Notizen: Abstract The D'Entrecasteaux Islands of eastern Papua New Guinea consist of a number of active metamorphic core complexes formed under an extensional tectonic setting related to sea-floor spreading in the west Woodlark Basin. The complexes are defined by mountainous domes (〉2500 m high) of fault-bounded, high-grade metamorphic rocks (including eclogite facies) intruded by 2–4-Ma granodiorite plutons. Garnet–clinopyroxene exchange thermometers indicate that the temperature of equilibration of the eclogites was 730–900° C. The jadeite component of omphacite indicates minimum pressure of 21 kbar, suggesting depths of 〉70 km.The metamorphic rocks have undergone widespread retrogression to amphibolite facies. Retrogression of the metamorphic basement is associated with shearing and formation of the metamorphic core complexes. P–T conditions in the early stages of shear zone activity, determined using the garnet–biotite exchange thermometer and the GASP and GRIPS barometers, were 570–730° C and 7–11 kbar. A second phase of re-equilibration at much lower pressures appears to be related to the widespread intrusion of granodiorite plutons. One re-equilibrated gneiss indicated maximum temperature of 730° C at estimated pressures of approximately 4 kbar. This late, high-temperature metamorphism is also indicated by reactions involving the production of hercynite and corundum in aluminous gneisses and formation of sillimanite at the expense of kyanite. Two major episodes of granodiorite intrusion occurred during uplift and exhumation of the core complexes. Both closely coincide spatially with high-temperature metamorphic rocks, the onset of deformation in extensional shear zones and subsequent uplift of the metamorphic basement. These observations indicate a fundamental link between uplift and granodiorite intrusion during continental extension and the formation of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands metamorphic core complexes.

Notizen: Abstract: The technique of photoaffinity labelling with [4-3H]cytochalasin B was applied to osmotically lysed cerebral microvessels isolated from sheep brain. Cytochalasin B was photo-incorporated into a membrane protein of average apparent Mr 53,000. Incorporation of cytochalasin B was inhibited by D-glucose, but not by L-glucose, which strongly suggests that the labelled protein is, or is a component of, the glucose transporter of the blood–brain barrier. Investigation of noncovalent [4-3H]cytochalasin B binding to cerebral microvessels by equilibrium dialysis indicated the presence of a single set of high-affinity binding sites with an association constant of 9.8 ± 1.7 (SE) μM−1. This noncovalent binding was inhibited by D-glucose, with a Ki of 23 mM. These results provide preliminary identification of the glucose transporter of the ovine blood–brain barrier, and reveal both structural and functional similarities to the glucose transport protein of the human erythrocyte.

Notizen: Diaper dermatitis is a common childhood affliction. Aiming to help reduce the prevalence of this problem, we have advanced in our development of a novel diaper that delivers dermatological formulations to help protect the skin from over-hydration and irritation.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveTo determine the clinical benefits of a novel disposable diaper designed to deliver a zinc oxide and petrolatum-based formulation continuously to the skin during use.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsAll studies were independent, blinded, randomized clinical trials. Study A was conducted to confirm transfer of the zinc oxide/petrolatum (ZnO/Pet) formulation from the diaper to the child’s skin during use. Children wore a single diaper for 3 h or multiple diapers for 24 h. After the use period, stratum corneum samples were taken from each child and analysed for ZnO/Pet. Study B evaluated the prevention of skin irritation and barrier damage from a standard skin irritant (SLS) in an adult arm model. Study C evaluated skin erythema and diaper rash in 268 infants over a 4-week usage period. One half of the infants used the ZnO/Pet diaper, while the other half used a control diaper that was identical except for the absence of the ZnO/Pet formulation.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsThe ointment formulation and ZnO transferred effectively from the diaper to the child’s skin during product use. Transfer of ZnO increased from 4.2 µg/cm2 at 3 h to 〉 8 µg/cm2 at 24 h. Exposure to the formulations directly on adult skin prior to an irritant challenge was associated with up to a 3.5 reduction in skin barrier damage and skin erythema. Greatest reductions were seen for the ZnO containing formulations. Wearing of the formulation treated diaper was also associated with a significant reduction in skin erythema and diaper rash compared to the control product.〈section xml:id="abs1-6"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThe results demonstrated the clinical benefits associated with continuous topical administration of a zinc oxide/petrolatum-based formulation by this novel diaper.

Notizen: A secondary discharge was used to enhance chemical nonequilibrium in the boundary layer of a stagnation point flow reactor during the atmospheric pressure deposition of chemically vapor deposited (CVD) diamond with a direct-current (dc) arcjet. The secondary discharge was induced by means of a positive potential on the deposition surface to drive a current through the boundary layer and produce energetic electrons. These electrons can promote superequilibrium concentrations of radicals at the growth surface. It was found that with 3.5 A/cm2 at 115 V in the secondary discharge, the growth rate of diamond in this reactor increased by a factor of 6 as compared with the floating or grounded substrate case. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
