Notes: High-power millimeter wave generators can induce electron cyclotron waves in a plasma which can fulfill many functions (plasma breakdown, heating, current drive) in fusion plasma reactors including both tokamak and stellarator concepts. All these applications require tens of megawatts of power in the frequency range 100–300 GHz and power 0.5–1.5 MW per unit. Among various microwave sources gyrotrons are the most developed source. Because of the heat losses in resonator walls at such high frequencies and powers oversized cavities must be used. In such cavities the mode competition becomes a severe problem. The most advanced theory of mode competition in gyrotrons is the nonstationary nonlinear theory. In the present article we extend this theory by allowing for inhomogeneity of the guiding magnetic field. The importance of this generalized theory is illustrated in the case of a 3 MW 140 GHz gyrotron with a coaxial cavity working in the TE21,13 mode.

Notes: The theory describing the effect of fluctuations in technical parameters (voltages, beam current, external magnetic fields) on the linewidth of gyrotron radiation is presented. Results of the analysis of free-running gyrotron oscillators are given. The effect of technical fluctuations on the spectrum density of the frequency noise is considered and some estimates are compared with available experimental data. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: From the general three-wave coupling formalism in magnetized nonrelativistic Vlasov plasma, an expression is derived that gives the differential cross section for the scattering of incident radiation off of thermal fluctuations induced by ions in a hot magnetized plasma. The model is valid to any order in thermal parameters, and can thus generalize the previous theory models to regimes where either the electron Larmor radius or the electron cyclotron resonance are significant for the scattered wave. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The influence of the electron velocity and energy spreads on gyrotron operation is studied by generalizing the well-known η⊥(μ,F) plots by means of the Monte Carlo techniques. Such contour plots may be useful for a quick quantitative estimation of the detrimental effect of the spreads on the efficiency of a gyrotron. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In low voltage gyrodevices operating at high cyclotron harmonics the electrons are weakly coupled to the synchronous harmonic of an electromagnetic field. To realize efficient operation of a device it is necessary to compensate for this weak coupling by increasing the resonator Q-factor. When the required Q-factor is on the order of the Ohmic Q-factor, the optimization of gyrotron parameters should be modified by taking into account Ohmic losses of the microwave power. In the present paper this modification has been done and the optimization of two- and three-cavity gyrodevices operating at cyclotron harmonics has been considered. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of displacement of an annular electron beam with respect to the resonator axis on gyrotron operation is studied. The coupling between co- and counter-rotating TEm,p waves caused by eccentricity is analyzed both in the linear and nonlinear regimes. Nonlinear regimes are studied first in the quasilinear approximation, when the dependence of the electron gain functions on the field amplitude is described by a polynomial approximation. This makes it possible to study analytically some nonlinear effects caused by eccentricity. Then a self-consistent set of equations is studied numerically in the case of the MIT gyrotron [Blank et al., IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. PS-22, 883 (1994)] operating in the TE16,2 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic, where such effects have been studied experimentally, and of a gyrotron operating in the TE1,2 mode at the second harmonic. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of electrostatic adiabatic electron trapping in the presence of a depressed collector has been included in gyrotron efficiency computations. The results are presented as general contour plots in the control parameter plane. A condition for trapping is derived in terms of the retarding voltage. The overall electron efficiency as a function of the retarding voltage has been calculated for a representative set of control parameters including the effect of electron velocity spread. It is found that the onset of trapping seriously decreases the efficiency. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The onset of stochastic oscillations in gyrotrons is studied by means of the self-consistent theory describing nonstationary processes. Complicated alternating sequences of regions of stationary, automodulation, and chaotic oscillations are found in the plane of the generalized gyrotron variables: cyclotron resonance mismatch and dimensionless current. The results of the investigations are important in connection with attempts to increase the output power of gyrotrons by raising the current. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The theory of multicavity gyrodevices has been developed for the case when two prebunching cavities may operate at different harmonics of cyclotron frequency. It is shown that when the first cavity operates at the fundamental and the second cavity at the second harmonic, the harmonic content in an electron beam current and the efficiency of operation in the third, output cavity are higher than these when two first cavities operate at the fundamental. The efficiency of operation of the output cavity at the first four cyclotron harmonics was studied with the account for electron velocity spread for both, single- and two-harmonic prebunching cases. The results obtained permit one to estimate the efficiency of operation of multicavity gyrodevices at cyclotron harmonics and its sensitivity to electron velocity spread. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
