Notizen: A postal survey of 120 UK hospitals was conducted to assess the current use of filters in anaesthetic breathing systems and consultant anaesthetists' opinion of their value; 76% of the questionnaires were returned complete. The survey showed that 77.2% of anaesthetic departments use a new filter for every case, a variety of different filter types being used. A connector distal to the filter was used in 78.3% of patients, providing a possible route for cross infection. Anaesthetists rated the prevention of bacterial infection and gross contamination as being higher priorities than the prevention of viral infection. Of those surveyed, 66.3% believed filters were worthwhile whereas only 35.9% thought they were cost effective. Only 34.8% of anaesthetists believed that the supposed extra efficiency of pleated hydrophobic membrane filters over electrostatic filters merited their extra cost.

Notizen: The normal development of the tissues of attachment of mouse molar teeth was studied using standard histological techniques. Jaws were taken from mice on the day of birth and each subsequent day, up to and including thirty days after birth, and examined. At birth, the molar teeth were in the late shell stage of development and were enclosed in the dental sac. Subsequent growth of the crown was accompanied by minor changes in the dental sac and alveolar bone. The periodontal ligament began to develop when root formation began. Fibres were laid down in a superior-oblique orientation which was maintained throughout the prefunctional and functional phases of eruption although changes which gave rise to the cervical fibre groups took place in the latter part of the prefunctional phase. Changes in the alveolar bone and cementum were observed as the tooth became functional. It was concluded that the periodontal ligament was preadapted to function and changes in other tissues of attachment, occurring as the teeth attained functional occlusion, were designed to strengthen the attachment of the fibres to bone and tooth.

Notizen: Histopathological studies of teeth transplanted between genetically identical and dissimilar animals and to animals in which the immune response is suppressed or enhanced show that autografts and isogratts degenerate but then are repaired, whereas allografts show a bewildering array of changes from almost total destruction to total repair. Some explanations for the repair of teeth in an immunologically hostile environment are put forward. The immunological aspects of tooth transplantation are also reviewed. Transplanted teeth stimulate an immune response from the host and are subject to the same rules of genetic relationship which apply to other tissues. Most components of the teeth are antigenic in isolation but only the pulp and periodontal ligament have so far been demonstrated to possess these properties in viro. Transplanted teeth also elicit antibody formation but the importance of antibodies in the rejection process is still disputed. It is concluded that teeth are not immunologically privileged tissues but will elicit cell-mediated responses from allogeneic hosts and are subject to the same invasive-destructive lesions as a result. The peculiar observations of repair of allogeneic teeth and delayed immune responses can be explained by considering the histopathology of transplanted teeth and their capacity for repair. Finally, the use of transplanted teeth to study odontogenesis and pathological entities such as odontogenic cysts and reparative dentin formation are briefly reviewed.

Notizen: Abstract. The enamel organs of subcutaneously transplanted mouse molar teeth undergo cyst formation and present a model for the study of the pathogenesis of developmental odontogenic cysts. Maxillary molars extracted from 10-day-old C57B1 mice were grafted subcutaneously into adult mice of the same strain. The grafts were recovered between 2 and 50 days after operation and routinely prepared for histological examination. After initial degeneration, the enamel organ took the form of a squamous epithelium in which after 5 to 6 days squamous hyperplasia took place. Cystic degeneration within the epithelium produced cavities lined with a thick parakeratotic stratified squamous epithelium which resembled the lining of an epidermoid implantation cyst. As the cysts enlarged the lining changed in appearance to a thin squamous non-keratinized epithelium. Similar features have been described in other experimentally produced cysts and in some odontogenic cysts in humans. Their different morphology may arise from interaction between the surrounding connective tissue with epithelium at different stages of development.

Notizen: Ten-day-old mouse teeth were grafted subcutaneously into adults of an unrelated strain which were either untreated or had rejected a skin graft from the same strain as the tooth donors. First set allografts degenerated rapidly after grafting and were only sparsely repopulated subsequently. No cell-mediated Immune response was observed. In contrast, second set allografts were heavily infiltrated with mononuclear leukocytes which persisted throughout the study, although the coronal pulp was never involved. It was suggested that first set allografts did not suffer a cell-mediated response because rapid degeneration of the cellular components removed the immunogenic target tissue before the host response could be effected.

Notizen: Abstract. Male adult mice of the C57B1 strain were grafted subcutaneously with two maxillary molar teeth extracted from 10-day-old mice of the same strain. The grafts were removed at intervals of 2 to 50 days after transplantation and examined histologically. The cellular components of the grafts degenerated rapidly until by four days only a narrow strip of viable tissue remained at the cervix. Blood vessels entered the cervix at five days and spread throughout the pulp during the following week. At the same time, the pulp was repopulated. Cellular dentin was deposited at the cervix at five days, and condensations of cells were visible adjacent to these deposits. These cells differentiated into odontoblasts which gradually formed a continuous layer in the transplants and secreted varying amounts of secondary dentin. The derivatives of the dental papilla thus recovered their function after a time, whereas the enamel organ derivatives formed epithelial cysts around the crowns of the transplanted teeth. No root growth occurred in any of the grafts. It is thought that the initial loss of blood supply and subsequent establishment of vascular connections between host and graft influenced the pattern and type of degeneration and repair.

Notizen: Proliferative populations of cells within the epithelial lining of developing experimental odontogenic cysts were identified by labeling with 3H-thymidine. Mouse molar teeth extracted from 10-day-old mice were transplanted subcutaneously and host animals were injected with 3H-thymidine 1 h prior to sacrifice. The cysts which developed around the crown of the transplanted teeth were prepared for autoradiographical examination. Labeling indices were high initially but decreased rapidly as the cysts enlarged. The pattern of labeling, however, bore no resemblance to the labeling of the reduced enamel epithelium from which the cysts developed. It was concluded that labeling activity reflects only the state of development and activity of the cyst and not the origin of the cyst.
