    Notizen: The viscosity of a nondegenerate molecular gas A, in equilibrium with its dissociation products B and C (having comparable masses) is considered. In contrast with the usual van der Waals corrections to Maxwell's formula, a new term is found, which decreases with pressure and increases with temperature. The prevalence of these effects on van der Waals corrections and its experimental observability are studied. It is shown that alkaline molecules, at pressures of order 10−2 Torr, and temperatures below 103 K, should be good candidates to display the effect of a gaseous viscosity decreasing with the square root of the pressure.

    Notizen: A definition is given of corrugational stability for plane-fronted shock waves. By using the theory of singular surfaces it is shown how one can obtain necessary conditions for corrugation stability. The theory is then applied to relativistic shock waves and yields a restriction on the state equation of a relativistic fluid in order for it to allow the existence of corrugationally stable shocks.

    Notizen: We report an observation of holographic gratings recorded exposing a homogeneous mixture of pre-polymer and liquid crystal to a polarization light pattern. This polarization pattern is obtained by a superposition of two waves with orthogonal linear polarization. The idea to use this technique to realize holographic gratings come from the possibility of controlling the liquid crystal alignment inside the droplets, through the photoalignment, during the photoinduced polymerization process. On the contrary, the usual methods of writing diffraction gratings in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals are based on intensity holographic technique that controls the polymerization process. Diffraction gratings, composed of liquid crystal droplets having a particular internal alignment, are observed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Background  There is a need for reliable, easily measurable laboratory markers that may help dermatologists to predict the course of mycosis fungoides (MF) when they first evaluate their patients.Objectives  Our objective was to identify clinical, haematological or immunological parameters as predictors of mortality in patients with MF.Methods  We conducted a retrospective study on a prevalent cohort of 124 patients with MF hospitalized at IDI-IRCCS, Rome, Italy, from 1983 to 2001. We calculated the proportion of patients surviving (Kaplan–Meier product–limit estimates) 5 and 10 years after first hospital admission, and hazard ratios (HR) from the Cox proportional hazards model.Results  Patients' survival was linked to age and staging (lower survival in older patients and in patients with staging IIB–IV). Higher numbers of white blood cells (WBC) and neutrophils, lower numbers of CD8+ lymphocytes, low haematocrit and lower levels of albumin were significantly associated with a lower survival probability. When simultaneously accounting for age and staging, CD8+ [HR = 3·02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·01–9·07 for CD8+ 〈 250 vs. ≥ 600 cells µL−1] and WBC (HR = 2·59, 95% CI 0·96–6·96 for WBC ≥ 9000 vs. 〈 6000 cells µL−1) were associated with survival. In addition, we observed an exceedingly high risk of death (HR = 12·40, 95% CI 3·11–49·43) for patients with a combination of WBC ≥ 9000 and CD8+ 〈 600 cells µL−1 vs. WBC 〈 9000 and CD8+ ≥ 600 cells µL−1).Conclusions  The measurement of CD8+ cells and WBC in MF seems to be a promising criterion to predict survival, and possibly to support treatment decisions and inclusion of patients in randomized controlled trials.

    Notizen: Abstract Stem chlorenchymatous cells from well-watered and water-stressed plants of Cissus quadrangularis L. were examined to evaluate the effect of drying on cell structure and metabolism. At a stem relative water content as low as 52-58%, cellular integrity was maintained, but some qualitative and quantitative alterations occurred. Chlorophyll coment was higher in stressed plants, and the intact photosynthetic apparatus exhibited an increased degree of thylakoid stacking paralleled by a lower chlorophyll a/h ratio. Overnight malate accumulation was very low. Starch was retained but its day/night fluctuation was practically suppressed. Plastosomes were smaller and fewer, and the range of their daily fluctuation was very reduced. Vacuoles underwent fragmentation and accumulated osmiophilic deposits. The maintenance of the cellular integrity accounts for the ability of C. quadrangularis to recover rapidly from water stress.
