 22% moisture were extruded at 140,160 and 180°C, using screw speeds of 150,200 and 250 rpm in a single-screw laboratory extruded. Expansion index, bulk density, water absorption and solubility indices, in vitro protein digestibility, and trypsin inhibitor activity in extrudate were measured. Temperature and feed moisture influenced (p〈0.05) expansion index, bulk density, water absorption index and in vitro protein digestibility. Water solubility index was affected by temperature only. Trypsin inhibitors were inactivated completely for all conditions. Screw speed had no effect on any dependent variable. Best product was produced with 22% feed moisture at 160°C.

    Notes: Potatoes, CV. Alpha, were sorted (specific gravity), peeled, cut, and blanched at four temperatures (55—70°C) for several times (0—60 min.) before frying in vegetable oil (200°C, 4 min). Multiple puncture (raw potatoes) and single puncture and Texture Profile Analysis (TPA) of French-fries were used. Limpness angle and oil retention (Carver press) were also evaluated. Firmness and some TPA parameters (chewiness, cohesiveness) were increased (〉200%) by blanch. Limpness and oil content were reduced by treatment. Improvement of French-fries texture resulted after blanching for 30—45 min. at 60—65°C.

    Notes: The texture of pecans (Carya illinoensis) from four cuhivars (Barton, Mahan, Western and Wichita) was analyzed using sensory and instrumental methods. Sensory hardness, flexibility and crispness were rated by trained panelists. Ranking of hardness and crispness was also carried out. A Texture Analyser TAXT2 was used for 50% compression, texture profile analysis (TPA), puncture and bending. Puncture and 50% compression gave best reproducibility, least variability and agreement with sensory data. The most relevant TPA parameters were cohesiveness, elasticity and fracturabihty. Parameters from the bending test did not indicate texture of the pecans suitably.

    Notes: Permeate fluxes and rejection coefficients (total solids) were measured for five different reverse osmosis membranes used to concentrate whole and skim milks and acid and sweet wheys. Cellulose acetate and thin film composite membranes were employed in both tubular and spiral-wound configurations. Variations in permeate flux and total solids rejection coefficients in response to changes in process operating conditions (temperature, feedstock, hydrostatic pressure/flow rate) were analyzed to assess the significance of the effects of these process parameters. All data were recorded under total recycle conditions so as to maintain a constant feed composition.

    Notes: Calcium absorption in sliced carrots was evaluated by immersion in calcium chloride solution (0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 M) at 65C and 100C. Absorption kinetics were obtained for each of the experimental combinations using linear and quadratic statistical models. The apparent diffusion coefficient was estimated using Fick's second law for infinite slabs. Linear models of calcium absorption versus temperature and concentration were adequate for both 65C and 100C conditions (P ≤ 0.05). Diffusion coefficients of calcium ions into carrot tissue showed no significant increase with selected concentrations of calcium chloride. A significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in the average diffusion coefficient (0.918–2.32 × 10−9 m2/s) was observed with a rise in temperature from 65C to 100C.
