Notizen: The acceleration of protons is investigated by tracing their trajectories in the electric and magnetic fields obtained from a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of local magnetic reconnection. The magnetic reconnection is induced by imposing a localized anomalous resistivity in two different initial configurations, the first one without a By component and the second with a positive By superimposed in the two-dimensional Harris field lying in the xz plane. Applying the trajectory calculations to the geotail condition, the previously published results have been mostly recovered for the By=0 case. For the nonzero By case, remarkable asymmetry about the z=0 plane appears in the trajectories, and the pitch angle and spatial dependencies of energy gain. For the particles found above the z=0 plane at the earthward edge from the X-line, results are similar to those in the By=0 case, while they are quite different for the particles found below the z=0 plane. The trajectories of the particles exiting the simulation domain below the z=0 plane are much more complicated than those of the particles exiting above the z=0 plane. Consequently, the duskward skewness of the energy gain, which is well defined above the z=0 plane, is no longer a general and robust feature below the z=0 plane. It is expected that this up–down asymmetry appears not only in the geotail condition but also in other systems as long as the symmetry about the reconnection current sheet plane breaks down by the presence of By, i.e., the magnetic field component aligned with the X-line. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In an effort to establish their possible histogenesis, three cases of renal rhabdoid tumour and their metastases were studied both by a battery of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique and by electron microscopy. Vimentin was demonstrated in renal rhabdoid tumour in two cases and in all metastatic deposits. Cytokeratin (39, 43 and 50 kD) was not demonstrable in the three renal rhabdoid tumours, but was strongly positive in all metastatic lesions in one case. Epithelial membrane antigen was present in one renal rhabdoid tumour and in pulmonary metastases in two cases. Ultrastructural study showed epithelial differentiation in all tumours: basal lamina and convergent tight junctions were demonstrated; intracytoplasmic intermediate filaments were present in all primary and metastatic tumours. Rhabdoid tumours thus exhibited heterogeneous immunophenotypic expression suggesting that they are derived from mesenchymal cells which are capable of differentiating into epithelial cells.

Notizen: Abstract Electromicroscopic examinations were carried out on 30 myocardial biopsies taken from 22 human donor hearts immediately after excision (prestorage) or immediately before transplantation (post-storage). All electron micrographs were independently examined by two morphologists. Eleven structures were examined in each micrograph, and each structure was scored according to the degree of injury. A good interobserver correlation was obtained in 84 % of the structures scored. In the prestorage left ventricular biopsies (n = 11), approximately 20 %–25 % showed moderate to severe ultrastructural injury. The ultrastructural injury observed in the poststorage left ventricular biopsies (n = 15) was no different from that in the prestorage group, particularly injury to the sarcomere and mitochondria. A similar degree and pattern of injury was seen in the right ventricle (n = 4). There was no evidence that an ischemic storage period of less than 6 h increased the degree of injury seen. However, there was a higher incidence of moderate to severe injury in those hearts excised from donors initially dependent on high inotropic support.

Notizen: Abstract Radio-emission of pulsars is investigated through computer simulation. We assume that electronpositron plasma is thermal and beam particles haveγ b ≈ in the plasma rest frame. The main purpose of this study is to search for unstable electromagnetic waves which may be caused by beam-plasma interactions. We obtain the dominant waves in the range of radio frequencies in the observer frame. The results show that transverse electromagnetic waves grow rapidly, while electrostatic waves have very slow growth.

Notizen: A computational algorithm for the detailed simulation of a batch emulsion polymerization reactor is discussed. The model is applied to the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, and the model predictions are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. Further computations show the influence of reactor operating conditions on the polymer product and the reactor performance.

Notizen: A polynomial subdistribution method for analyzing the correlation profile in photon correlation spectroscopy of polymer solutions is described. This method generates a continuous distribution function from the measured photoelectron time-correlation function, which can be related to particle size or molecular weight distribution of solute. The method is tested using simulated data for unimodal and bimodal distributions and compared with cumulant and histogram methods, respectively. The polynomial subdistribution method has an advantage in that it not only generates a continuous distribution curve but also works well for bimodal distributions whose peaks are close together.
