Description: Cultural heritage institutions are on the verge of making their artefacts available in digital form. During this transition they are faced with conceptual and technical challenges that have only little overlap with their traditional domains but provide them with a lot of opportunities. We aim at empowering them to deal with some of these challenges by designing workflows attached to the data flow within a digital long-term preservation system. The preservation framework processes data by utilising micro-services. These are tailored to accommodate data transformations that can help institutions making their data available if they choose to participate in the interconnected digital world

Description: The city state of Berlin supports digitisation projects in its cultural heritage institutions and has established the Service Center for Digitisation (digiS) as a central supporting and coordinational unit. As a goal, a technical and organisational infrastructure for the projects as well as matters for the digital preservation of cultural heritage objects shall be provided. The article describes the support program, the range of tasks of digiS and the challenges that arise for cultural heritage institutions, if they want to open up and digitally preserve their objects for a long time.

Description: Accessing information packages with Islandora is straight forward, albeit not so much when they reside within a federated data management environment. In our case, dissemination information packages live in the Fedora object store for immediate access. The archival information packages are stored safely in a hierarchical storage infrastructure managed by iRODS and are only accessible for administrative and preservation action purposes. We present a data model that supports both use cases utilizing just a single Islandora instance. To integrate with iRODS, we developed an Islandora module to display and deliver data and metadata from the storage location. This solution also allows us to extend the system with further preservation workflow actions that will be required in the future.

Description: In this paper, we describe an OAIS aligned data model and architectural design that enables us to archive digital infor- mation with a single core preservation workflow. The data model allows for normalization of metadata from widely var- ied domains to ingest and manage the submitted information utilizing only one generalized toolchain and be able to create access platforms that are tailored to designated data con- sumer communities. The design of the preservation system is not dependent on its components to continue to exist over its lifetime, as we anticipate changes both of technology and environment. The initial implementation depends mainly on the open-source tools Archivematica, Fedora/Islandora, and iRODS.

Description: Digitale Langzeitarchivierung erfolgt auf Grundlage verbindlicher Regelungen zwischen Langzeitarchiv und Datengeber.

Description: Today, the Portable Document Format (PDF) is the prevalent le format for the exchange of xed content electronic documents for publication, research, and dissemination work in the academic and cultural heritage domains. erefore it is not surprising that PDF/A is perceived to be an archival format suitable for digital archiving work ows. is paper gives a rather short overview about the history and technical complexity of the format, its bene ts, shortcomings and potential pitfalls in the area of digital preservation with respect to aspects of accessibility and reusability of the information content of PDF/A. Several potential problems within the creation, preservation, and dissemination contexts are identi ed that may create problems for present and future content users. It also discusses some of the risks inherent to PDF/A for parts of the preservation community and suggests possible strategies to mitigate problems that might prevent future human or machine-based usability of the data and information stored within digital archives.

Description: This paper describes and explores the concept of perceived preservation levels and their implications. Perceived preservation levels are a way to communicate preservation policies, options and actions to the various stakeholders in digital preservation a digital preservation system is capable and able of. While explicitly assigned or stated preservation levels are promises to adhere to a certain set of policies and decisions, it may be hard to impossible for a best effort preservation service to fulfill these expectations. Perceived preservation levels combine different outcomes from preservation actions with preservation options and available resources to convey a holistic view of the archive’s worflow and decision states. A preservation system providing information about current states of digital objects puts the data producers in a position to reassure themselves of the trustworthiness of the archive without the need of formal certification. This openness has implications not only for the trust relationship between producer and archive but provides the opportunity to constantly reassess the archive’s decisions and priorities from the outside.

Description: We present iCon.text, a kiosk platform for the iPad centered around artefacts, whose content and layout can be tailored without programming skills for specific museum exhibitions. The central metaphor to access information is a virtual postcard with one front and a customizable number of back sides that provide details about exhibits to museum visitors in textual and image form. Back sides can link to others cards. Access to these postcards is possible through one or more navigation views that can be navigated to from a navigation bar. The entry point to the application is designed as a multitouch interactive pile of cards in a playful manner that allows visitors of any age an easy approach to the presentation and interaction metaphor. To directly access a certain postcard, a mosaic view can be uitilized to provide an overview about all available exhibits. A category view groups postcards into themes. Locating artefacts on a zoomable map or exhibition floor plan allows for conveying information about spatial contexts between different objects and their location. Furthermore, contexts can be illustrated with a two stage view comprising an overview and corresponding detail views to provide further insights into the spatial, temporal, and thematic contexts of artefacts. The application scaffolding allows the design of bilingual presentations to support exhibitions with an international audience. The logo of the presenting institution or exhibition can be incorporated to display the the kiosk's corporate design branding and to access an imprint or further informations. Usage is logged into files to provide a basis for extracting statistical information about the usage. The details about the exhibits are presented as images and as such impose no limit to the design choices made by the content provider or exhibition designer. The application (enhanced with a panoramic view) has been integrated successfully into a large special exhibition about the ancient city of Pergamon 2011/2012 at the Pergamon Museum Berlin within the interdisciplinary project "Berlin Sculpture Network".
