Notes: A technique for characterization of intermodulation performance of unpatterned high TC superconducting (HTS) films, based on the application of the resonator with a single coupling probe is proposed. It allows us to sufficiently increase the sensitivity in comparison with the conventional method based on the resonator with two coupling probes. The measurements of the power at mixed frequency as a function of input power are performed for epitaxial HTS films of various surface resistance and thickness. From the experimental data an intermodulation coefficient α is determined, which provides the film intermodulation properties independently on the measuring system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A sensitive imaging system for weak x-ray flux registration in a 1–25 keV band is presented. The system is based on a visible light intensifier and it is successfully used for x-ray spectroscopy of plasma sources. Performance of the system is described.

Notes: Abstract In the Type I receptive fields (RFs) changes of the luminance leads to a shift of the curve relating the response and the stimulus area along the abscissa, in the Type II RFs the maximum of a response does not shift with changes of the luminance (Types I and II on classification by Glezer et al., 1971, 1972). The transient responses were observed in the Type I RFs and sustained responses in the Type II RFs. In the Type I RFs variation of the stimulus area and intensity brings about the change in the temporal and spatial frequency characteristics. This is produced by functional reorganization of the RF. In the Type II RFs there is no functional reorganization. The data obtained indicate that the Type I RFs are non-linear. By contrast, the Type II RFs are linear systems. The analysis of the model has shown that the distinctions in the dynamic characteristics of the responses of RFs belonging to different types is mainly due to different time constants for excitation and inhibition as well as inhibition coefficients. Distinctions in the mode of dependence of the RF response on stimulus parameters have been found to result from different relationship between delay time and stimulus parameters as well as different forms of the spatial weighting functions. It is shown that the Type I RFs transmit higher frequency components of the image spectrum, i.e. they emphasise the temporal and spatial contrasts. The Type II RFs transmit low frequency components of the spectrum including information about the intensity of an input stimulus.

Notes: Abstract The surface relief of SiO2 films and the influence of these films on the in-diffusion of atomic hydrogen in a semiconductor in the course of hydrogenation were investigated by atomic-force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The mesostructures appearing as a corrugation on the semiconductor surface are shown to be formed during the deposition of the SiO2 film. This fact causes an increase in the amount of hydrogen penetrating into a semiconductor in the course of hydrogenation. The deposition of the dielectric film on the n-GaAs surface results in its reconstruction consisting in forming a quasi-periodic relief. The treatment of the n-GaAs surface covered with the SiO2 protective film in atomic hydrogen modifies the surface relief of the epitaxial layer.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the partial inclusion of electron correlation effects has been considered in the framework of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method. The calculation of the electronic structure of the [Ti2O9]12− cluster is performed. The results obtained demonstrate that, in some cases, a major part of static correlation effects can be taken into account in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. The influence of these effects on the local characteristics of crystals is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract A technique for measuring the intermodulation signal arising in a nonlinear high-temperature superconductor film is suggested. Using a one-port resonator, the technique significantly increases sensitivity of the measuring system as compared to that of a two-port-resonator design. Specifically, it lowers the minimum measurable power at a given magnetic field strength on the film surface. Measurements of the intermodulation signal power as a function of the input power for YBaCuO films differing in surface resistance and thickness are reported. Based on the measured data, the intermodulation characteristic magnetic field is computed. The quantity characterizes nonlinear film properties of the regardless of the measuring system employed.

Notes: Abstract Calculations of the potential energy surfaces of X-OH 2 + cations (X = C, O) by the restricted and unrestricted Hartree-Fock methods (RHF, UHF) taking into account the correlation energy (MP-2) and by the CASSCF method are presented. All cations are found to be rather stable against X-O bond rupture and intermolecular rearrangement. The reaction of electron capture by these cations is studied.
