    Notizen: The dispersion of ideal test particles in electrostatic drift-wave turbulence is investigated numerically. A self-consistent model with an internal instability drive is used to obtain the turbulent two-dimensional (2D) flow-field. It is shown that nonlinear couplings lead to the formation of coherent vortical structures in the flow. The dispersion of the particles is found to be anisotropic, with the weakest dispersion in the direction of the density gradient. By distinguishing between particles trapped in structures and free particles, it is demonstrated that the trapping and subsequent displacement of particles by nonlinear vortex structures enhances the particle diffusion in the direction of the background density gradient. Conditional diffusion coefficients are obtained showing that particles trapped by the vortex structures are convected by the structures. The time a particle on the average stays trapped in the structure is closely related to the lifetime of the vortical structures. The relation between the diffusion coefficient obtained from the test particle dispersion and an effective diffusion coefficient obtained from the cross-field turbulent flux is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Low-frequency electrostatic fluctuations are studied experimentally in a low-β plasma, with particular attention to their importance for the anomalous plasma transport across magnetic field lines. The presence of large coherent structures in a turbulent background at the edge of the plasma column is demonstrated by a statistical analysis. The importance of these structures for the turbulent transport is investigated. The study is extended by a multichannel conditional analysis to illustrate detailed properties and parameter dependences of the turbulent transport. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: During one alpine skiing season injuries were registered prospectively among 951 Danish alpine skiers. The injury incidence was 19.4 injuries per 1000 skiing days, or 3.4 injuries per 1000 skiing hours. The incidence of injuries treated by a doctor was 5.9 injuries per 1000 skiing days, which is 2–5 times higher than previously reported. Lower extremity doctor-treated injuries comprised 65% of the total and upper extremity doctor-treated injuries 25% - a distribution seen 25 years ago in alpine skiing countries. Only 18% of the thumb injuries were seen by a doctor. Neither age, preholiday training, self-rated skiing ability, ski school attendance during the week nor the use of rented versus owned equipment significantly influenced the risk of injury.

    Notizen: Low-frequency, flute-type electrostatic fluctuations propagating across a strong, homogeneous magnetic field are studied experimentally. The fluctuations are generated by the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. The presence of relatively long-lived vortexlike structures in a background of wide-band turbulent fluctuations is demonstrated by a conditional sampling technique. Depending on plasma parameters, the dominant structures can appear as monopole or multipole vortices, dipole vortices in particular. The importance of large structures for the turbulent plasma diffusion is discussed. A statistical analysis of the randomly varying plasma flux is presented.

    Notizen: The formation and dynamics of dipolar vortex structures in two-dimensional flows are studied. Localized initial structures possessing a finite linear momentum are found to develop into dipoles by direct numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The detailed structure of the evolving dipoles depend on the initial condition. However, the gross properties of their evolution are only weakly dependent on the detailed structure and can be well-described by the so-called Lamb-dipole solution. The viscous decay of the Lamb-dipole, leading to an expansion and a decreasing velocity, is well described by an adiabatic theory. During the expansion the dipole is found to trap fluid as it evolves. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Biopsies from a 5-year-old girl with dermatomyositis and universal calcinosis were studied histo-pathologically and by means of electron optical techniques. The dermis was infiltrated by fibro-blasts, lymphocytes and plasma cells. In the lower part of the dermis, dense basophilic areas were present. In the vicinity of these areas irregular elastic fibers appeared. In the electron microscope these elastic fibers appeared mineralized to varying degrees. The mineral part was identified as calcium apatite (either calcium-hydroxy-apatite or calcium fluoroapatite) by X-ray microanalysis and selected area diffraction. No calcification was observed outside the elastic fibers.

    Notizen: During one year 4398 injured athletes were treated at the casualty wards of Aarhus, Denmark; 156 were practicing track and field disciplines. In the same period 54 track athletes of a Danish sport club were followed in order to register any lesion incurred during sports activity. Thirty-one athletes (57%) had 35 injuries, giving an injury incidence of 1.8 per 1000 hours of practice. At follow-up after 1 year, 13% of all athletes still had complaints, and none of them had returned to former sports activity. Jumpers had overuse symptoms correlated to take-off, and sprains or fractures related to downstrokes. Runners had a higher risk of overuse injuries than jumpers, especially involving the Achilles tendon and the plantar aponeurosis. Young athletes had a higher injury incidence per time than older participants; and women had higher injury risk than men.

    Notizen: In a retrospective study, the consequences of arthroscopic meniscal resection in athletes with stable knees were analyzed. We found that 36% had been obliged to reduce or quit their sport activity 8.6 years after surgery. The risk factors associated with reduced sport ability were meniscal lesions other than the bucket-handle type, high age and involvement in ball games. Competitive athletes were not more at risk than recreational athletes. Forty-nine percent had at least one sign of arthrosis in the operated knee. More than one sign of Fairbank's degenerative changes were associated with reduced sports performance.

It is noted that the enstrophy cascade is most active on the distorted vortex boundaries, with a Kolmogorov-like spectrum E(k)≈k−α, α≤4, developed at high wave numbers. The inverse energy cascade is completed when the vortices merge into one of larger size. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
