Notizen: summary  Nowadays, dental resins find increasing use by practitioners. However, photopolymerization of such resins is limited to a so-called ‘depth of cure’. To face this problem, dentists superimpose resin layers of limited depth. This technique raises the problem of the quality of interlayer. This paper aims at screening different cases of adhesion at the interface. Shear strength of such interfacial layers is tested in shear mode in various conditions (with or without an oxygen-inhibited layer, or contaminated by saliva or water). Unexpectedly, the presence of an oxygen-inhibition on the first layer, as assessed using micro-Raman spectroscopy, induces higher shear strength. In this case, a cohesive break occurs while an adhesive one is observed in all the other cases.

Notizen: The purpose of this research was to determine the depth of cure of light-activated composites in relation with different clinically relevant parameters. A Raman spectroscopic method has been used. The measurement of cure is made on a relative basis by comparing the vibration band of the residual unpolymerized methacrylate C=C bond at 1640 cm–1 against the aromatic C=C stretching band at 1610 cm–1 used as an internal standard. The information gained draw attention to the importance of light transmission during the exposure. The influence of sample's thickness on the depth of cure is illustrated by a second order polynomial regression. The shade and translucency of the resin composite also modify the light transmission and thus have a significant influence on the degree of conversion. Moreover the light-source intensity and the distance from the curing tip are important parameters of influence. A significant reduction of the depth of cure is observed for all sample thickness of resin composite tested when using a light device with an intensity of 300 mW cm–2 as well as using a distance from the curing tip higher than 20 mm.

Notizen: We examined the impacts of remediation activities aimed at improving the water quality of hypereutrophic Villerest Reservoir, in which Microcystis aeruginosa dominated during the summer. We also compared nutrients and chlorophyll a data from this study with the results of a previous study on the reservoir. Between the two studies, the nitrogen and phosphorus loads into the reservoir from the main tributary decreased by 70% and 80%, respectively. Within the reservoir, the quantities of ammonia-nitrogen were similar in the two studies, and the total nitrogen was significantly higher in this study compared to the initial study. Both the phosphate-phosphorus and total phosphorus concentrations decreased significantly between the two studies. However, the statistically significant decrease in phosphate-phosphorus and total phosphorus did not always lead to a significant decrease in chlorophyll a concentrations. The nitrogen/phosphorus mass ratio during the present study remained well above five, the critical value below which summer blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa were observed in Villerest Reservoir. These study results indicated that the remediation activities being used to improve the water quality of Villerest Reservoir were off to a good start.

Notizen: Summary In order to test the validity of the prediction of the mating pattern of females from the sperm length distribution in males, three species ofDrosophila were analysed. Males in the three species are equally polygynous but females differ in the level of polyandry. A ‘low recurrence polyandry’ is observed in the sperm dimorphic speciesD. affinis while a ‘high recurrence polyandry’ is observed in the sperm monomorphic speciesD. latifasciaeformis andD. littoralis. These results are consistent with the hypothesis proposed previously that sperm dimorphism in males can only be maintained by a selective alternative in females (i.e. facultative female polygamy), whereas a stricter mating system (e.g., ‘obligatory’ polyandry) should only result in sperm monomorphism irrespective of the absolute value of sperm length.

Notizen: Abstract To examine the right ventricular response to acute respiratory failure, serial studies of biventricular performance were analysed in 34 such patients, specifically detailing the role of associated underlying disease. During the initial study, the 34 patients with acute respiratory failure had a higher right ventricular end-diastolic volume than the control group (+21%), associated with a decrease in right ventricular ejection fraction, abnormalities which tended to return to normal values in the 15 survivors. In the 9 patients who died of refractory hypoxemia with severe pulmonary hypertension, the right ventricular dilation allowed to maintain stroke volume. In contrast, in 8 patients who died of septic shock, biventricular function was progressively altered (right and left ventricular ejection fraction= -37% and -35%). In 4 patients who died of cardiogenic shock (viral myocarditis), the cardiac function was the lowest (right and left ventricular ejection fraction= -59% and -60%). Only patients with acute respiratory failure associated with septic shock or viral myocarditis are unable to maintain their stroke volume.

Notizen: Abstract The seasonal distribution of potential Glutamine Synthetase (GS) activities was studied in eutrophic Lake Aydat (France, Massif Central). The validity of this index of N-assimilation in field studies was tested by a comparison with the coupling of distributions of inorganic nitrogen uptake rate based on14C incorporation into proteins and the amino acids to protein ratio together with several abiotic and biotic parameters. The potential GS activities recorded during the seasonal succession of phytoplankton (characterized by the dominance of diatoms) were in the same order of magnitude of those reported from the very poor literature on this subject. Over high N-NO 3 - availability, the potential GS activities recorded were close to indirect estimations of N-uptake rates. During nitrogen depletion, high potential GS activities (which coincided with a development of small diatoms) were recorded suggesting that cell metabolism adapted to N-nutrient constraints. In addition, potential GS activity evolved concomitantly to other indicators of N-uptake and N-status. However, N-assimilation rates based on the enzymatic approach were lower than those obtained through indirect isotopic determination of uptakes rates. We suggest therefore that GS was not the unique pathway of ammonium assimilation in field populations.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract From April 1993 to May 1994, samples were taken monthly from the epilimnion, metalimnion and hypolimnion of two lakes: the eutrophic Lake Aydat, and the meso-oligotrophic Lake Pavin. Nitrate reductase (NR) activity was measured according to Hochman's (1986) modified procedure, to estimate potential nitrate assimilation by algal cells. Although the inorganic nitrogen (Ni) source was essentially in the oxidized form in both lakes (77 ± 24% and 81 ± 7% respectively in Lake Aydat and in Lake Pavin), specific NR activity (sNR) was 10.5 times higher in Lake Pavin than in Lake Aydat. Moreover in this latter ecosystem the distribution of specific NR activity was sporadic. In Lake Pavin, NR activity was correlated with nitrate concentration in the medium, nitrogen nutrient ratios (NO3/Ni, NH4/Ni and NO3/NH4) and biomass of some diatoms and Chlorophyceae. However, in the eutrophic ecosystem the temporal changes in NR activity were more complex. The specific NR activity seemed to be independent of the available inorganic nitrogen substrate but linked to the species composition of the natural phytoplankton community. As in Lake Pavin, the distribution of NR activity seemed to be linked to the biomass of some diatoms. However, this was insufficient to explain the sporadic distribution of NR activity. As ammonification and NH4 regeneration could occur rapidly and irregularly, NH4 could be preferentially assimilated.
