Notizen: Photothermal technique is studied for nondestructive imaging of irregularity in a platelike sample partially clamped circumferentially. By using a flexural resonance of the sample itself, the sensitivity for obtaining the image has been improved. The excitation efficiency for the resonant vibration at different positions of the heating laser beam is dependent on the resonance mode as well as the clamp condition.

Notizen: B–C–N–H thin films were deposited by plasma chemical-vapor deposition with an external capacitively coupled reactor at an rf frequency of 13.56 MHz. The films were formed from a gas mixture of B2H6 (5.25 vol % in N2), methane, and argon or nitrogen as carrier gases. The deposition was carried out at room temperature and without heating the substrate. The films were transparent in the range of 10 000–2000-A(ring) wavelengths. The Knoop microhardnesses were 1825–3324 kg/mm2 and the refractive index was 1.3–1.6. An extensive discussion of the effect of the deposition conditions on both microhardness and film composition is given. In addition, the interrelation between the microhardness and composition is illustrated.

Notizen: A simple beam chopper advantageously using the thermoelastic bending due to photothermal effect is reported. The mechanical vibration for chopping is generated due to the modulated irradiation from a laser diode so that the chopper is remotely operated.

Notizen: Ephedrine, a sympathomimetic drug, may stimulate the central nervous system via its amphetamine-like effect under light general anaesthesia. We compared the effect of ephedrine on auditory-evoked potentials with that of etilefrine, a sympathomimetic drug that lacks an amphetamine-like effect, in patients undergoing abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia with 67% nitrous oxide in oxygen and epidural blockade. Ephedrine (0.08 mg.kg−1 intravenously) significantly decreased the latencies of Nb and P1 from 49.5 (4.2) [mean (SD)] and 63.9 (9.1) ms to 45.9 (4.2) and 59.0 (9.9) ms, respectively; whereas etilefrine (0.02 mg.kg−1 intravenously) caused no significant changes in these potentials. In addition, the latencies of Nb and P1 before drug administration were positively correlated with patient age. These findings suggest that ephedrine can cause excitation of the central nervous system during light general anaesthesia, and that auditory-evoked potentials may be a sensitive indicator of the depth of anaesthesia.

Notizen: Vacuum evaporation of a merocyanine dye, 3-ethyl-5 [2-(3-ethyl-2-benzothiazolidene) ethyldene]-2-thioxo-4-thiazolidione, onto different substrates such as bare and surface-oxidized silicon wafers and a quartz glass substrate is done. There is a difference in color between a film deposited on the bare silicon substrate and one on either a quartz glass plate or a silicon wafer with a thick (96.5-nm) oxide layer. The dye film on quartz has an absorption maximum at 560 nm, whereas that on bare silicon has one at 582 nm. The bare crystalline silicon surface may give dye molecules more opportunity to aggregate than amorphous silicon dioxide or quartz surfaces. The dye molecules are preferentially oriented along the [100] direction of the substrate crystal, with the carbonyl group parallel to and the conjugated aromatic plane perpendicular to the substrate surface, although there is no detectable difference of orientation between the films deposited on these different substrates.

Notizen: Glucagon inhibits digestive motility and is used for endoscopic premedication; however, its effect on cardiopulmonary function during endoscopy has not yet been fully investigated.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To clarify the efficacy and safety of glucagon compared with butyl scopolamine bromide as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy premedication.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Two hundred and forty consecutive patients over 40 years of age, referred for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, without any complications, were studied. These patients were randomly premedicated with butyl scopolamine bromide (SC group) or glucagon (G group). Time course changes in blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, heart rate and the number of retching episodes during endoscopy were examined. The efficacy of glucose tablets after upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to prevent hypoglycaemia caused by glucagon was evaluated. Cardiopulmonary parameters were also examined in 77 complicated patients with glucagon premedication (GC group).〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:A continuous increase in heart rate during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was observed in the SC group, but not in the G and GC groups. Blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation and number of retching episodes were not different between the groups. Hypoglycaemia-related symptoms were frequent in the G group without glucose tablets, but were prevented by the administration of glucose.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Glucagon has a weaker effect on cardiopulmonary function during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy than butyl scopolamine bromide. Glucose administration prevents hypoglycaemia-related symptoms caused by glucagon.

Notizen: : The cytoprotective agent, ecabet sodium, inhibits urease activity and growth of Helicobacter pylori.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ecabet sodium-based eradication of H. pylori infection, compared with a lansoprazole-based regimen, in a randomized multicentre study.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Subjects and methods: A total of 120 H. pylori-positive patients were assigned to one of two treatment regimens for 2 weeks: ecabet sodium 1 g b.d., amoxicillin 500 mg t.d.s. and clarithromycin 400 mg b.d. (EAC: 60 patients); or lansoprazole 30 mg (o.m.) with the same antimicrobial agents (LAC: 60 patients). Cure of infection was assessed by a 13C-urea breath test 1 month after completion of treatment.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results: One patient in the EAC group and two in the LAC group did not complete therapy because of an adverse event, and three did not undergo the 13C-urea breath test. Cure rates for the intention-to-treat, all-patients-treated and per protocol analysis in the EAC group were 85%, 86% and 88%, respectively, whereas those in the LAC group were 85%, 88% and 91%. There were no significant differences in cure rate or adverse events between the two regimens.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: Ecabet sodium in combination with amoxicillin and clarithromycin is as effective as lansoprazole-based eradication therapy for H. pylori.
