    Notes: A wavenumber dependent eddy viscosity is calculated for a simple two-dimensional drift wave model from direct numerical simulations for a wide range of parameters and cutoff wavenumber. The damping rate given by this eddy viscosity is well modeled by a hyperviscosity, where the power and magnitude are parameterized as functions of the shear in the resolved advecting velocity. Tests in simulations with low resolution find that the use of this parameterized hyperviscosity yields somewhat better results than the use of hyperviscosity with fixed power and is significantly better the use of no extra damping term or a Smagorinsky type eddy viscosity. This parameterized hyperviscosity is very useful computationally, since reducing resolution requirements by even a factor of 2 reduces the computational requirements by a factor of 8 in two dimensions, or 16 in three dimensions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The etching behavior of gallium nitride (GaN), aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1−xN), and aluminum nitride (AlN) has been systematically examined in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) using Cl2 and Ar as the reagents. Etch rates were strongly influenced by ICP power and dc bias, while relatively insensitive to pressure, flow rate, and gas composition. Maximum etch rates of 9800 Å/min for GaN, 9060 Å/min for Al0.28Ga0.72N, and 7490 Å/min for AlN were attained. The etch profiles were highly anisotropic over the range of conditions studied. The dc bias had to exceed certain voltages before significant etch rates were obtained. These values were 〈−20 V for GaN, −40 V for Al0.28Ga0.72N, and 〉−50 V for AlN. As such, increasing selectivity for GaN over Al0.28Ga0.72N and AlN was achieved at dc biases below −40 V. At −20 V, the GaN etch rates were 38 times greater than AlN and a factor of 10 greater than Al0.28Ga0.72N. These results demonstrate the importance of ion bombardment in the etching of these materials. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In a series of 4 species of owls and 12 species of diurnal raptors, an additional bone was present bilaterally in the area of the carpus. Designating the bone as an “additional bone of the raptorial carpal region” is suggested pending appropriate embryological studies to determine the origin of the bone. Generally, the bone was present in owls and in diurnal raptors with relatively short, rounded wings, but was absent in species with longer, more tapered wings. The bone lies at the cranial edge of the carpal area near the radial carpal bone, and is fixed to the surrounding skeleton by ligaments. The tendon of the tensor patagium longus muscle has one slip that attaches to the additional bone and another that passes over its craniodorsal surface en route to insertion. Awareness of the occurrence of this bone in some raptors, but not others, is essential in clinical evaluation of wing injuries, as well as in forming a prognosis for the return to soundness, the potential for release, and, therefore, the life of an injured raptor.

    Notes: In the angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare scalare) numerous rodlet cells were found in the large post-orbital blood vessel caudal to the eye and in the surrounding extravascular space. Within the vessel the rodlet cells formed striking regular arrays, along the inner aspect of the wall. The rodlets within the cells were positive to PAS but negative to Sudan Black B, Masson's, and the Fuelgen stain. The capsule around the cells was negative for all these stains. These rodlet cells appeared to be traversing the vessel endothelium, and to be pushing the endothelium aside without damaging it. Some discharged their contents into the vessel, but we never observed the release of intact rodlets. The nuclei of rodlet cells in actual contact with the vessel were at the end of the cell more distant from the endothelial wall. Cell-to-cell adhesion structures or communications junctions between rodlet cells and the endothelium were not evident. A putative rodlet cell precursor in the extravascular space contained large electron-dense granules, and extended pseudopodia that contacted nearby rodlet cells. Based on their morphology, tissue distribution, and their behaviour, we conclude that the rodlet cell is an endogeneous teleost cell type, and possibly represents a form of matured granulocyte.

    Notes: The stomach of Oreochromis niloticus was divided into three distinct regions: initial, middle and terminal, corresponding roughly to the cardiac, fundic, and pyloric portions of the mammalian stomach. Grossly, the organ showed initial and terminal portions, the former connected to the distal part of the oesophagus and the latter to the proximal portion of the intestine. There was also a middle region, forming a large blind diverticulum communicating with the first two at their point of junction. The initial or cardiac region was shorter than the middle region but longer than the terminal one, and had a smooth surface devoid of gastric pits. The epithelium in this region was simple columnar devoid of goblet cells, with glandular regions in the lamina propria. The mucosa of the middle or fundic region had gastric pits lined by columnar epithelium, and simple tubular glands filled most of the lamina propria. The terminal or pyloric part of the stomach was very short and its mucosa was slightly folded and devoid of both gastric pits and mucous glandular cells. The lining epithelium of this portion of the stomach was simple columnar and a few goblet cells were seen at its junction with the first part of the intestine. The tunica muscularis of the stomach contained skeletal muscle in the initial and terminal regions, usually intermingled with smooth muscle fibres. Skeletal muscle fibres were also observed in the first portion of the small intestine, near the junction with the stomach.
