Notizen: Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectrum of red mercuric iodide single crystal for two kinds of different grown methods was measured and compared at low temperatures. The different spectral structures were found for the different grown crystals. At the band-gap region two kinds of photoluminescence were similar. Sharp near band-gap luminescence due to the radiative annihilation of free and bound excitons was observed at 530 nm and a luminescent tail band that originated from the nonradiative annihilation of bound excitons appeared at 540 nm for two crystals. The 560 nm band was observed for the sublimation crystals and a broad luminescent band appeared at 630 nm for the acetone solution crystals, respectively. The TRPL experiment of the near band-gap lines revealed that luminescence comprised a fast and a slow decay component and showed several relaxation processes in free and bound exciton annihilation. The temporal behavior of the tail band revealed the same regularity for two kinds of crystals. The behavior was described with the rate equations and was obviously different from the band-gap luminescence. The 560 nm band had much slower decay than near band-gap decay. At the 630 nm band PL intensity was expressed as I(t)=t−n(r). The experiment of the red band showed clearly that the luminescence was ascribed to the radiative recombination of donor–acceptor pairs. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Ceramic coatings of zirconium nitride have been fabricated on nickel, silicon, and M2 high-speed steel by methods of reactive magnetron sputtering ion plating (RMSP) and the dynamic ion mixing (DIM). The microhardness values of ZrN film prepared by RMSP with different nitrogen partial pressure have been discussed. The scratch tests provide that the adhesion of ZrN film produced by dynamic ion mixing is better than that by reactive magnetron sputtering ion plating. Auger electron spectroscopy analysis is used to analyze the composition distribution of ZrN film prepared by DIM and indicates that there is a transitional layer between the ZrN film and substrate. Meanwhile, by cross-sectional and the plan-view transmission electron microscopy, it is observed that the interlayer of amorphous structure exists in the interface zone between ZrN film and substrate. According to the analysis of energy-dispersive x-ray analysis patterns, the composition of this amorphous region fabricated by RMSP is Ni51Zr49 (≈NiZr), as is that fabricated by DIM. (Up to now it has not been reported that the amorphous transitional layer occurs in reactive magnetron sputtering ion plating). The reason why the adhesion of coating by DIM is better than that by RMSP is not the formation of the transitional layer in ion-beam-assisted deposition but the particle bombardment effects on the bulk of the thin film.

Notizen: A multipass tandem Fabry–Perot interferometer was used to measure the Brillouin light scattering in nematic polymer solutions of poly-γ-benzyl glutamate (PBG). The longitudinal acoustic phonon frequency and linewidth were determined as a function of the angle between the phonon wave vector and the nematic director. We have observed an anisotropy of 22% in sound velocity and 40% in the Brillouin linewidth in PBG nematic solutions. Our analysis indicates that elastic relaxation due to polymer concentration fluctuations is important. However, the proposed second sound wave could not be determined due to the experimental limit of the present technique.

Notizen: GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells (QWs), selectively intermixed by SiO2 capping and rapid thermal annealing, have been characterized on a microscale using spatially resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. From the evolution of the PL spectra across the boundary between the unmixed and intermixed regions, it was concluded that the transition region is narrower than the 1.5 μm excitation beam diameter. The magnitude of the intermixing was also found to increase with the thickness of the oxide. The present intermixed QWs were found to be stable against subsequent thermal treatment below the temperature limit imposed by the intrinsic interdiffusion. These results demonstrate that the effective band gap of QWs, and their physical properties, can be adjusted by controlling the oxide thickness profile.

Notizen: During mammalian cortical development, neuronal precursors proliferate within ventricular regions then migrate to their target destinations in the cortical plate, where they organize into layers. In the rat, most cortical neuronal migration occurs during the final week of gestation (Bayer et al., 1991; Jacobson, 1991). At this time (E15–E21), reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that cortical homogenates contain mRNA encoding brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the catalytic form of its high-affinity receptor, TrkB. lmmunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization of sections revealed that the catalytic TrkB receptors predominantly localize to regions containing migratory cells. Many TrkB+ cells exhibited the classic morphology of migrating neurons, suggesting that TrkB ligands play a role in cortical neuronal migration. We analysed whether TrkB ligands influence the motility of embryonic cortical cells (from E15–E21) using a quantitative in vitro chemotaxis assay. High-affinity TrkB ligands (BDNF and NT4/5) stimulated chemotaxis (directed migration) of embryonic neurons at concentrations ranging from 1 to 100 ng/ml. NT-3, a low-affinity TrkB ligand, only stimulated significant migration at high concentrations (±100 ng/ml). Peak migration to BDNF was observed at gestational day 18 (E18). BDNF-induced chemotaxis was blocked by either tyrosine kinase inhibitor, K252a, or the Ca2+-chelator, BAPTA-AM, suggesting that BDNF-induces motility via autophosphorylation of TrkB receptor proteins and involves Ca2+-dependent mechanisms. BDNF-stimulation of increased cytosolic Ca2+ was confirmed with optical recordings of E18 cortical cells loaded with Ca2+ indicator dye. Thus, signal transduction through the TrkB receptor complex directs neuronal migration, suggesting that, in vivo, BDNF exerts chemotropic effects that are critical to morphogenesis of the cortex.
