    Notes: Summary The permeability of glucose-containing poly-(vinylpyrrolidone) films to oxygen was studied. It was found that the permeability initially decreases with increasing glucose content reaching its minimum at about 16 wt.% of glucose, and then increases with further increase in glucose content. The amount of water in the films was also measured and the effect of glucose on oxygen permeation was related to the effect of water sorption on the same property.

    Notes: A novel method for the measurement of oxygen permeability through polymer membranes is described. It is based on monitoring the sensitized photo-oxygenation of a singlet oxygen acceptor in a detector layer sandwiched between a support and the polymer layer under test. The detector layer contains a sensitizer which on irradiation produces singlet excited oxygen from the ground-state oxygen available. The singlet oxygen reacts with an oxygen acceptor, the disappearance of which can be followed by spectrophotometry. In the photostationary state, changes in the acceptor absorbance are directly related to the overall flux of oxygen through the polymer membrane. It can be shown that the permeation coefficient P of oxygen is proportional to the rate of change in acceptor absorbance and to the inverse of the oxygen concentration in the surrounding atmosphere. The method is comparatively simple and rapid and provides data for polymers that are difficult to study by more conventional methods. Oxygen permeabilities were measured for a group of water-soluble polymers.

    Notes: Adsorption of Acid Yellow 38 to, and its light-induced desorption from, various coated polymer layers in water have been studied. Diffusion studies were used to determine the degree of competitive binding between the dye and polymers. It was found that the extent of both adsorption and desorption were different for polymer mixtures as compared to single polymer films. The presence of gelatin crosslinked within the polymer layer increased the amount of dye desorbed upon irradiation.

    Notes: This work describes the formation of discrete micelles (⋍ 0.1 μm) from ABA poly(oxyethylene-b-isoprene-b-oxyethylene) block copolymers in water. An efficient labeling of the micelles by polymerization of [14C]-styrene within the hydrophobic core is also described. These micellar nanoparticles are being considered as promising materials for controlled release and/or site-specific drug delivery systems. In experimental animals the micelles remained in circulation with a half-life in excess of 50 h. Our results demonstrate the advantages of using block copolymers for the preparation of “perfect” biocompatible surfaces such as are required for well-tolerated, long-circulating particulate drug carriers.

    Notes: The values of the permeability coefficient P (cm2/sec) and the diffusion coefficient D (cm2/sec), of oxygen in some water-soluble polymers at various values of relative humidity were determined. The amount of oxygen initially present in the polymer membranes was calculated. The effect of sample preparation and the film thickness on the transport parameters was investigated. The results confirm the possible effect of thickness on the rate of transport of oxygen in water-soluble polymers.

    Notes: The effect of polymer-polymer phase separation on the transport properties of gelatin-dextran films has been studied. In the gelatin-dextran-water system, the phase separation and gel formation do not occur due to the presence of a nonsolvent, but depend entirely on the temperature and the total polymer concentration. It has been found that the permeability of polymer blend films to aqueous solutes can be varied not only by changing the volume ratio of the phases, but also by varying the size of the individual domains of the two phases in the films. Under the conditions of restricted demixing (e.g., after gel formation), the course of the phase separation process can be changed by varying the length of time allowed for unrestricted separation. The two most important parameters affecting the result are the total polymer concentration in the casting solution, and the temperature regime. An exponential dependence of the permeation coefficient on the volume fraction of the solvent in the film is shown.

    Notes: The effect of polymers [gelatin, dextran, poly(vinyl alcohol), polyvinylimidazoles] on the photochemical and thermal isomerization of the water-soluble bisazo dye, Acid Yellow 38, has been studied. The absorption spectrum curve of the cis AY38 isomer was obtained using the method of Fischer. We have shown that the rate of thermal cis-trans isomerization of AY38 is first order and independent of pH from 6 to 9. An activation energy of 84 ± 4 kJ mol-1 has been calculated for this process. The effect of added polymers on the rate of this conversion is relatively small. The quantum yields for the trans-cis and cis-trans conversions have been estimated to be 0.15 ± 0.01 and 0.34 ± 0.03, respectively, for irradiation at 380 nm. Only polyvinylimidazoles were found to influence the behavior of the dye to any degree. For quaternized polyvinylimidazole the polymer/dye ratio determined solution turbidity, wavelength of maximum absorption, molar absorptivity, and the degree of conversion at photoequilibrium. The effect of polymer was interpreted in terms of increased dye/dye interactions due to high local concentration of the dye bound to polymer. The charge neutralization and crosslinking by the dye due to ionic interactions are seen to be the cause of polymer/dye complex precipitation. Precipitation occurs over a narrow [polymer]/[dye] ratio range.
