Notizen: Abstract Natural witherite (Ba0.99Sr0.01CO3) has been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the diamond anvil cell at eight pressures up to 8 GPa. At ambient pressure, cell dimensions are a = 5.3164(12) Å, b = 8.8921(19) Å, c = 6.4279(16) Å, and the structure was refined in space group Pmcn to R(F) = 0.020 from 2972 intensity data. The unit cell and atom position parameters for the orthorhombic cell were refined at pressures of 1.2, 2.0, 2.9, 3.9, 4.6, 5.5, 6.2, and 7.0 GPa. The volume-pressure data are used to calculate equation of state parameters K T0 = 50.4(12) GPa and K′ = 1.9(4). At approximately 7.2 GPa, a first-order transformation to space group P3¯1c was observed. Cell dimensions of the high-pressure phase at 7.2 GPa are a = 5.258(6) Å, c = 5.64(1) Å. The high pressure structure was determined and refined to R(F) = 0.06 using 83 intensity data, of which 15 were unique. This high-pressure phase appears to be more compressible than the orthorhombic phase with an estimated initial bulk modulus (K 7.2GPa) of 10 GPa.

Notizen: Abstract The compressibilities of the three end-member feldspars have been determined between 1 bar and 50 kbar by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, using a Merrill-Bassett type diamond anvil cell with three crystals loaded simultaneously. Low albite (ordered aluminium-silicon distribution) and high sanidine (disordered Al-Si) show similar behaviour on compression, with bulk moduli (linear fit to volume-pressure data) of 0.70 and 0.67 Mbar respectively. The most compressible cell axis of all three feldspars studied is a, indicating that the major change in the feldspar framework with pressure is a shortening of the overall length of the “crankshaft chains” by reduction of T-O-T angles. Anorthite shows anomalous behaviour in that we have observed a previously unreported reversible phase transition at a pressure between 25.5 and 29.5 kbar. This transition is marked by large discontinuities in the unit cell angles and a small decrease of 0.2 percent in the cell volume with increasing pressure. The high-pressure phase is less compressible than the low-pressure phase, the bulk moduli being 0.94 and 1.06 Mbar respectively. There was no evidence of a monoclinic to triclinic inversion in sanidine that was expected to occur between 20 and 30 kbar on the basis of previous work on intermediate alkali feldspars.

Notizen: Abstract The oxygen isotope compositions of coesite, sanidine, kyanite, clinopyroxene and garnet were measured in an ultra-high pressure-temperature grospydite from the Roberts Victor kimberlite, South Africa. The δ18O values (per mil v. SMOW) of each phase and (1 σ) are as follows: coesite, 8.62 (0.31); sanidine, 8.31 (0.02); kyanite, 7.98 (0.08); pyroxene, 7.63 (0.11); garnet, 7.53 (0.03). In situ analyses of the coesite with the laser extraction system are δ18O=9.35 (0.08), n=4, demonstrating that the coesite is homogeneous. The coesite has partially inverted to polycrystalline quartz and the pyroxene is extensively altered during uplift. The larger scatter for the mineral separate coesite and pyroxene data may be due to partial reequilibration between the decompression-related breakdown products of these two phases. The anomalously high δ18O value of the grospydite (δ18Owholerock=7.7‰) is consistent with altered oceanic crust as a source rock. Temperature estimates from a linear regression of all the data to three different published calibrations correspond to an equilibrium temperature of 1310±80°C. The calculated isotopic pressure effect is to lower these estimates by about 40°C at 40 kb. The estimated temperature based on Al−Si disorder in sanidine is 1200±100°C and that from Fe−Mg exchange thermometry between garnet and clinopyroxene is 1100±50°C. Given the large errors associated with thermometry at such high temperatures, it is concluded that the xenolith equilibrated that 1200±100°C. Pressure estimates are 45±5 kb, based on dilution of the univariant equilibria albite = jadeite + coesite and 2 kyanite + 3 diopside = grossular + pyrope + 2coesite. Zoning in the outer 20 μm of the feldspar from Ab0.8 to Ab16 indicates rapid decompression to 25 kb or less. The isotopic temperature estimates are the highest ever obtained and combined with the high degree of Al−Si disorder in sanidine require rapid cooling from ultra-high temperatures. It is inferred that the xenolith was sampled at the time of equilibration, providing a point on the upper Cretaceous geotherm in the mantle below South Africa.

Notizen: Conclusion In summary, there are no existing clinopyroxene-liquid REE distribution data obtained under appropriate conditions to permit numerical modeling of trace elements to constitute a critical test of the pyroxene fractionation process. There are, however, numerous clinopyroxeneliquid partitioning data in the literature that give qualitatively similar patterns to those observed in grospydites. Further, the high pressure fractionation model accounts for the major-element and exsolution phenomena in a manner directly consistent with experimental petrologic studies, and can qualitatively account for the trace element and isotopic characteristics of the rocks in a manner consistent with the crystal chemistry of the phases. We therefore continue to prefer the high-pressure clinopyroxene fractionation model over a low-pressure plagioclase fractionation model for the origin of the grospydites.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, the energy criterion is extended to predict the relationship between the temperature of microcrack initiation (T MB) caused by thermal stressing in brittle materials and the grain size. The relation can be extrapolated to room temperature to provide an estimate of the critical grain size. When the relation was compared to literature data, it was found that: (1) the predicted inverse square root relation of T MB to grain size is satisfied; (2) the room temperature intercept on the grain-size axis agrees well with the measured critical grain sizes. Also presented is a graphical method, based on the proposed relation, by which an engineering estimate of the critical grain size may be made from a minimal set of data.
