    Notizen: Abstract The stimuli controlling the rate at which people smoke cigarettes have not been clearly defined. On the hypothesis that smoking is basically nicotine-seeking behavior. nicotine available to the subject was experimentally manipulated through controlling cigarette size and nicotine content. In Experiment I, subjects given their own cigarettes in whole, half, quarter, and eighth lengths, increased the number of cigarettes smoked and number of puffs to compensate for reductions in size. Satisfaction was directly related to cigarette length. In Experiment II, subjects given special cigarettes delivering 0.2 or 2.0 mg nicotine/cigarette smoked significantly more of the low than of the high nicotine cigarettes and took significantly more puffs. As in Experiment I, significantly more quarter length than full length cigarettes were smoked, but total number of puffs did not differe. These results support the hypothesis that nicotine controls smoking behavior.

    Notizen: Abstract In order to study trends in smoking withdrawal symptoms, 35 participants in a smoking cessation clinic completed four questionnaires daily for 2 weeks. The questionnaire dealt with a variety of symptoms which a factor analysis showed could be grouped into four factors: stimulation, desire to smoke, and physical and psychological symptoms. Changes were observed in reports of symptoms over days. Trend analyses found that each symptom group except stimulation showed significant patterns or changes as a function of days in abstinence. These symptom clusters were all found to have U-shaped functions. In addition, desire to smoke and psychological symptoms showed linear decreases as abstinence proceeded. Light and heavy smokers were found to differ in the pattern of reported stimulation.Ss who were totally abstinent reported less severe craving overall for cigarettes than those who only reduced their cigarette consumption by an average of 60%. Also, the craving of totally abstinentSs dropped off more sharply as abstinence proceeded. The import of these patterns and trends in withdrawal symptoms as a function of time is discussed.

    Notizen: Summary Etiolated 6-day old wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. ‘Chris’) seedlings were subjected to osmotic stress by the application of polyethylene glycol 12 hours prior to exposure to continuous illumination for a 48 hours period. Stress impaired seedling growth and altered plastid development. The number of grana per plastid and the number of thylakoids per grana were significantly different in plastids from stressed and non-stressed leaves after 48 hours of development in the light. Chlorophyll production was similarly decreased in stressed leaves. After 12 hours of greening a swelling or dilation of thylakoid membranes became common. The dilation continued during the remainder of the experimental period and frequently reduced the grana and stroma thylakoid systems to a series of vesicles. There was no significant increase in the number and size of plastoglobuli as a result of the thylakoid dilation. Extensions containing crystalline-like bodies commonly developed from stressed plastids after 24 hours of greening. A reduction in both chloroplast and cytoplasmic ribosomes was noted in stressed leaves.
