Notes: A method is described for transferring deposited diamond films to a second substrate, thereby providing access to the diamond film back surface and also allowing post-deposition contact formation to both surfaces of the film. The availability of both sides of the diamond film allows increased experimental control and flexibility for investigation of electrical properties and contact phenomena. The films are deposited in a microwave plasma disk reactor onto silicon substrates and transferred to epoxy substrates. Also presented is a comparison of the roughness of the top and bottom film surfaces, a Raman spectrum of the transferred film, and current-voltage characteristics of samples with dual-side contacts.

Notes: Polycrystalline diamond films were deposited on (100) oriented silicon substrates using a microwave plasma disk reactor. Circular delaminations between the diamond thin film and the silicon substrate were produced by Vickers microindentation. While an overall relationship between mean delamination diameter and film thickness was not observed, an unexpectedly strong correlation was observed between delamination diameter and the square root of the coating grain size. A disadvantage of the Vickers microindentation technique is the damage sustained by the Vickers indenter tip after repeated loadings.

Notes: The aluminium tolerance of 31 varieties within 11 species in six genera of the Cruciferae was determined by measuring root length under aluminium stress. Variance analysis indicated highly significant differences of aluminium tolerance among the species compared. Raphanus sativus (2n= 18, RR) had the highest aluminium tolerance, followed by Brassica carinata (2n= 34, BBCC), Brassica oleracea (2n= 18°C) and Brassica napus (2n= 38, AACC), which had the C genome. There might be more than one gene for aluminium tolerance in the R and C genomes. Those species such as Brassica campestris (2n= 20, AA), Brassica nigra (2n= 16, BB), Brassica juncea (2n= 36, AABB), Arabidopsis thaliana (2n= 10, arar), Sinapis alba (2n= 24, alal), Cheiranthus cheiri (2n= 12, chch) and Orychophragmus violaceus (2n= 24, OO) that did not include the R or C genome had lower aluminium tolerances. Transfer of aluminium tolerance from R. sativus into the cultivated brassicas seems possible by intergeneric hybridization and the production of addition, substitution or translocation lines.

Notes: We have examined the effects of ingestion of chemically denatured ovalbumin (OVA) in mice. Both 8 M urea-denatured OVA (UD-OVA) and carboxymethylated UD-OVA (CM-OVA) were purified by gel filtration. Specific IgG antibody and systemic delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses to OVA were not suppressed by CM-OVA fed prior to or after immunization with OVA in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). When CM-OVA was used instead of OVA for immunization, serum IgG and DTH responses to CM-OVA were orally tolerized by OVA, but not by UD-OVA or CM-OVA. Studies of antigen uptake in mice using sandwich ELISA tests showed that OVA, but not CM-OVA, was absorbed after antigen ingestion. In vitro studies further demonstrated that CM-OVA was digested much more rapidly than OVA. Moreover, studies using bovine serum albumin (BSA) demonstrated that both IgG and DTH responses to BSA were orally tolerant to BSA, but not to denatured BSA. Finally, studies using human gamma-globulin (HGG), a well-known tolerogen, also found that the IgG antibody response to HGG was not orally tolerized by denatured HGG. These results suggest that complete denaturation of globular proteins may affect their processing and absorption in the gut and thus abrogates oral tolerance induction.

Notes: Experiments were conducted to identify the roles of the individual sense organs in the feeding behaviour of Chinese perch Siniperca chuatsi by determining the consumption of natural food after selective removal or blocking of eyes, lateral lines and olfactory organs, and also by observing the behavioural response to visual, mechanical and chemical stimulation by artificial prey. Chinese perch were able to feed properly on live prey fish when either eyes or lateral lines were intact or functional, but could scarcely feed without these two senses. Chinese perch recognized its prey by vision through the perception of motion and shape, and showed a greater dependence on vision in predation when both visual and mechanical cues were available. Chemical stimulation by natural food could not elicit any feeding response in Chinese perch, and gustation was only important to the fish for the last stage of food discrimination in the oropharyngeal cavity. The sensory basis of Chinese perch in feeding is well adapted to its nocturnal stalking hunting strategy, and also explains its peculiar food habit of accepting live prey fish only and refusing dead prey fish or artificial diets.

Notes: Previous studies have indicated that the selection of condylar referencing points can significantly influence condylar point trajectories, and the use of radiographically determined condylar points is essential for accurate representation of condylar movement. The aim of this investigation was to determine the accuracy with which the three-dimensional locations of condylar points could be determined in the coordinate system of the JAWS3D tracking device when an ipsilateral fiducial marker is used. A perspex mandible containing condylar radiographic markers was constructed. A JAWS3D target frame and a fiducial marker, supporting radiographic markers, were secured to the perspex mandible. The image data from computer tomography scans of the condyles and fiducial marker, together with photographs of the fiducial marker and the JAWS3D target frame were used to calculate condylar point coordinates in the JAWS3D coordinate system. These data were then compared with the data obtained by direct measurement of the condylar radiographic markers in the JAWS3D coordinates. The results suggest that a unilateral fiducial marker is sufficient to allow the registration of ipsilateral condylar point coordinates to an accuracy of ∼1.0 mm.

Notes: : This randomized, double-blind, multicentre study compared lansoprazole with placebo for symptomatic relief of patients with non-erosive gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods: 214 patients with symptomatic, non-erosive GERD (moderate to severe daytime and/or night-time heartburn greater than half the days over the past 6 months and during the 7- to 10-day pre-treatment period) were randomized to either lansoprazole 15 mg or lansoprazole 30 mg, or placebo o.d. for 8 weeks.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results: Daily diary data indicated that on the first treatment day a statistically significantly smaller percentage of lansoprazole patients reported daytime and night-time heartburn and antacid usage, compared with placebo patients. Lansoprazole patients also reported statistically significant less severe daytime and night-time heartburn on the first treatment day. During 0–4, 4–8, and 0–8 weeks of therapy, a statistically significant smaller percentage of days and nights with heartburn, less severe daytime and night-time heartburn, and less antacid usage were observed in the lansoprazole group compared to the placebo group. The percentages of patients with adverse reactions were similar in the lansoprazole and placebo groups.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that lansoprazole is an appropriate therapy for patients with symptomatic non-erosive GERD.
