Notizen: Electron attachment mass spectrometry (EAMS) has been developed to study mixtures of electronegative gases and plasmas. A quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) has been used to detect negative ions, formed from sampled species by attachment of low energy electrons. Varying the electron energy allows to collect the attachment cross section of the considered species. EAMS appears to be a very powerful technique to study the chemistry of electronegative gases. Unlike ionization mass spectrometry, where cross sections are low at the threshold and rather flat over a broad range of electron energies, attachment resonances are sharp and distinct. Also very limited fragmentation of the parent negative ion occurs, so a given molecule yields only a few different negative ions. This facilitates identification of components in a gas mixture. It is particularly advantageous for detection of large, fragile molecules, which break up after ionization, but can be easily transformed into large negative ions. Moreover, sensitive detection of active species is possible due to their relatively high attachment cross sections. A particularly important application of EAMS is the determination of an effective attachment cross section in a plasma. Recording this cross section allows to decide on the actual negative ion formation mechanism in the plasma environment, where active products of plasma conversion can significantly alter the negative ion production channels and consequently the whole balance of charged particles. Examples of EAMS applications to fluorocarbon gases and low-pressure radio-frequency plasmas are discussed. In a CF4 discharge conversion of the parent gas into species like C2F6 and C3F8 is easily visualized. The dominant mechanism of negative ion formation in the plasma is electron attachment to these minority species and not to the parent gas. Also larger polymers are readily formed in fluorocarbon plasmas. In a C2F6 discharge molecules with up to ten carbon atoms (the mass limit of our apparatus) have been detected using EAMS. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An efficient vacuum ultraviolet light source of large diameter has been developed for use in photoexcited processes. It has a novel structure in which microwaves propagating through a sapphire window break down Xe gas enclosed in a disk-shaped volume and thereby produce intense emission from Xe at a wavelength of 147 nm. By optimizing the pulse width and the repetition rate, we obtained an illuminance of more than 3 mW/cm2 at the window surface. When this lamp was used as a source for photoinduced chemical vapor deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon films, a deposition rate of 5 nm/min was attained.

Notizen: We have successfully grown nanometer-scale InGaN self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) on a GaN surface without any surfactants, using atmospheric-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Atomic force microscopy shows that the average diameter of InGaN QDs is as small as 8.4 nm. Next, we have investigated the dependence of the QDs properties on the growth conditions: the amount of InGaN deposited and the growth temperature. Moreover, we have investigated the optical property of InGaN QDs, so that the strong emission was seen at 2.86 eV at room temperature. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report an optical spectroscopic study of GaSb/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) formed by the Stranski–Krastanow growth mode using molecular beam epitaxy. We identify the QD luminescence by photoluminescence obtained at different excitation energies and densities. We show that, for these structures, not only the spectral position of peaks, but also their relative intensities are critically dependent upon the density of photogenerated carriers. Photoluminescence excitation (PLE) measurements confirm our assignment of the QD related peaks and a feature ∼25–27 meV higher in energy than the PLE detection energy is discussed in terms of phonon relaxation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Photoluminescence (PL) spectra were measured for sub-nanometer-thick GaN quantum wells (QWs) with Al0.8Ga0.2N barriers, which were grown by atmospheric-pressure metal–organic chemical-vapor deposition. The thickness of the GaN QW layers was systematically varied from 1 to 4 ML. We clearly observed a PL peak at room temperature at a wavelength as short as 247 nm (5.03 eV) from 1-ML-thick QWs. The effective confinement energy, or difference between this recombination energy and the band gap of bulk GaN, is as large as 1.63 eV. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Objectives:  Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and proteases have been implicated as important factors in the initiation and progression of human periodontal diseases. A single application of LPS or proteases is insufficient to induce periodontal pocket formation or periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to assess the combined effect of lipopolysaccharide and proteases on rat periodontal tissues, and create a periodontal disease model.Materials and methods:  Forty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: combination group (treated with both LPS and proteases solutions); LPS group; proteases group; and control. Each solution was introduced daily into the palatal gingival sulcus of maxillary molars for 8 weeks. The tissues were evaluated histometrically and immunohistochemically. Results:  In the LPS group, elongation of rete ridge, apical migration of junctional epithelium (JE), increased numbers of B cells in connective tissue, and resorption of alveolar bone were observed. In the proteases group, the increase in the number of infiltrating polymorphonuclear leukocytes and blood vessels in the connective tissue was greater than that of the LPS group. Conclusions:  The effects of LPS on periodontal tissues differed from those of proteases. The addition of proteases augmented and increased the effects of LPS, which were apical migration, intraepithelial cleavage of JE, and increased B cell density. The lesions in the combination group resembled established lesions of human periodontitis, with the exception of the low density of plasma cells.

Notizen: Proteolysis of a myofibril-bound serine proteinase (MBP) from carp Cyprinus carpio on myofibrillar proteins and their gel formation ability were investigated. MBP readily decomposed myosin heavy chain as indicated by SDS-PAGE. In the preparation of kamaboko, the gel formation ability was diminished by addition of MBP. The optimum degradation temperatures of MBP to myosin heavy chain in myofibril and kamaboko gel were 55°C and 60°C, respectively. The degradation effects of MBP on actin, α-actinin and tropomyosin were studied by the immunoblotting method. Because of its myofibril-bound and myofibrillar protein degradation characteristics, MBP was regarded as the proteinase most probably involved in the modori effect.
