Notes: Summary The incidence of diabetes among people aged 18–50 years has been studied prospectively in nine towns, chosen to encompass the range of socioeconomic conditions and spread of latitude in England and Wales. The incidence of Type 1 (insulindependent) diabetes in this age group varied little between the towns. However, the incidence of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes was markedly higher in the towns with ‘worse’ socio-economic conditions. The mean incidences were 23 per 100000 for the three ‘worse’ towns and 10 per 100000 for the three ‘better’ towns. This was not explicable by an association between the disease and social class. This finding has to be reconciled with known and hypothesised influences in the aetiology of Type 2 diabetes.

Notes: Twenty-three cases of glomus tumours seen at the Dermatology out-patients of two hospitals are reported. Their principal clinical and histopathological features are recorded and the recent literature reviewed. The findings are compared with previously published accounts.

Notes: A laboratory experiment was carried out to quantify and compare the physical damage (measured as scale loss), recovery and survival of two size categories [small: 48–85 mm total length (TL); large: 78–148 mm TL] of 0-group mulloway, Argyrosomus japonicus, after simulated escape through square-shaped mesh (bar length of 21.5 mm). Regardless of their size, fish that were fatigued to exhaustion and forced through square meshes sustained significantly more (i.e. 〉1.8 times) scale loss than did control fish that were only fatigued. However, the total scale loss incurred was 〈5% and significantly improved 7 days after treatment. Survival rates over a 2-week observation period were 100 and 〉97% for treatment and control fish, respectively. The results support the utility of square mesh for reducing the prawn-trawl fishing mortality of unwanted bycatch.

Notes: Abstract The newly derived dynamic-crack-branching criterion with its modifications is verified by the dynamicphotoelastic results of dynamic crack branchings in thinpolycarbonate, single-edged crack-tension specimens. Successful crack branching was observed in four specimens and unsuccessful branching in another. Crack branching consistently occurred when the necessary conditions ofK I =K I b =3.3 MPa $$\sqrt m$$ and the sufficiency condition ofr o =r c =0.75 mm were satisfied simultaneously. In the unsuccessful branching test, the necessary condition was not satisfied sinceK I was always less thanK I b .
