Notizen: A qualitative analysis is developed for the displacement of an unstable foam in a porous structure. The effects of the magnitude of the London-van der Waals forces, of the surface tension, of the surface viscosities, of the quality (volume fraction of the gas), of the bubble size, and of the viscosity of the foaming agent solution are investigated. A number of qualitative conclusions are drawn regarding three aspects of mobility control: distribution of bypassed oil, speed of displacement, and displacement efficiency.Ideally, any change in formulation should increase both the speed of displacement and the displacement efficiency. This is possible only by decreasing the surface viscosities. With all of the other variables, whenever either the speed of displacement or the displacement efficiency is increased, the other is decreased. Whether both the speed of displacement and the displacement efficiency actually increase on reducing the surface viscosities depends on whether the effects of the surface viscosities are dominant.

Notizen: This quantitative analysis shows the relative effects of interfacial tension, interfacial viscosities, and wetting during displacement in a capillary whose radius is a sinusoidal function of axial position. The effect of the interfacial viscosities is to increase the resistance to displacement regardless of the wetting condition. The result are consistent with a previous qualitative analysis and with a previous quantitative analysis for displacement in capillaries whose radii are independent of axial position. In screening surfactant systems for potential use in tertiary oil recovery, it is recommended that the interfacial tension be minimized first, since it determines whether oil displacement will occur, and that the interfacial viscosities be minimized second, since they influence the rate of oil displacement.

Notizen: When a small drop or bubble is driven through a liquid phase to a fluid-fluid interface, a thin liquid film which forms between them drains, until an instability forms and coalescence occurs. Lin and Slattery (1982b) developed a hydrodynamic theory for the first portion of this coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film which occurs while it is sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces can be ignored. Here we extend their theory to include the effects of the London-van der Waals forces. To simplify the analysis, we follow the suggestion of Buevich and Lipkina (1975, 1978) in developing an expression for the rate of thinning at the rim or barrier ring of the draining film. A linear stability analysis permits us to determie the coalescence time or the elapsed time between the formation of a dimpled film and its rupture at the rim.For comparison, this same linear stability analysis is applied to the thinning equations developed by MacKay and Mason (1963) for the plane parallel disc model and by Hodgson and Woods (1969) for the cylindrical drop model. For all three models, our linear stability estimate for the coalescence time tc is in better agreement with the available experimental data than is the elapsed time t∞ between the formation of a dimpled film and its drainage to zero thickness at the rim in the absence of instabilities.

Notizen: When a small drop or bubble approaches a solid surface, a thin liquid film forms between them, drains, until an instability forms and coalescence occurs. Lin and Slattery (1982a) developed a hydrodynamic theory for the first portion of this coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film while it is sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces can be ignored. Here the effects of the London-van der Waals forces are included. The resulting theory describes the evolution of the film profile, given only the bubble radius and the required physical properties. The inclusion of a positive disjoining pressure results in better descriptions of the film profiles measured by Platikanov (1964) for air bubbles pressed against glass plates. When the disjoining pressure is negative, an unstable draining film evolves and finally ruptures. Unfortunately, there are no experimental data with which to compare our predicted coalescence times.

Notizen: Washburn's equation has been generalized to explain the relative effects of the interfacial viscosities, interfacial tension, and wetting during displacement in a single, cylindrical capillary. The effect of the interfacial viscosities is to increase the resistance to displacement regardless of the wetting condition. The predictions of a prior qualitative theory for the relative effects of the interfacial viscosities and of interfacial tension during tertiary oil recovery are fully supported by this analysis. This discussion further indicates that the interfacial dilatational viscosity may be relatively more important than the interfacial shear viscosity.

Notizen: An analysis of a batch, dispersed-emulsion (liquid membrane), separation system results in simple models that describe the concentrations and masses of each phase as functions of time. Comparisons with a limited set of experimental data are offered. One of these models allows a set of pilot studies to be extended to performance predictions and comparative studies of different feed-membrane-solvent combinations, which could lead to an optimally designed separation process.
